I'm mentally picturing 1000s of gum-chewing Metafiltarians slouching in, hand in pockets, eyeing the thread up and down with practised disdain.

"God, it's SHIT in here. Oh, I'll have that... and that..."

Aren't YSI links limited to just 25 downloads? Tsk.

Does anyone have the techy-bod knowledge on how to set up a torrent? That way the Mefites and the Ilxors can play together!

Simon (flameproof) (Flameproof), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

Here's a link to the first 86 (panoptician's list on 11/1):

http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=14S3Q4ORA51QY32REH829B7HGC

It's rather large (277mb). Wish I knew how to set up a torrent.

mja, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't it would be preferable if it were the whole list (as opposed to the first 86) if you want to set up a torrent?

Stan Meissner, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Stan: Nope. What you do (and what I would do if I hadn't already used up most of today's free time on this already) is:

1: Create a big folder for the files
2: Create subfolders for each of the 142 seven-inches
3: Drop the existing files in the right folders, with a consistent naming scheme
4: Create a .torrent of all that (possibly using TorrentZip: http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk/mameftpgroup/index.php?full#tzip )
5: Hand out the torrent so that everyone can start downloading (and encourage those who have most of the files in the torrent already to put them in the right places so the torrent gets seeded much faster)
6: When new files are added, update the .torrent file and publish it - it'll only download the new stuff

This is very similar to how the PleasureDome MAME ROMs torrent works:

Yoz, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah...but doesn't that change the hash of the .torrent file - thus making it a completely different torrent with the same (misleading name)? I was just thinking that if you fill it in with 142 folders, only 86 of which are actual files, it's going to get real annoying real quick with different versions of the same torrent, etc.

Although, by your MAME example, it appears that they keep version tracking numbers. Which is different, no?

Meh...but whadda I know.

BTW, mja's YSI is maxed out...:(

Stan Meissner, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Dinosaur Jr?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Stan: Yes, the hash will change, and it'll be a different torrent file each time. So you have to keep an eye on this thread (or wherever the torrent is being posted) and grab the latest torrent, then point it at where your existing download tree is, and it'll only download the new stuff on top of your existing files.

Yoz, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Gaaah - It was Pavement's "Demolition Plot J-7", not Dinosaur Jr. No idea what happened there, but the zip is misnamed. Sorry about that.

Yoz, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

The White Stripes - Merry Christmas EP (2 tracks)

Why not simply do a torrent of the first 86, and when more are collected, do a seperate torrent? If no one gets around to it before tonight, I'll set it up when I get home in about 6 hours.

mja, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I would do it, but the YSIs have expired...

Stan Meissner, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

A load more, and that's it from me for the day:

Ray Martin - Blue Tango
Bobby Lee Trammell - If You Ever Get It Once

Dang! Start new thread! Post no link on this one! Delete this message! Man the lifeboats!
i have the feeling we are running into trouble here. maybe a moderator should lock the thread?

BTW, mja's YSI is maxed out...:(
25 downloads have been reached, i suppose. and that's perfectly okay. all this torrent business talk makes me dizzy. the pandora is out of the box. how can we get it back inside? the small, comfy ilm box, i mean.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

still, thanks for all those fine tracks, yoz.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'd be happy to make a torrent. I just didn't get to the YSIs in time.

Stan Meissner, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I should have a higher quality copy of La Peste's Better Off Dead to upload in about six hours, unless someone beats me to it.

alex, I wouldn't worry about metafilter having found the link.

Is someone with all the files going to make a torrent?

-Calum

Calum Muir, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I've got this one :
The Wildbunch - Danger (ft Jack White)
It often exists under the name "Electric Six - Danger (High Voltage)". It's the same thing.

http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0OYL4K3JEG37W1FZ4P53XM5LZK

"Candy Cane Children" by the WS in the suprise package vol 2 is also in the "Merry Christmas EP"

Franswa, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

From the last list of missing tracks:

G L Crockett - Look out Mabel
Charlie Feathers - Deep elm blues / Nobody's darling
Charlie Feathers - When you come around / Too much alike
Mickey Lee Lane - Tutti Frutti

http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1V23S1PTOA7B71V199CW4PKANP

Is anyone keeping a list of missing b-sides? I may have some, but I don't have time to check what has already been posted.

jorge, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I can post the missing B side list in a couple of hours.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

concerning the torrent or a big zip file, i could do it up till now i have all files. but i would like to give it first to people who have participated, i.e. uploaded something. the others would have to be fast to get it. i don't lik the idea that thousands of people download all tracks with one click.

Arse, let's do that again...

Eddie & Ernie - Time Waits For No One
http://s6.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2HK7SDCETETBU31WBBCCWNXBEK

Yoz, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man, I totally didn't catch that the Wildbunch was the same as the Electric 6 version. That's one of the few singles that I have (though it may still be at the office). And does anyone know if that version of Dead Leaves & Dirty Ground is different from the album? If not, I'll YSI that with a quickness...

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Alex, while I appreciate the sentiment in only letting those who've contributed download, it'd actually work much better if more people can download, since that's what makes BitTorrent effective. The more people you have torrenting, the faster and more reliably it all works.

Besides, I've been uploading these tracks to share with as many people as possible.

Yoz, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

I noticed no one's posted this yet. This is the pre-bass version, which is probably what's on the record Peel had.

White Stripes - Dead Leave & The Dirty Ground
http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=25EZ5ZQTESGI71BDMIOOWQZIEK

I've also been adding Track #s in iTunes to all that's come before, so when the time comes I'll have those all categorized if anyone would be interested in that.

flannelgraph, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

a better rip of the La Peste-Better Off Dead:
http://s41.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1NN5DBUZ19F3U34WZMEKB2SSRZ

thanks, alex, for getting that list done!

patita (patita), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

Thanks alex. Here's what I have from the missing sides list:

Charlie Feathers - Today and Tomorrow
Charlie Feathers - When You Decide
Sam & Dave - Soothe Me
Don Covay - Leave Him, pts.1 and 2
Ann Peebles - I've Been There Before
Mary Monday & The Bitches - Pop Gun

http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1V7O4O13SAMNJ3OI3AGVCX6FJU

Does anyone know what they'll do with the box? I can give it a nice home ;)

jorge, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Forgot one:

G.L. Crockett - It's a Man Down There

http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2Y8TNEF4GNIAR14PVGIXRV4V3E

And that's it for me.

jorge, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

I think I made a torrent of all the files so far, except the Beatles tracks. The torrent can be downloaded at

http://rapidshare.de/files/7073420/peel.zip.torrent.html

Hunter Wilson, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

This got left out of the last message, but the torrent is for a really big .zip file (400+MB). It is also the first torrent I've ever created, so I can only hope it works. If it doesn't work let me know and I will try again.

Hunter Wilson, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Did you make it with an encoder that allows trackerless torrents?

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

try http://www.blogtorrent.com/ ? I've never made one but that RapidShare one isn't happening right now.

torrent's not working, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

It's been a couple years since I read ILM, but let me just say, you guys are amazing.

William Workman (bkharmony), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Did you make it with an encoder that allows trackerless torrents?

Sorry, but I have no idea.

It seems to be working, it is seeding 3 people right now, although rather slowly. To download the torrent from rapidshare you have to click the "free" link at the bottom of the page, then click the link "peel.zip.torrent". Hopefully it will speed up as more people get parts of it.

Hunter Wilson, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Hugh, I've got a grab on that torrent right now. Hopefully, you can keep it going. I'll make sure to keep seeding it when I've got all of it. The more peers there are the faster it will go. Don't worry too much right now...seems to be working!

Incidentally, it's not necessary to make a torrent out of one big zip file...you can do whole directories too. Just FYI.

Stan Meissner, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Hugh...of course, I meant Hunter. :)

Stan Meissner, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)
