like, ok, but he doesn't use it to say anything interesting! his point is to the effect of "so i can't remember what i heard first, but i liked some of the early stuff and one thing from the later stuff"--and this is supposed to be a sendoff post for a band he actually likes!

does picking involve anything besides saying what the records are? my sense has been I don't want to participate unless I can really get involved & in deep, and I kinda can't, things are busy around here

It can be whatever you want it to be.
Some post their thoughts on albums, what they mean to them, try to introduce classics to newbies and obscure classics to diehards that kind of thing. Whatever you choose. The more others do in-depth discussion the more will join in. Plus you can join in whenever you like if you are busy, all albums can still be discussed further down the line if you have been busy or just have something to say.

discussion promotes other discussion sort of thing. so the more who joins the better. Its running quite well just now. Its also fun, if you enjoy good discussion then its for you.

yeah, I've been pretty into the listening club. I dig it. but unfortunately, I haven't had the time to listen to as many of the picks as I would have liked.

I agree with destroyer re Lee's Isis blurb.

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about. then, really? those are your "vivid" impressions? intense? interesting? then a tossed off line about broadrick that doesn't explain what he did w/the band or why it was good, then he's claiming that isis are one of the last bands where physical releases mattered? really? why?

Each sentence in Lee's little thing should have been the topic sentence for a paragraph. That would have been an interesting piece worth reading, and would have conveyed actual information to the reader. What we get, though, reads like he wrote it during a commercial break while watching TV.

I don't give a crap about Isis, and I didn't think that was one of Cosmo's better pieces, but I've found a bunch of good stuff through Invisible Oranges.

tonight: baroness & mastodon! haven't seen either one before. ready to rock.

Baroness are super fun live because they HAVE so much fun live. Just seems like dudes really really love being up there playing their asses off.

Just a word of warning: I love mastodon, and I've seen them do great shows before, but they seem to be phoning in this tour. They were really... off when I saw them.

I'm not really surprised, they've been touring non-stop since Crack the Skye came out.

i'm more psyched for baroness, but i imagine a good mastodon show would be awesome.

(also v. curious what kind/size crowd this show will draw in knoxville. one of the things with metal right now is it's sort of hard to know how big the local fanbase is, and who's in it.)

Baroness show at Bowery Ballroom in Manhat was super, super packed.

Baroness were great as usual. I got the feeling that Mastodon were sick of playing Crack the Skye in its entirety, but they felt obligated to because they paid for the backdrop video for the entire album. Okay, the second part of that sentence is my theory, but the first part was observation.

For those of you with a tolerance for Gothic Metal, I'm liking the new Lacrimas Profundere a lot more than I did anything else I've heard from them. Late Sentenced-ish, but not as poppy as HIM. Dark and elegant.

hey, you got me to download it (legally), and I hated their last album.

ok so mastodon ROCKED. it's true i think that the second half, after the crack the skye set, was louder and harder. and i'm sort of dubious of the whole "perform the album" approach in any setting. but it's not like crack the skye was bad, it was fun. and then things really took off. baroness was great, too. rambunctious but right on it. and seeing them live helped me focus on their rhytmic fluidity, they're less afraid of groove than a lot of modern metal bands. (a friend of mine thinks this has to do with atlanta, and i suspect he's right.) anyway, it struck me that both bands have great drummers, but in very different ways.

Are there any doom metal bands that use sitar? Want sitar metal.

I don't know about doom bands doing that - it wouldn't surprise me to hear sitar on an Om album; there are a couple of death metal bands using older traditional instruments, but usually as mood/texture enhancers, or in interludes rather than within the song. Melechesh and Nile. Also Karl S. from Nile's side project is sort of droney-ambient "middle eastern" style stuff, but it's not metal.

I think there's a sitar in "Funeral of Dreams" on the new Cathedral. And yes, definitely OM.

Nebula albums always had a track or 2 with sitar.

actually the shop was sold out of the howling wind cd (that and hooded menace/coffinworm came out 2 weeks after i placed a profoundlore order, but i got those 2 in Glasgow) so im going to order the howling wind in the next day or 2, i can afford 1 more cd for the next month after ordering the Goatsnake reissue vinyls. But thats me til july :(

I nearly bought the Mono 3xLP but it was £30 and I realised I could get 5 cds for that saving me a big Profoundlore order with risk of customs hitting me with vat.

Bong are big on the Sitar...actually I say Sitar, but is it really that or just some other Indian instrument? 'Cos the couple of times I've seen them it's not looked like what I think of as a Sitar, despite that being mentioned in reviews of the records.

There's some (what sounds like a Coral Electric) sitar on some Amorphis stuff... hafta do some listening to remember which...

man I'm listening to The Seven Fat Years Are Over by Blind to Faith and loving it. A lot. Pretty sure that was a homophobic slur in the second song but it's hard to really say 'cause the dude doesn't really enunciate so good. But this is some quality sludge I gotta say.

ok I take it back I found a lyric sheet, he's saying "begging" - the lyrics are kinda decent crust-core doom

I've seen at least a dozen reports, so I'm gonna say yeah. Sorry to hear it. I interviewed him once; like every member of Slipknot I've met (about half of 'em), he was a nice, soft-spoken Iowa farmboy.
