As Phil pointed out, it tends to be a hang-out for a vocal portion of the "tr00 metal" only/elitist crowd that do a lot more denouncing than they do championing.

i only have the vaguest idea of what "tr00 metal" even means -- gotta say, getting so far into indie for five years that you ignore most other music is nagl. but i'll catch up

i think cosmo is an awful writer who rarely has anything interesting to say, but that could just be me

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 03:10 (sixteen years ago)

I don't find him "awful" by any means, but I don't like how he pads out so much of his writing with snarky commentary. Like I said, it seems like he spends more time talking about what he hates rather than what he loves, a trait which drives me crazy in any critic.

i dunno, like:

I discovered Isis’ discography – the prime years, anyway, 1998 to 2004 – nearly all at once. Thus, I forget which was my first Isis record. But I vividly remember my first impressions of each one. The Mosquito Control and The Red Sea EP’s blew me away with their intensity. Celestial, SGNL>05, Oceanic, the Oceanic remixes, and Panopticon were all “interesting”. They were all different, but a line clearly ran though them. The involvement of Justin Broadrick at times didn’t hurt. In this age of MP3’s, Isis may be one of the last bands whose physical releases were events.

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about. then, really? those are your "vivid" impressions? intense? interesting?

then a tossed off line about broadrick that doesn't explain what he did w/the band or why it was good, then he's claiming that isis are one of the last bands where physical releases mattered? really? why?

Anyone want to take a turn for a week curating Mordy's Metal Listening Club Volume #5: A Tribute To Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010) - Rainbow , Black Sabbath & DIO ? please post there and you can be pencilled in. If you just want to discuss the albums then you can join in to. all welcome even if you dont want to join in every week.

Would love to see skot and j0hn d,jeff t and adrien, chuck etc to pick a week. Seigbran is in! So please pop over.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about.

dude this is nitpicking & suggests a super-bad case of hater syndrome imo. note that I am not exactly anti-hater when it comes to keeping the poseurs out but you are sorta straining for the gnat here. framing when and how you first heard a band is a 100% decent way to start a piece - especially when he's pointing out that he came to the discography all at once, which is worth knowing about somebody's opinion: did you start with Altars of Madness, or Gateways, or, like this dude with Isis, did you probably grab a torrent of the whole catalog?

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

like, ok, but he doesn't use it to say anything interesting! his point is to the effect of "so i can't remember what i heard first, but i liked some of the early stuff and one thing from the later stuff"--and this is supposed to be a sendoff post for a band he actually likes!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

but yes i was nitpicking

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

Would love to see skot and j0hn d,jeff t and adrien, chuck etc to pick a week. Seigbran is in! So please pop over.

does picking involve anything besides saying what the records are? my sense has been I don't want to participate unless I can really get involved & in deep, and I kinda can't, things are busy around here

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

It can be whatever you want it to be.
Some post their thoughts on albums, what they mean to them, try to introduce classics to newbies and obscure classics to diehards that kind of thing. Whatever you choose. The more others do in-depth discussion the more will join in. Plus you can join in whenever you like if you are busy, all albums can still be discussed further down the line if you have been busy or just have something to say.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

i'd be into it.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

discussion promotes other discussion sort of thing. so the more who joins the better. Its running quite well just now. Its also fun, if you enjoy good discussion then its for you.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I've been pretty into the listening club. I dig it. but unfortunately, I haven't had the time to listen to as many of the picks as I would have liked.

original bgm, Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

you can catch up at any time

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

I agree with destroyer re Lee's Isis blurb.

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about. then, really? those are your "vivid" impressions? intense? interesting? then a tossed off line about broadrick that doesn't explain what he did w/the band or why it was good, then he's claiming that isis are one of the last bands where physical releases mattered? really? why?

Each sentence in Lee's little thing should have been the topic sentence for a paragraph. That would have been an interesting piece worth reading, and would have conveyed actual information to the reader. What we get, though, reads like he wrote it during a commercial break while watching TV.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

I don't give a crap about Isis, and I didn't think that was one of Cosmo's better pieces, but I've found a bunch of good stuff through Invisible Oranges.

tonight: baroness & mastodon! haven't seen either one before. ready to rock.

Baroness are super fun live because they HAVE so much fun live. Just seems like dudes really really love being up there playing their asses off.

Just a word of warning: I love mastodon, and I've seen them do great shows before, but they seem to be phoning in this tour. They were really... off when I saw them.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Friday, 21 May 2010 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not really surprised, they've been touring non-stop since Crack the Skye came out.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 21 May 2010 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

touring non-stop usually renders a band capable of turning in a killer performance if the audience is up for it tho

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 21 May 2010 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

I suppose but it also seems like it can wear a band down eventually.

i'm more psyched for baroness, but i imagine a good mastodon show would be awesome.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Friday, 21 May 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

(also v. curious what kind/size crowd this show will draw in knoxville. one of the things with metal right now is it's sort of hard to know how big the local fanbase is, and who's in it.)

Baroness show at Bowery Ballroom in Manhat was super, super packed.

Is it far? Is it far? Is it far? (Jon Lewis), Friday, 21 May 2010 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

Baroness were great as usual. I got the feeling that Mastodon were sick of playing Crack the Skye in its entirety, but they felt obligated to because they paid for the backdrop video for the entire album. Okay, the second part of that sentence is my theory, but the first part was observation.

lol yes to put it mildly

they end up arguing about politics on ilx, that is how bad it gets

For those of you with a tolerance for Gothic Metal, I'm liking the new Lacrimas Profundere a lot more than I did anything else I've heard from them. Late Sentenced-ish, but not as poppy as HIM. Dark and elegant.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 21 May 2010 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

i have zero

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

For those of you with no tolerance for Gothic Metal, I recommend avoiding the new Lacrimas Profundere.

I'll try to phrase all my endorsements as warnings from now on.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

hey, you got me to download it (legally), and I hated their last album.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Friday, 21 May 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

ok so mastodon ROCKED. it's true i think that the second half, after the crack the skye set, was louder and harder. and i'm sort of dubious of the whole "perform the album" approach in any setting. but it's not like crack the skye was bad, it was fun. and then things really took off. baroness was great, too. rambunctious but right on it. and seeing them live helped me focus on their rhytmic fluidity, they're less afraid of groove than a lot of modern metal bands. (a friend of mine thinks this has to do with atlanta, and i suspect he's right.) anyway, it struck me that both bands have great drummers, but in very different ways.

BRING YOUR DAUGHTER TO THE SLAUGHTER

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Saturday, 22 May 2010 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

Are there any doom metal bands that use sitar? Want sitar metal.

a more happy, spress-free life (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 23 May 2010 07:11 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know about doom bands doing that - it wouldn't surprise me to hear sitar on an Om album; there are a couple of death metal bands using older traditional instruments, but usually as mood/texture enhancers, or in interludes rather than within the song. Melechesh and Nile. Also Karl S. from Nile's side project is sort of droney-ambient "middle eastern" style stuff, but it's not metal.

the mom most likely to comprehend juggalos (J0hn D.), Sunday, 23 May 2010 10:20 (sixteen years ago)

I think there's a sitar in "Funeral of Dreams" on the new Cathedral. And yes, definitely OM.

Thijs, Sunday, 23 May 2010 10:36 (sixteen years ago)

Nebula albums always had a track or 2 with sitar.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 23 May 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)
