Patton/Melvins ATP was the last time I saw them and they had the misfortune of being after Torche downstairs in Reds (the legendary show just after Montoya was kicked out that he insisted on playing which led to an... interesting... mood on stage) and up against Zu in Reds. In those comparisons they ended up feeling kind of boring.

could be wrong tho - I had an album of theirs and I don't remember any flags goin' up! I'll look around, don't wanna wrongly think of a band as nazi who isn't

I know they've done shenanigans like dressing up in SS uniforms, giving the Hitler salute, and naming their first demo Fuck Your Jewish God, but they've said in interviews that they think NSBM is stupid, so I can't tell whether they're doing it for shock value/irony or because they're big Third Reich fans.

i wish there were a little spreadsheet i could consult when i want to figure out if the metal band i like is NS or not

saw isis open for tool just before they put out in the absence of truth and thought they were pretty solid. my friends, who were unfamiliar with their stuff, thought they were boring.

so i managed to get tickets to see them play with cave in in montreal. i'm pretty excited.

Repost: We played with Isis on the Celestial tour. Lineup was Soilent Green, Isis, Witch Mountain, and a little known local band called YOB.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

and naming their first demo Fuck Your Jewish God

this always struck me a bit o_O

original bgm, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

Nazis or no, they smell terrible.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Is it true the 30th anniversary Ozzy remasters are restoring the original rhythm tracks?!?!

Is it far? Is it far? Is it far? (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

That's what the reputable black-sabbath.com said on the weekend. It's certainly cause for rejoicing, every time I hear the retouched songs on Sirius I cringe. It sounds awful and just plain wrong.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

I've never actually heard the retouched versions, which is how I'd like it to stay.

Is it far? Is it far? Is it far? (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

Probably only restored because they know that a) noone will buy the retouched ones, B) all the poor sods who have those will want to "upgrade" to the proper version therefore making the osbournes more money. It wont be because of anything else.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

I was just logging on to mention this good news, haha.

Sharon's getting soft!

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

Soft like a fox, as Herman's pointed out...

Is it far? Is it far? Is it far? (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

I have the original versions of both in my iPod, but I don't currently own them in physical form, and since these are deluxe anniversary editions I'm expecting bonus tracks and maybe even a contemporaneous live disc appended to each, so I'll be picking them up.

Man, kind of depressing reading all the comments on Invisible Oranges and other sites about Isis calling it quits. I realize it may just be the vocal minority, but I didn't realize there was so much hatred of them for what they inspired. I'll certainly miss them and, hey, its not Pearl Jam's fault that Puddle of Mudd is a going concern in 2010.

like an hour ago i was just listening to an acapella version of "Blurry" a friend emailed me -- band's an ongoing inside joek

ksh, Thursday, 20 May 2010 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

IO encourages that kind of elitist bullshit, though. And it doesn't help that in his original post, Lee praised stuff about them that I don't like (the early EPs in particular, but also Panopticon). Lee's got "first-release/best-release" disease real bad.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 20 May 2010 02:26 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know why ppl read that blog

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

The main reason I read IO is when they post unsigned band demos, they got me way into Coffinworm last year.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 20 May 2010 02:33 (sixteen years ago)

wait, what's wrong w/ IO in general?

ksh, Thursday, 20 May 2010 03:07 (sixteen years ago)

(still trying to seek out good metal writing -- so, i've looked at IO a bit but not much)

ksh, Thursday, 20 May 2010 03:07 (sixteen years ago)

As Phil pointed out, it tends to be a hang-out for a vocal portion of the "tr00 metal" only/elitist crowd that do a lot more denouncing than they do championing.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 20 May 2010 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

i only have the vaguest idea of what "tr00 metal" even means -- gotta say, getting so far into indie for five years that you ignore most other music is nagl. but i'll catch up

ksh, Thursday, 20 May 2010 03:10 (sixteen years ago)

i think cosmo is an awful writer who rarely has anything interesting to say, but that could just be me

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 03:10 (sixteen years ago)

I don't find him "awful" by any means, but I don't like how he pads out so much of his writing with snarky commentary. Like I said, it seems like he spends more time talking about what he hates rather than what he loves, a trait which drives me crazy in any critic.

i dunno, like:

I discovered Isis’ discography – the prime years, anyway, 1998 to 2004 – nearly all at once. Thus, I forget which was my first Isis record. But I vividly remember my first impressions of each one. The Mosquito Control and The Red Sea EP’s blew me away with their intensity. Celestial, SGNL>05, Oceanic, the Oceanic remixes, and Panopticon were all “interesting”. They were all different, but a line clearly ran though them. The involvement of Justin Broadrick at times didn’t hurt. In this age of MP3’s, Isis may be one of the last bands whose physical releases were events.

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about. then, really? those are your "vivid" impressions? intense? interesting?

then a tossed off line about broadrick that doesn't explain what he did w/the band or why it was good, then he's claiming that isis are one of the last bands where physical releases mattered? really? why?

Anyone want to take a turn for a week curating Mordy's Metal Listening Club Volume #5: A Tribute To Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010) - Rainbow , Black Sabbath & DIO ? please post there and you can be pencilled in. If you just want to discuss the albums then you can join in to. all welcome even if you dont want to join in every week.

Would love to see skot and j0hn d,jeff t and adrien, chuck etc to pick a week. Seigbran is in! So please pop over.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about.

dude this is nitpicking & suggests a super-bad case of hater syndrome imo. note that I am not exactly anti-hater when it comes to keeping the poseurs out but you are sorta straining for the gnat here. framing when and how you first heard a band is a 100% decent way to start a piece - especially when he's pointing out that he came to the discography all at once, which is worth knowing about somebody's opinion: did you start with Altars of Madness, or Gateways, or, like this dude with Isis, did you probably grab a torrent of the whole catalog?

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

like, ok, but he doesn't use it to say anything interesting! his point is to the effect of "so i can't remember what i heard first, but i liked some of the early stuff and one thing from the later stuff"--and this is supposed to be a sendoff post for a band he actually likes!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

but yes i was nitpicking

call all destroyer, Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

Would love to see skot and j0hn d,jeff t and adrien, chuck etc to pick a week. Seigbran is in! So please pop over.

does picking involve anything besides saying what the records are? my sense has been I don't want to participate unless I can really get involved & in deep, and I kinda can't, things are busy around here

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 20 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

It can be whatever you want it to be.
Some post their thoughts on albums, what they mean to them, try to introduce classics to newbies and obscure classics to diehards that kind of thing. Whatever you choose. The more others do in-depth discussion the more will join in. Plus you can join in whenever you like if you are busy, all albums can still be discussed further down the line if you have been busy or just have something to say.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

i'd be into it.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

discussion promotes other discussion sort of thing. so the more who joins the better. Its running quite well just now. Its also fun, if you enjoy good discussion then its for you.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I've been pretty into the listening club. I dig it. but unfortunately, I haven't had the time to listen to as many of the picks as I would have liked.

original bgm, Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

you can catch up at any time

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

I agree with destroyer re Lee's Isis blurb.

first a boring, super blogging "i first heard band x" sentence that no one actually cares about. then, really? those are your "vivid" impressions? intense? interesting? then a tossed off line about broadrick that doesn't explain what he did w/the band or why it was good, then he's claiming that isis are one of the last bands where physical releases mattered? really? why?

Each sentence in Lee's little thing should have been the topic sentence for a paragraph. That would have been an interesting piece worth reading, and would have conveyed actual information to the reader. What we get, though, reads like he wrote it during a commercial break while watching TV.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 20 May 2010 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

I don't give a crap about Isis, and I didn't think that was one of Cosmo's better pieces, but I've found a bunch of good stuff through Invisible Oranges.
