As for the Aphex thing, my point was simply that the same thing was said about him w/ respect to gear. And frankly, a lot more of his stuff sounds boring in retrospect than people would care to admit today.

right, the notion that people still genuinely like alot of his music is impossible, they just don't care to admit it's boring.

The Aphex Twin thing is on some serious omgwtf shit though. Just because two artists made their own gear doesn't mean their music sounds alike, or even if it does, that there's a necessary universal love of one to the exclusion of the other. Some people will love D&G because they made their own gear without actually listening to the music. Some people loved RDJ for the same reasons. This doesn't mean appreciation of that fact means you'll like both artists, or either, or that you can't enjoy the music and also like the self-made approach. Or hate the music and, etc etc.

Agreed.

And amon, perhaps you could take this a touch less personally -- Matos was the one I was jibing, it was in good fun/jest/etc., and frankly, it was based on what now appears to be someone who was just making fun of his posts here.

Re. Aphex, I'm just saying that there's a good argument to be made that a lot of Aphex's music is a lot less compelling today than it appeared a decade ago. I'm saying that some people may not be jumping to say they loved it then and feel less enthused about it today because some people just don't like to admit when they're wrong.

And this was related to Delia and Gonzalez only in the sense that if people were using their "building their own gear thing" as a mystique-builder, well, I think we can all agree the mystique's been peeled off Aphex these last few years. So let's just save us all the trouble of rehashing it for these guys. Who are fine, but hardly Aphex at his apex even.

aphex didn't make his own gear. it was a joke that interviewers took seriously and people ran with it.

i just think it funny to say that to like aphex's music you must have some ulterior motive ("they were wrong, blinded by mystique, they won't admit it yet") and yet delia & gonzales detractors must not understand the music ("they just don't get it")

So is there still any love for this thing or has everyone decided it's not as compelling after letting it digest. I've heard Black Spring (thanks Stypod) and LOVED it. I went ahead and picked it up, and I couldn't be happier. I don't understand the stance that it is overly repetitive. I haven't once felt like any of the tracks weren't going somewhere and the random embelishments throughout completely keep me interested. After the first few listens, this feels like a great record.

I'm disappointed with this. From cursory descriptions, I was expecting something more like Music for Airports or SAW II, but it sounds like those bad "laser light show" 70s electronic albums by Tangerine Dream and Terry Riley that I can't stand.

I still love this album. I listen to a lot of ambient music when I am just chilling out at home or going to sleep, but this album is actually something I can focus on while at doing repetitive tasks at work or on the bus home.

it's like that but not as interesting or good. which isn't to say it's bad, it just doesn't do anything for me that early kraftwerk/td/oldfield/Jean Michel Jarre don't do.

three months pass...

J.D.Twitch djed here in austin, and I asked him about the Carl Craig mix of Relevee, and he said only Tim Sweeney and His self have copies and they had to sign a note of sorts not to leak the track. He said it's due out in april. I'm really looking forward to hearing this.

By the way JD Twitch was very friendly,a really nice guy. He played a great instore at this clothing store. He played a great edit of 'Behind the Wheel" that made me want to dance. I had to work tonight, so I sadly could not hear him play in a proper setting, where I could dance.

(sorry, shameless). So the Relevee 12" will have Carl Craig, the DFA and Baby Ford Remixes plus an alternate LP version that is way more rhythmically driven, i.e. has a very gentle 4/4 kick under it. We are working on a full 13 minute video in March w/ assume vivid astro focus and are aiming for a May worldwide release on double 12" and enhanced CD. There is a chance the CD will also have the full version of the song "#5", which appeared on the DFA Holiday mix. Maybe not. White labels will be out soon and look for 2 different versions of the dfa and carl craig remixes to appear on some of the promos.....

"them" is one man, Peter Ford, and he is a legendary dance music figure who has been making classic rave/house records since the eighties, (Ford Trax is a classic) and now makes pretty hard techno these days.
