And Force Majeure is generally seen as their last great album.
By ambient fans, I would guess. "White Eagle" is a great piece of arpeggio-led melodic instrumental synth music.

There are some not on the list that have some great music, the Sorcerer soundtrack has some really twisted stuff and I think Tangerine Dream's early to mid-80s records are still pretty good like Poland, Tangram, Exit and Le Parc. They might not be anyone's favorite, but there are some quality tracks on those later records. Sorcerer came out right in the middle of their 70s analog peak, so there are some really good stuff on that soundtrack.

EXIT is particularly great

I will check out Exit. I think a mate of mine got that and Le Parc quite cheap some years ago. Will ask him about it.
If anyone want's to list the great tracks from 1980 after then I would be happy to try check them out.

"rubycon", but mainly because it's the last one i listened to and i can't remember whether or not i prefer "phaedra" (i don't think i do).

When I was a first-year undergrad, I started with the £3.99 Virgin Value LPs and soon hoovered up most of the rest of their catalogue trying to find another Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares. I didn't and had an anti-epiphany listening to Poland or somesuch '80s live LP and decided to sell the lot.
So I'll have to go for Phaedra.

The atypical Electronic Meditation gets my vote. Real-life drums make that and Alpha Centauri my favourites of the 7 or 8 TDs I've owned over the years. A reference point demonstrating the difference between orbiting the earth and merely floating motionless.
(I too wish the Sorcerer soundtrack was here.)

"Epsilon" is great - it was recorded halfway between "Phaedra" and "Rubycon", so how could it not be? First half of title track is a floaty mellotron piece that is really beautiful.

I've decided I really don't like "Force Majeure" very much apart from that awesome end section to "Thru Metamorphic Rocks". The rest of it is too like tasteful prog rock for my taste, too 'musical', and too much guitar and, as I think I've said ad nauseum, I don't like Edgar Froese's guitar playing at all.

I agree with you vis-a-vis Froese's axe-spanking. Dude seemed to think he was some kind of Neil Young-manqué, but he really hadn't the chops. None of that detracts from his talent as a visionary electronicist, mind.

Also, I don't think they were very good at writing melodies - Schmoelling was the melody guy, and he didn't join them till later, I think? This album is just Froese and Franke, right?

dang, i am such a doofus. i love the tangerine dream records i have (zeit, phaedra, stratosphear, and Froese's Aqua), and i've heard their 80s music through various film soundtracks (ok, Legend mostly), but i had no idea about Force Majeure. i kind of assumed their band trajectory was the ambient early stuff --> soundtracks and more cheesy stuff i knew they had more traditional band roots but i didn't realize they had an album like this, and especially not one in the late 70s! oops.

Also, since TD literally invented that sequencer-driven style of composition, it's kind of a low blow to insinuate that their use of the technique was uninspired!
