there's meant to be a new album this month, isn't there? or has it been (surprise surprise) delayed?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 2 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bouncin' Back" is awesome. The rest of Tarantula, meh. So I suspect I respond more to the Neptunes prod than necessarily Mystikal.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

BIG TRUCK DRIVER, whore ass.
;-)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah. And Pussy Crook too.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

He was a good judge on one of those MTV talent contests. And a good soldier, too.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Though what kind of jungle camouflage is this?

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yes yes the jungle sun's harsh rays will bounce off mystikal's necklace alerting the enemy to his thugged-out presence but doesn't anybody know anything about the NEW ALBUM?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Mo, mitch. generally, it's you that knows about these things.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hasn't he been busy with that whole sexual assault conviction lately?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Who hasn't?

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, having a song titled "Pussy Crook" probably didn't help his case.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

PS. it's good to have you back nordic

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mo mitch, mo problems

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

PS. it's good to have you back nordic

Aaaah, that's sweet. it's good to be back. Admit it, you only just realized this was me, didn'tcha?

Check your Friendster, Horace.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I knew it was you. It just wasn't nice to have you back until today.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, well I'm back on coffee today, that's why.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Against doctor's orders.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone ever seen Mystikal and Chris Tucker in the same room at the same time?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
i've been diggin Let's Get Ready recently, good driving music. but what is the deal with that sound effect that appears in almost every Mystikal track. you know, that sound that's like a cross between air being slowly let out of a balloon and a trumpet squeaking a nasty note. is that some sort of trademark of his? and why that sound effect in particular?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

its pretty detroity in a way, isnt it?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

his No Limit albums are definitely not dodgy (this thread is 3 years old though so i'll assume you lot have gotten over your kneejerk late-90s-hip-hop-that-is-actually-popular hate[winky]); both unpredictable and ghetto fabulous are absolute classics. especially unpredictable; all pristine mario 64 style beats by KLC and Rick Rock balanced out with the scary/sad pac photocopies like "born 2 be a soldier"/"ghetto child" you should check it out!

xp

scg, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

i will!

mystikal always slipped under my radar for some reason

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

man look at the damn thread i repped for unpredictable back then!! that was 1 my biggest h.s. no limit classics and the 1st place i heard alot of bay mcs like e-40 and b-legit too. dont even know where the CD is now but from memory my favs are probly 'ghetto child' where even p got lyrics on that, & 'aint no limit', classic silkk verse on that beat, & 'born to be a soldier', mac startin out w/ assassin, soldier, something, murderer, sonofabitch, something, house burglar

3, Thursday, 28 July 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Candicissima (candicissima), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

ghetty green (eman), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

42, Friday, 29 July 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

allmusic rap reviews are fun!

Review by Leo Stanley
It's hard to excuse the very name of Concentration Camp, along with the title of their debut album, Da Holocaust. Certainly, good taste has never been an important factor in either hip-hop or rock & roll, but this goes beyond the acceptable, mainly because the group is so bloody average. There is nothing particularly noteworthy in their pedestrian gangsta rap — musically and lyrically, they do little more than wallow in clichés. If they were as provocative as their name, it would be a different matter — it would provide justification for such shock tactics. As it stands, it's just average gangsta rap from average gangstas.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

u know i interviewed dude from them back in december, hes a christian rapper now but he had some real crazy gossip and shit from workin at p&p from 97-2000, i was gonna put them all together into some kinda article and pitch it to magazine but i got bored w/ it

3!2@!, Friday, 29 July 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

haha average gangsta rap from average gangstas!!!!

3!2@!, Friday, 29 July 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

That sounds awesome! I came across their website once, it was fun to browse through.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Leo Stanley knows the hustle.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

btw alot of the shit you said in the big tymers review is what i was gonna say in my p&p article, about how even these no name young'n rappers could get pen & pixel covers and suddenly theyre outta the hood, theyre drivin a solid gold cutlass thru outer space space fightin robots w/ a kings scepter or whatever the fuck

3, Friday, 29 July 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

i mean i didnt wanna turn it into some kinda afrofuturism bullshit but it really was this ghetto escapism, star in your own movie for under $500 (and before p invented the rap movie w/ im bout it)

3, Friday, 29 July 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i know they released the truth in 2004, but that's not actually classic tru, is it?

scg, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I didnt like The Truth very much, the single was pretty awesome but I think my favorite track was the C-Murder one and I'd rather just listen to C-Murder's new album in that case. True is great though! If you haven't heard it check it out, I think its '95. Its got "bout it bout it" and that beautiful "fuck them hoes" track (yes yes i know) with that saxophone and mia x threatening to make your mouth look like a piano.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

here's icarus' post on 'early mystikal,' I figure it relates to this thread. I'm not familiar enough w mystikal's catalogue beyond the singles and airbrushed t-shirts girls wore in high school to really say much though.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

"y'all ain't ready yet" is fucking great, btw, and has terrific lyrics:

let's get this straight from the jump
i ain't playing with your bitch ass
these outside niggas that run to the mic better come clean
fuckin with that saudi arabian
desert storm veteran 12th ward offspring
i'm runnin these niggas to the jets,
to the hills, to the back of the tracks
ask them hos - did i do that?
i'm coming boisterous with 5 million switches
i'm the man with single and double and triple
and four five six time them bitches
i'm the nigga with the go 'head, fuckin your bitch up in your bed
standin' 5 foot 'leven dick crooked like a roach leg
much bone and i don't fail a test
little nigga fuck hos both sides of the river
i can't be fucked with, you can't touch this better grab hold
bitch I'm so cold, i'm like a 24 year-old north pole!

and

you'll never catch me cause i'm swift as a hyena
gimme the chance I'll rock the lakefront arena
like teena marie be rockin tipitina's (damn gina)
tall dark strong long and lean ain't nobody comin cleaner

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The double-CD set that No Limit godfather Master P envisioned as his final solo album, MP Da Last Don was greeted with reams of press clippings by the media and open arms by the public, who sent it to 112 on the charts, the week before it was scheduled to be released. All this means is that Master P's master business plan worked -- he was able to position himself as the leader of the underground just to sell records. And there's no other way to view MP Da Last Don; it's nothing but product, albeit well-made product. Spanning two CDs and 29 songs, the album is more of an advertisement for upcoming No Limit releases than a last will and testament. All of the No Limit roster appears somewhere on the disc, and info about upcoming releases (some of which have been in development for a year and a half) litters the liner notes. Master P himself makes his presence felt only because the formula MP Da Last Don follows is one he invented. If you've ever heard a No Limit record, you'll know what to expect -- cribbed hooks, predictable bass grooves, and drum loops, the standard gangsta lyrical clichés. The law of averages dictates that there will be a few passable tracks on an album this size, but there is no variety here at all -- you could start the album at any point and feel like you've heard it all before. So, Da Last Don isn't a grand final statement from Master P, though its crass commercialism and blatant hucksterism offers as accurate a summation of Master P's career as anyone could hope.

ghetty green (eman), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On the surface, Ghetto D may look like another piece of product from Master P's No Limit empire, and there's a certain amount of truth to that. Master P is a master marketer and knows how to create demand for his product, which means informing the public that it is out there. He spreads the word about future No Limit releases throughout Ghetto D: artwork for forthcoming albums forms 90 percent of the album's artwork, and No Limit artists rap on the record as much as Master P himself. As a result, Ghetto D plays much like one of the West Coast Bad Boyz discs -- it sounds like a various-artists sampler. And not only does it sound like a various-artists record, it also sounds like a virtual catalog of '90s rap styles, from wimpy Bone Thugs-n-Harmony ballads ("I Miss My Homies") to Wu-Tang craziness ("Let's Get 'Em") to G-funk ("Weed & Money"). Master P is a consummate rip-off artist, capable of copying any number of popular records and styles with flair. He's done this on almost all of No Limit's records, but what makes Ghetto D different is the ease of the whole thing. Master P is using better equipment this time around, which helps him make better, more seamless records, thereby making his facsimiles sound similar to the originals. The shameless rip-offs make Ghetto D an entertaining listen -- it's fun to guess who the No Limit crew is ripping off now -- yet it's hampered by its ridiculous 80-minute running time. Theoretically, it gives you more bang for your buck, but by the ninth song, "Captain Kirk," the album seems endless. However, that overindulgence is a hallmark of Master P and No Limit, and that's what makes Ghetto D his definitive statement.

One of hip-hop's most unique voices, Mystikal, will be performing at SOB's on Tuesday May 1st 2012. Fresh out of prison, this is Mystikal's first show in New York in over 8 years. Looks like this may be his last show in a while, and you know the energy is going to be INsane, so you definitely don't want to miss it. Danger!
