I would agree that Levin is a stellar player. His extensive amount of session work proves that all in it's own. And I would also agree that the 6 man lineup of KC was a flawed concept (but, on more thorough listening, I think you will find that the true masturbatory cluttering was mainly due to Bruford's need to show off his chops with little sympathy towards the actual music that was being made by the others). Gunn acted more as a third guitarist (so techniquely he cluttered up the space with Belew as Fripp was blissfully adding his soundscapes)while Levin handled the bass playing.
Gunn is a good player who truly utilizes the Stick to it's fullest capabilities. As bahtology so aptly pointed out, his ability to play melody lines while still laying down the bass parts is of a very high caliber.
I would not only judge him on what he has done with that dinosaur band. I would cite his first solo album 1000 Years, as well as his contributions to Sunday All Over The World, Toni Child's This Woman's Boat, John Paul Jones' Thunderthief, David Rice's Green Electric, and most impressively, his work with Sylvian and Fripp during the early nineties. There are others I could mention that are equally good, all a much better case to make for Gunn as a top notch player, all much more musical than the noisefests that KC has put forth in recent years.

I saw Bruce Cockburn in the late 1980s (around the time of "If I Had A Rocket Launcher") and he had a Stick player handling the bass and keyboard parts at once. Pretty tastefully done too.

SAQQARA DOGS HELL YEAH

I don't really like nu-King Crimson but the show I saw in '95 with the 6-person lineup was some fine stuff.

Hah! That Greg Howard Beatles cover is kinda cool actually, but dude does some weird (not always in a good way) jazz fusion stuff around town too. His band is called Azul, which is pretty much what a groovy jazz fusion band in 2014 is gonna be called.

At least I think it is Stick, it's sometimes hard to tell with Levin.

five years pass...

Emmett Chapman invented a new way to make music in 1969. He called it "Free Hands", and in 1974 he began teaching it to new Stick players and guitarists interested in tapping. We offer a growing catalog of books, DVDs and CDs by experienced teachers, plus links to free online videos.

Every Wednesday night a Stick player gigs at my local brewer but refuses to do anything other than recycle Santana noodling. Maddening.
