NEWSFLASH: Once a song has been leaked onto the internet, it’s a wrap. It’s over. There’s nothing you can do about it, and by asking a few bloggers to take it down, all you’re doing is pissing off those few bloggers in your futile attempt to stop the unstoppable. If you go online and see that your song leaked, the best thing you can do is fume for a minute, get it out your system and keep it moving. Anything else is a waste of everybody’s time. You can continue to deny this undisputable fact or you can accept it, it’s up to you. I know the internet is this big mysterious beast that is sometimes beneficial to you and sometimes not, but you are never going to be able to control it and once you understand and accept that, we can all move forward.

But then there is the issue of unsanctioned, premature leaks. These are the songs we are most likely to get C&D’d for. These are the tracks that are unfinished, or were stolen and leaked against the wishes of the artist or simply aren’t supposed to be out yet. So we’ll get our hands on them, post them and then end up having to take the song down. And it’s at this point that some of us go on Twitter to complain (read: cry), or start drafting a big angry blog post about why the label that threatened us is the devil, or whatever. And then neutral folks who don’t blog or record music (civilians) read those rants and say to themselves: “Shut the fuck up crybaby blogger, you have nothing to complain about, it was never your music to post in the first place, yadda yadda.”

And I guess that’s understandable. We probably do come across like colossal douchebags at times. But what folks don’t understand is that there’s usually a deeper, underlying reason for our anger. For one, how the fuck are we supposed to know if a song isn’t finished, or wasn’t sanctioned for release or whatever? If you don’t pre-emptively tell us, “hey, you might come across a leaked copy of so-and-so’s song with so-and-so, can you please refrain from posting it”, then how are we supposed to know? The vast majority of you label people don’t communicate with us on that level, but yet you have no problem sending us unsolicited, boilerplate emails when you have some wack radio single you want posted everywhere. So we get a song, post it and then turn around to a fucking legal threat from some fuck head suit in our inbox and we momentarily spazz. So we’re human, fucking sue us (kidding, please don’t).

^^ this is monumentally infuriating horseshit coming from a site who has, many times, posted some track totally upfront about "this is a guest verse Kanye recorded for an uncompleted song" or "these are T.I.'s scratch vocals for a Dr. Dre record" and is part of a so-called 'new music cartel' that constantly crows about their WORLD PREMIERES of frequently stolen/hacked music my major artists and, like, tagging the audio or making special artwork for their 'exclusive' leaks of someone else's song like they're a fucking label or something. these sites probably get a song and post it in a matter of minutes if not seconds, but the onus is on the label to send out pre-emptive announcements of "hey this track is out there but please don't post it"? fuck. outta. here.

i probably come off psycho about this but tbh the idea of any musicians, even spoiled rich ones, not being able to record anything without some studio mole rushing every demo and rough mix out to the whole world is fucked up. plus i have to wonder if anyone is even making money off these kinds of scams -- at least in the 90s a rap bootlegger stood to make a nice profit if he got an early copy of a big record, now what's even the motivation besides just having more more more content that'll slide off the front page in 8 hours no matter what anyway?

When a song leaks on 5000 sites and only a handful of popular blogs are C&D’d. Then you ask somebody at the label why you’re being singled out and they tell you because your site is so big. Oh so it’s cool if the song leaks to 2,000 people, but not 20,000? And now I’m the only asshole who doesn’t have the song posted so I look like I’m slipping.

i'm pretty sure getting a c&d for some joint that's already on your third page is prob some badge of honor & an indicator that you are 'important,' not that you're "slipping" and your site is gonna lose readers. don't take the c&d like a chump.

oh i know the big blogs make at least OK money off ads and such, that's not really what i was talking about -- i mean specifically whether there's any real financial worth or incentive in them leaking obviously unauthorized/unfinished records or whether the people that hack or steal those songs from studios and e-mail accounts actually sell them to the highest bidder, or just do it for the clout/thrill/fuck of it

yeah idk -- can't imagine that a dude like eskay would pay up for an unreleased song that he could just steal off someone else's site in a second -- i'm sure there are hackers who do it for the thrill of hacking (as all hackers do) and eskay is always insinuating that ppl in rappers' camps are sending him music, and that just might be a spite thing or w/e -- can't imagine that any posts on nah right are more important than any others because they rarely even ever post anything after the jump -- i.e. my pageview to download the new drake track is "nah right page 2" which has vado mixtape teaser trailer teaser videos on it

i would be interested to see how many hits they get from people googling shit -- i just googled "drake find your love" and nah right was only on the second page of google results and for "drake miss me" they're on page 3

yeah that's imo the worst part of this -- the kind of wanton, dispassionate way all this gets handled. a bunch of people work on a record, buy and sell beats and guest verses, try to plan things out, and then it gets leaked not so much because there are diehard fans who can't wait to hear it and will love it but more likely because some pageview-hungry assholes just need grist for the mill, and they and their readers will have totally forgotten about the whole thing a week later when there a dozen other equally high profile songs to download, bitch about and delete.
