Has anyone heard the new Howl record on Relapse? Saw it for $8.99 yesterday, didn't know anything about it.
― my baby's got the bans (ksh), Thursday, 13 May 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
cmon, you have to go see gorguts!!
― original bgm, Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:21 (sixteen years ago)
Recently downloaded the beep-less promo from Relapse, but I haven't given it a spin yet. Heard encouraging things though. I'll update after I listen.

The new Howl's pretty decent. The expected early Mastodon/early HoF influences are there (more bludgeoningly heavy than refined), but there's a little Melvins influence in there as well.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
that sounds pretty good
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
mmm, i should pick it up! thanks A
― my baby's got the bans (ksh), Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
yeah the howl record is decent. kinda samey, but i've only listened to it twice so far.
that melvins album is really weird, but really freaking good too. some of their older stuff just puts me to sleep because it sounds way too plodding, but this album is great. the first song had me laughing quite a bit.
so i've just read a month's worth of this thread and have finally caught up. bands i need to act soon on are: october file, cathedral, ludicra, triptykon, armored saint, vasaeleth, immolation, nachtmystium.
i'm already loving shining, daughters, DEP, rotting christ & deftones.
am i missing anything?
― borntohula, Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)
I think the Ihsahn record is well worth hearing, one of my favorites of the year (just behind Ludicra and maybe Triptykon).
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:49 (sixteen years ago)
i gave it a shot but was turned off by how clean some of it sounded. i'll give it a few more listens.
has anyone heard monolith by in memoriam? i keep hearing good things about it, and it has placed rather high on the RYM charts. i don't base all of my musical choices by their charts, but frequent the site to see if i'm missing out on anything.
― borntohula, Thursday, 13 May 2010 19:16 (sixteen years ago)
Cannibal Corpse closing their US leg tonight, and I will be there for the second time. should be fun. I pulled out the Bleeding again it's surprisingly better than I remembered it.

Joey Belladonna is back in Anthrax, apparently. Until tomorrow, when they announce that John Bush is back once more.

Actually, I'm eagerly awaiting the inevitable Neil Turbin reunion.

I totally love the Belladonna era of Anthrax, but he was such a unique vocalist. Like his voice was poppy, but not in the way you typically associate with metal (ie, power metal vocalists). I thought he best fit on stuff like Spreading the Disease, although at times he sounded out of place with the more aggressive stuff on Among the Living (which mind you is still awesome).
― Sherman Helmsley Teabag (Cattle Grind), Saturday, 15 May 2010 21:11 (sixteen years ago)
he was awful
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 15 May 2010 21:21 (sixteen years ago)
I'm partial to Belladonna as well, I come from that era. Bush never seemed right, he was always "the dude from Armored Saint" in my mind. Of course that's sort of because he was given some pretty mediocre new material to sing on.
― A. Begrand, Sunday, 16 May 2010 02:43 (sixteen years ago)
I've only seen Anthrax once (on the tour they did in 1990 with Public Enemy, Primus and Young Black Teenagers) and Belladonna was still in the band, but I think he left right after that. I thought his stage presence was all wrong for them, even if his voice occasionally worked. (I can still take some cuts from Persistence of Time, but every other Belladonna-era album has one or two very low peaks and a bunch of Marianas-trench-deep valleys)

I don't want to write an obit piece. But it looks like I should be getting ready to.
― A. Begrand, Sunday, 16 May 2010 10:33 (sixteen years ago)
Same here. This is so terrible, "A Light in the Black" is almost too much to take right now.
― Thijs, Sunday, 16 May 2010 10:36 (sixteen years ago)
Have to say, that was a lousy and irresponsible move by the otherwise reputable Metal Insider blog to break the story rumour. They claimed to have confirmation, but they didn't say who their source was, and they were proven wrong.
― A. Begrand, Sunday, 16 May 2010 11:12 (sixteen years ago)
WHAT? What's wrong with Dio?
― Sherman Helmsley Teabag (Cattle Grind), Sunday, 16 May 2010 15:15 (sixteen years ago)
i mean I know he's old and all but like srsly I might get real depressed if he dies too :/. we already lost Peter Steele this year!
he has been fighting cancer for at least a year iirc; yesterday a rumor was spreading that he had died.

man, me and a couple buddies were just talking about this friday night. how dio was one of the most positive guys out there and if anyone could beat this, it might be him.
fuck.
RIP. :-(

You better pick a Dio related work for the listening group this week Alan.

yeah, no doubt.
this sucks.

just one of the best performers I've ever seen too. guy was great til the very end.

Goddammit. :( One of the most golden voices in metal. Holy Diver is a classic. God I mean I know metalheads aren't exactly immune to dying, but this was a legend...man. Not just some passerby.
― Sherman Helmsley Teabag (Cattle Grind), Sunday, 16 May 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
This seriously sucks and is not acceptable AT ALL.
― Felix Frankfurter, Man Of Justice (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 16 May 2010 21:23 (sixteen years ago)
Please tell me this doesn't come in threes. Peter Steele and Dio and it's not even June :/
― Sherman Helmsley Teabag (Cattle Grind), Sunday, 16 May 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)
There is no :-( big enough for this. Ronnie James Dio was one of my all-time favorite performers, and always has been. Last in Line was one of the first true metal records I got, and I must have listened to it dozens of times. I met the man once, at an after party, and he was basically the nicest guy ever. He even gave me a hug. Rest in peace. This is a true tragedy.
― X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)
sorry to break from Dio, but I got the Warbeast album today. It's remarkable in how ignoring the quality of songwriting, sonically this sounds like it was recorded in 1991. But the songs? Well, so far I'm digging them, although I don't know how I'd rate it with thrash classics like Insult to Injury or Handle with Care, but I like the vocalist and the riffing.
― Sherman Helmsley Teabag (Cattle Grind), Sunday, 16 May 2010 23:50 (sixteen years ago)
Sitting here on my second spin through the Dio anthology today. Damn. :(
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 May 2010 03:38 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ the Sabbath comp or the Dio solo + Sabbath comp?
― Felix Frankfurter, Man Of Justice (Jon Lewis), Monday, 17 May 2010 16:46 (sixteen years ago)
That Dio compilation Rhino put out, Stand Up and Shout, is a really great overview. Disc 1 is Elf, Rainbow and Sabbath; Disc 2 is solo stuff, and there's only four tracks in common between it and the Sabbath comp The Dio Years, so really, you need both.
