Ha ha ha,well I guess I'm not the only one who thought your take on this was a little excessive then -- however, absent that post, less so for sure.

Anyway, I hear linear development -- you don't. 'Nuff said, I guess.

As for the Aphex thing, my point was simply that the same thing was said about him w/ respect to gear. And frankly, a lot more of his stuff sounds boring in retrospect than people would care to admit today. Perhaps I'm making your point, however...

Gotta say I haven't been much interested to go back and listen to this ever again since the first few times. Weird.

As for the Aphex thing, my point was simply that the same thing was said about him w/ respect to gear. And frankly, a lot more of his stuff sounds boring in retrospect than people would care to admit today.

right, the notion that people still genuinely like alot of his music is impossible, they just don't care to admit it's boring.

amon (eman), Saturday, 1 October 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Or perhaps, they're wary of admitting they were wrong. Regardless, this was just part of the Aphex Mystique.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 1 October 2005 19:52 (eighteen years ago) link

wtf are you on about? i was wrong and i don't actually like his music? what else am i wrong about? please tell me you ridiculous typical ilm nutjob.

amon (eman), Saturday, 1 October 2005 20:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Stop sniping at details guys, can't we get back to talking how monotonous this Delia & Gavin stuff is? Just kidding, I like the album.

The Aphex Twin thing is on some serious omgwtf shit though. Just because two artists made their own gear doesn't mean their music sounds alike, or even if it does, that there's a necessary universal love of one to the exclusion of the other. Some people will love D&G because they made their own gear without actually listening to the music. Some people loved RDJ for the same reasons. This doesn't mean appreciation of that fact means you'll like both artists, or either, or that you can't enjoy the music and also like the self-made approach. Or hate the music and, etc etc.

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 1 October 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Agreed.

And amon, perhaps you could take this a touch less personally -- Matos was the one I was jibing, it was in good fun/jest/etc., and frankly, it was based on what now appears to be someone who was just making fun of his posts here.

Re. Aphex, I'm just saying that there's a good argument to be made that a lot of Aphex's music is a lot less compelling today than it appeared a decade ago. I'm saying that some people may not be jumping to say they loved it then and feel less enthused about it today because some people just don't like to admit when they're wrong.

And this was related to Delia and Gonzalez only in the sense that if people were using their "building their own gear thing" as a mystique-builder, well, I think we can all agree the mystique's been peeled off Aphex these last few years. So let's just save us all the trouble of rehashing it for these guys. Who are fine, but hardly Aphex at his apex even.

Ok?

Ok.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 1 October 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

aphex didn't make his own gear. it was a joke that interviewers took seriously and people ran with it.

i just think it funny to say that to like aphex's music you must have some ulterior motive ("they were wrong, blinded by mystique, they won't admit it yet") and yet delia & gonzales detractors must not understand the music ("they just don't get it")

amon (eman), Saturday, 1 October 2005 21:10 (eighteen years ago) link

What part about "some people" don't you get, amon?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 1 October 2005 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

i missed the appended term in the xpost

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 2 October 2005 01:49 (eighteen years ago) link

So is there still any love for this thing or has everyone decided it's not as compelling after letting it digest. I've heard Black Spring (thanks Stypod) and LOVED it. I'm thinking about picking this up today. Would the lovers (or haters) at the top of the thread care to update me as to their current opinion?

matt2 (matt2), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I still listen to it all the time.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

It's in my pile of things to play during my next acid/mushroom trip.

original plagiarist, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:44 (eighteen years ago) link

i study/read to it all the time. keeps me focused.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:39 (eighteen years ago) link

haha yes I should listen to really really boring music that doesn't do anything at all because like wow dude made his own gear

God, you're so unwelcome in Miami!

Anyway, my point is that you're completely by a few universes missing the point of dG&gR, so climb off your super-rocket.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Just heard it yesterday, DFA promo showed up at my radio station. Totally lovely space synth music, well worthy of some sustained attention.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I went ahead and picked it up, and I couldn't be happier. I don't understand the stance that it is overly repetitive. I haven't once felt like any of the tracks weren't going somewhere and the random embelishments throughout completely keep me interested. After the first few listens, this feels like a great record.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:53 (eighteen years ago) link

god, I listen to this album so very much. Plus it's getting me into Cluster and Gottsching and so on.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:54 (eighteen years ago) link

it's great to work/read/fuck to.

I'm really looking forward to picking this up. I've heard Black Spring from Stylus and need more!

I'm disappointed with this. From cursory descriptions, I was expecting something more like Music for Airports or SAW II, but it sounds like those bad "laser light show" 70s electronic albums by Tangerine Dream and Terry Riley that I can't stand.

"It sounds like those bad "laser light show" 70s electronic albums by Tangerine Dream and Terry Riley"

This is exactly why I like it! Early analogue sequencer TD and terry Riley are awesome.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 22 October 2005 00:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I still love this album. I listen to a lot of ambient music when I am just chilling out at home or going to sleep, but this album is actually something I can focus on while at doing repetitive tasks at work or on the bus home.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Saturday, 22 October 2005 00:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyone know if theyre touring.

I think they did a one off for Kosmiche radio show in london last year but it went under my radar.

might solve the presets and left the room debate.

Danny.

there was talk of them playing glasgow?

I know there's a DFA night in mid-november sometime

hosted by otimo at the at school

willem (willem), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

My sense is that Dom's otm. There's something decidedly less compelling about this music in the quasi-installation context than when it was T. Dream gunning for Deep Space. Eh...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
going to the London one tonight...

I totally cant wait.

If i had my druthers..Id go to the art school.

but them and optimo at the artschool might be too orangey for this crow.

after finally getting hold of the record i felt such an ass that i skipped out on the dfa showcase after hot chip and cut copy. arghhhhhhhhhhhhh

it's like that but not as interesting or good. which isn't to say it's bad, it just doesn't do anything for me that early kraftwerk/td/oldfield/Jean Michel Jarre don't do.

three months pass...
J.D.Twitch djed here in austin, and I asked him about the Carl Craig mix of Relevee, and he said only Tim Sweeney and His self have copies and they had to sign a note of sorts not to leak the track. He said it's due out in april. I'm really looking forward to hearing this.

Also they have a live show worth listening to here:feed://feeds.feedburner.com/ourdisco

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 24 February 2006 07:43 (eighteen years ago) link

james fucking friedman reviews it in the new xlr8r, so i'd probably count him among those who have it now. maybe.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 24 February 2006 07:55 (eighteen years ago) link

By the way JD Twitch was very friendly,a really nice guy. He played a great instore at this clothing store. He played a great edit of 'Behind the Wheel" that made me want to dance. I had to work tonight, so I sadly could not hear him play in a proper setting, where I could dance.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 24 February 2006 08:09 (eighteen years ago) link

i heard that jd twitch is an arrogant asshole who claims to have exclusives on dfa releases but is actually talking out his ass. who to believe?

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:10 (eighteen years ago) link

sorry, that's mean. it was nice to meet you jacobs. i was just joshing when i said i had to sign the official secrets act to get a copy of the delia and gavin carl craig remix. btw, the 'behind the wheel' was just the original. oh, and austin rocks!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 24 February 2006 12:25 (eighteen years ago) link

"btw, the 'behind the wheel' was just the original."

Ha ha that's great. This is a track that always makes me think "wait, am I hearing a remix?" It's so current sounding.

it is SUUUUCH good news that they are working with Assume Vivid Astro Focus!!!!

yeah, assume vivid astro focus are pretty cool (tho do remind me of Peter Max)

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 24 February 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Seriously, Behind the Wheel is that good, I need to give it another listen.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Saturday, 25 February 2006 00:48 (eighteen years ago) link

that carl craig remix was on a beatsinspace a few weeks back i think

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, check out D&G on the cover of the new Arthur! www.arthurmag.com
(sorry, shameless). So the Relevee 12" will have Carl Craig, the DFA and Baby Ford Remixes plus an alternate LP version that is way more rhythmically driven, i.e. has a very gentle 4/4 kick under it. We are working on a full 13 minute video in March w/ assume vivid astro focus and are aiming for a May worldwide release on double 12" and enhanced CD. There is a chance the CD will also have the full version of the song "#5", which appeared on the DFA Holiday mix. Maybe not. White labels will be out soon and look for 2 different versions of the dfa and carl craig remixes to appear on some of the promos.....

Christ I hope it does. The "ABA"/"#5" part is hands-down my favorite part of the Holiday Mix.

What's the Baby Ford mix sound like? I've never even heard of them before,

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 25 February 2006 04:49 (eighteen years ago) link

"them" is one man, Peter Ford, and he is a legendary dance music figure who has been making classic rave/house records since the eighties, (Ford Trax is a classic) and now makes pretty hard techno these days.

(that's an mpg of tim sweeney djing the cc relevee mix, if anyone's curious.)
