Denton sora sticks out like a sore thumb there, don't it?

Yay Denton, the home of happiness.

I saw Acid Mothers Temple w/Kinski at the Entry and thought they were fantastic..then a bunch of people I knew went to see them at the Triple Rock later on and said they sucked...I guess they had a more stripped down lineup and it was boring wank..the vers. I saw had about 6 or 7 people, super great chugga chugga space rockin' w/two people cranking on weird knob analog synths making sqwacks and squelches....sweet.

but maybe I have bad taste in psych and all these other folx are right...who knows?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

AMT are great and your friends are feebs. (But they could have easily just had a bad show.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:53 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah....I think it might have been a "lineup" thing...I think they said it was only a four-piece....focused mainly on guitar solos....the big lineup I saw (while obv. doing lots of solos) was more focused on building up into big Hawkwind bulldozing riffs....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Huh. Well that's weird, as last time I saw them they were a four piece and my god were they focused into major riff drone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess I could see them being a band that could be pretty completely diff. depending on what night you see them, though....prog/psych is prolly hit or miss by nature. Still, the show I saw was godhead...one of my favs of the last few years!

Especially liked that the small Japanese woman on analog synth was wearing a WWE Generation DX hockey jersey!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

as much as i fucking love AMT, i do think they suffer a bit from the loss of Cotton Casino--and her Steve Austin shirts

I think Amoeba or some listserv told me that this is the last hurrah for this incarnation of the band. Perhaps both lineups are touring?

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:27 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, i read somewhere that kawabata makoto is pretty sick of touring

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

they were a fourpiece last night, with a mix of droney riffage and monster solos from kawabata. i don't know their songs but the general pattern seemed to be 6 min of riff & variations -> 10 min freakout solo -> 6 min riff & winddown.

they didn't encore even though i thought we managed good applause for the crowd size (tiny by end)-- is this typical??

What's the tour-only release like this time around?

CID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO Iao Chant From The Cosmic Inferno (Ace Fu) cd 14.98
Yes it's another Acid Mother Temple album! Apparently as necessary to life as food or oxygen, for some people...or so it would seem from the band's oft-remarked-upon release schedule, which is in fact matched by the demand for their prolific output. Seriously, though, while we joke about how many records these hairies release, we also always have to perk up and pay attention when there's a new AMT opus. 'Cause most of the time, they're well worth hearing -- this one in particular certainly is, we've gotta say.
Consisting of one 50 plus minute long track entitled "OM Riff from The Cosmic Inferno", this actually sounds quite a bit like AQ faves Circle! Andee thought it *was* Circle when he first heard it, actually. The "chant" you hear is all hyper and Magmoid, twinned with a Circle-like, chugging, insistent rhythm that plows through a universe of swooshing bleeping blooping electronic space soundz. It's repetitive and hypnotic and maybe even spiritually meaningful. An electric Buddhist drug thing you wouldn't understand...but it's fun trying. The chanting gives way to purely instrumental, sorta psychedelic soundtracky passages, but then at at about 23 minutes a heavy, groovy bassline kicks in, and Kawabata unleashes the motorpsycho darkness of his guitar, getting just a wee bit Keiji Haino on us. Later still the chant resurfaces, even more cranked and intense and things just get crazier and heavier. It's all very kosmic and freaky, reminding us like we said of Circle, and even darker stuff like Yeti and Tarantula Hawk, and of course '70s forefathers Hawkwind. And oh yeah Kawabata busts out the hurdy gurdy on here as well. Recommended, especially to AMT fans who also like Circle (which is, we'd imagine, a lot of you).

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:14 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, no encores from them is pretty typical. i've only ever seen em do one encore and it was a one-minute song.

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Yay to the sound of that -- but is that the actual on-tour-only thing or a separate 'regular' release? They usually sell at least one new CDR on the road.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Yea, I don't know -- but I wanted to highlight the name lineup change.

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't have enough $$ to pick up any AMT merch. :(

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw 'em at Southpaw last year, planning to go to this one too.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

why do these bands all play the same 10 towns?

That CD is available in shops too.

everything, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

But $5 more.

Hiroshi has some long fingers!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

The first time I saw them it was like a mindblowing Amon Duul II / Hawkwind manic space riffing thing but the second time it was more like watching the wanky metal dudes that work at the guitar store do an impromptu jam. I don't remember if there were any lineup differences but it seems like they can be pretty hit or miss.

MON 10/17 ASHEVILLE, NC @ Grey Eagle

what the FUCK

the band isn't actually playing at this venue. they're at some other small bar in Asheville. I just got off the phone with some bitchy woman from the Grey Eagle who was not helpful at all. ugh, get your shit together, tour managers!

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 17 October 2005 03:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Same thing happened in NYC. They were supposed to play the Knitting Factory, and a good friend of mine works there, so I figured I was in like Flynn. But for some reason, it's Knitting Factory 'PRESENTS' AMT, and the show is at the Canal Room. Oh well. It's money well spent, anyway, and I'm pretty excited.

Killa Hill (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Does anybody know for sure that AMT did manage to get into the country by now? I can't get on the phone with the venue they actually are at, and am about to hit the road for a 2 hour drive to this show.

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

At the very least, they do tour over here every chance they get, but you never know which tour could be the last, so.

Acid Mothers Gong at Victoriaville this year...also Keiji Haino/Merzbow, Melvins, Zorn solo... odd-numbered years have had good lineups lately. Wish I could make it this year, but no go.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Rock Hardy: That sounds amazing. Wish I could go, too.

novaheat, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Here's the full lineup: http://fimav.qc.ca/en/2007/programmation/
It would definitely be worth the constant aroma of cow shit for five days this year, but my money is pledged elsewhere.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 9 April 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

YES. April 21st. Asheville, NC. 10 minutes away from the venue.
