he's also a much better singer than Kanye

yeah but as a living human being hes so much less likeable, which is saying something in 2010
― Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 13 May 2010 04:25 (sixteen years ago)
this is probably the first song of his where I haven't found him unlikable (probably because I mostly only find him unlikeable the second he stops rapping). and let's keep this in perspective, we're talking about post-heel turn kanye fucking west here (obv his heel turn was the release of 808s itself, not that silly taylor swift rant). drake needs to work way harder if he wants to catch up.
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 04:30 (sixteen years ago)
his heel turn was the fist quarter of 2009

and by "stops" you mean "starts" right?
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 May 2010 04:47 (sixteen years ago)
yes, thanks for catching that
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 04:58 (sixteen years ago)
drake starts out unlikeable. if i dont like kanye being self righteous, where at least we have a public story to latch onto, why would we care about drake being done rong?? no one will connect with this
― Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 13 May 2010 05:25 (sixteen years ago)
will smith was never this much of a whiny lame
i haven't really caught the lyrics and hence don't care about them yet
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 05:36 (sixteen years ago)
the only thing worse than kanye being self-righteously mad at his ex is drake being self-righteously mad at an imaginary one

this really is otm
― some dude, Thursday, 13 May 2010 12:06 (sixteen years ago)
dunno, personally i find kanye's actual non-issues add up to the same zero at the end of the day. i think it's moreso drake's nominal superiority as a singer that works against him in comparison to kanye on his 808s material - on an immediate level there's a workable grain in kanye's lack of r&b finesse.
conversely this probably acts in his favour 4 those happy to luxuriate in the wan aesthetics of 'shut it down', etc.

SO RONG

Still one of the best albums of the decade.
even if you think that, it's kinda hard to deny that his persona took a turn for the ugly on that album
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)
I mean, even though I don't like 808s, that wasn't a value judgement.
Not sure what you mean by his persona taking a turn for the ugly... was he just whining and being sad a bit much for your tastes?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:07 (sixteen years ago)
I think he means all of the unnecessary shit-talking about his ex.
For me, Kanye gets more entertaining as his behavior becomes more unnecessary, but I understand why others wouldn't feel that way.

― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:11 (sixteen years ago)
It wasn't unnecessary shit-talking about his ex, though. It was, if anything, an honest portrayal of the emotions one often feels after a break-up ("It's your fault," "You're a bitch and a slut," "You're never going to find anyone who will treat you as good as I did," "Fuck you, once again, you slut"), even if these emotions are emotions we're taught not to externalize, especially on pop songs. They might be asshole things to say, but if he really felt them, why shouldn't he include them in his song? I think they added to the sense that 'Ye really was hit hard, and this was the way he reacted. It was a portrait of a really brief period after a break-up before, you know, distance and insight occur (whether that ever did occur for Kanye is another matter).

I don't want to put up with the dude at the bar who wants to tell me about the bitch who did him wrong either!

Hey, if he writes melodies like 'Ye does on 808s, I would happily.

Yes, but he doesn't...

nah this thread hasn't been about Drake since you guys histrionically ran to Kanye's defense
― itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 20:24 (sixteen years ago)
No histrionics on my behalf, good sir!
With that said, I do think the melody on "Find Your Love" is realy lovely, and the way Drake hits the higher note when he sings "heart" in the chorus -- I love it.

i saw a UFC dude come into the ring to a kanye 808s song, that kinda made sense

can't remember the dude, it was on the undercard of the PPV where brock lesner won and then freaked out and did some WWE heel style rant after and got in trouble for shitting on the beer sponser on air

I think they're pretty great; really primal melodies that just smack you across the face. For me, at least.
― rennavate, Friday, 14 May 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)
"primal melodies that just smack you across the face" and "stilted melodies that don't go anywhere" don't really seem like mutually exclusive descriptions, just ones that come with different value judgements.

i never much cared about kanye being a "dick" -- we listen to rap music right? i mean
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:27 (sixteen years ago)
never bothered me but it's pretty clear kanye is a different kind of dick than most other rappers
― samosa gibreel, Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:30 (sixteen years ago)
yeah idk -- i kinda skimmed this thread cuz i'm tired of this discussion anyway so i have nothing to respond to
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:32 (sixteen years ago)
anyway i still dig "find your love"
on 808s, kanye is a dick in the way that the dashboard confessional is a dick. fuck outta here.
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:33 (sixteen years ago)
dashboard confessional dude
i like 808s and heartbreak and i do not like this new drake song
― samosa gibreel, Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:36 (sixteen years ago)
mostly i just think 808s has great music -- the basis of the songs is an afterthought to me anyway because it's emotionally infantile, undercooked & full of platitudes -- again, that doesn't bother me but i see how it could turn others off -- i believe i've said this before but my view of 808s is def colored in a positive way because of how it fits into kanye's career -- it's much more interesting to me as a major pop album -- eventually it hit me on as base a musical level as possible, but there's def a different element to it that i dig
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:58 (sixteen years ago)
tbh tho like, personally i find myself being affected by dudes off-record personas more than their on record -- like, 50 cent being a dick irl kinda made me not want to listen to his music, regardless of what he was saying on record -- i can deal with kanye's "dickishness" (even tho it comes off to me in a rather normal & non-offensive way) because i find him to be a compelling off-record persona/pop star -- i don't judge it based on "he's annoying on this record"
― contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 04:01 (sixteen years ago)
J0rdan ridiculously OTM re: 808s.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 15 May 2010 04:49 (sixteen years ago)
I don't like it musically, though.
― i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 May 2010 06:01 (sixteen years ago)
Fair play, R. I think it's musically really engaging for me, even if I sort of agree with J0rdan on the bit about 'Ye's songwriting. But I think it's strong on the record too, and I've explained why in the past. I just think it's a great record. I like College Dropout and Graduation better, but I like 808s more than Late Registration.
― rennavate, Saturday, 15 May 2010 07:44 (sixteen years ago)
kanye seems like way more of a dick IRL than 50
― itt tech (some dude), Saturday, 15 May 2010 10:15 (sixteen years ago)
thank me later version of "shut it down" -- http://hulkshare.com/vqmrw64rpuf8 -- has a full dream verse apparently, also some other different flourishes
