For what it's worth, my favorite COIL track... (or one of them)

YES!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 8 May 2010 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

well done for knowing who coil are. how long is your penis also

hotel califor.nia (r1o natsume), Saturday, 8 May 2010 05:05 (sixteen years ago)

Can't measure, it stays kinda... you know... coiled up.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 8 May 2010 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

i feel like this new project exists because he is a douchebag egomaniac

What a sad world we would live in without the douchebag egomaniacs making brilliant albums for us!

I really like the new song, and look forward to the EP this Summer.

theskysgoneout (Jason Pitzl-Waters), Saturday, 8 May 2010 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

Alex in NYC, you have very good ears.

I'm now going to hear that milkshake slurping sound forever, aren't I?

StanM, Saturday, 8 May 2010 06:21 (sixteen years ago)

That sound also vaguely reminded me of the weird coin-rattling-in-a-flowerpot-standing-on-a-speaker kind of noise in Peter Gabriel's Lay Your Hands On Me way back when he used to fool around with the first samplers. :-)

StanM, Saturday, 8 May 2010 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

well done for knowing who coil are. how long is your penis also

I'd forgotten how fucking obnoxious ILM was. Thanks.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 8 May 2010 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

Kind of love having a female voice against Trent's music. Sounds a little Portisheady to my ears, maybe?

Maybe the Coil reference will bear out in other tracks? Would like that. Coil love springs eternal!!

Ned: braingrinding corpseporn? Why it's only my favorite genre.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

I knew you did things differently in Australia.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

Gives "bloody oath" a whole new meaning, huh?

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

Watch out, Trent, she's pushing all your buttons!

StanM, Sunday, 9 May 2010 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't heard Coil influence in NIN since or before they remixed him (aside from maybe my favorite dreams are nightmares). I'm a fan of both acts but it does Coil's brilliance a pretty massive injustice to compare them to NIN just b/c Trent's a fan and rips a band name from an early Coil track.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 9 May 2010 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

I'd say HTDA owes more to the Sneaker Pimps than Coil, but whatever.

Wasn't the whole Coil discussion was really just about the name anyway? It wasn't much more than getting wistful abt old Coil songs. I don't think anyone actually did any comparing.

Oh and thanks for noticing the milkshake sound, Alex. Now this song makes me hungry.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 10 May 2010 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe so. Sorry, I was drunk and I can get pretty defensive about 'em. This was the first Coil song I heard and it's probably still in my top 10.

'A Drowning' is really good! Dunno what ilxor's on about. It's got a spaciousness and a scope that disappointingly few NIN songs find.

Sorry for the radio silence lately... I've been busy! There's a number of things to be revealed over the coming months. Some you may expect, others you may not. Patience, my friends.

Today's news is about my band How To Destroy Angels. I'm happy to announce we've formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP. As you may have guessed, it's an EP. It contains six songs, some of which are from our full-length LP which is coming early next year.
We are making some videos, we are going to be performing live, and that's all the details I have for now on those matters.

Regarding our decision to sign with Columbia, we've really spent a long time thinking about things and it makes sense for a lot of reasons, including a chance to work with our old friend Mark Williams. There's a much more granular and rambling answer I could give (and likely will in an interview someplace) but it really comes down to us experimenting and trying new things to see what best serves our needs. Complete independent releasing has its great points but also comes with shortcomings.

We are all very excited about you checking out the new stuff. Wish I could tell you more, but you know how this works... it would take all the fun out of it!

Stay tuned!

Well damn, just did a really enjoyable interview with Mr. Reznor himself. It'll be running in the Quietus in the near future.

good read! have only listened to the EP once so far but it sounded good

some dude, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I like it a lot, good mood music.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

Good piece! His answers suggest there was a lot more material - any plans to run the full transcript on your blog?

誤訳侮辱, Monday, 10 December 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

There's only a couple of things that weren't used, actually; I'll have to go back and review the transcript. Anyway, thanks! I have to say that getting compliments from him for interesting questions was a nice charge.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 December 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

And it turns out the New Yorker has a big piece about him up and there's more about that Beats by Dre thing, borrowing from the Pitchfork summary:

He's helping to design a new music-streaming service, which is currently being called Daisy, and is set to launch early next year.

The service "uses mathematics to offer suggestions to the listener... [but also] would present choices based partly on suggestions made by connoisseurs, making it a platform in which the machine and the human would collide more intimately."

Comparing Daisy to Spotify, he told The New Yorker, "Here's sixteen million licensed pieces of music,’ they’ve said, but you’re not stumbling into anything. What's missing is a service that adds a layer of intelligent curation."

"That first wave of music presentation which felt magical, the one where the songs are chosen by algorithms that know who you listened to... has begun to feel synthetic."

He described Daisy as being "like having your own guy when you go into the record store, who knows what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't necessarily have encountered."

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 December 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

"a platform in which the machine and the human would collide more intimately" is also the premise of the next Fincher movie he's scoring

some dude, Monday, 10 December 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

didn't Beats buy MOG? That was a rumor anyway.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the EP so I'm hesitant to pursue this any further.

I am digging the EP in much the same way I dug the Doubting Thomas album

"Bellini." (DJP), Wednesday, 6 March 2013 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

They've gotten steadily better, it seems to me, but not a whole lot better. The first EP was wan and disappointing; the second EP was slightly less so, with one really great song ("Ice Age"); the full-length repeats "Ice Age" and a few more tracks from the second EP, and is, again, a little better than its predecessors. But none of what HTDA has done to date is as good as, say, The Slip.

誤訳侮辱, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

This is pretty good, even if it is essentially trip hop. Maybe Sneaker Pimps, actually kind of reminds me of a slightly gloomier Garbage.
