We're more than a third of the way through 2010 and we still don't have a thread for our favorite singles/songs/tracks of the year?

Specifically "My Baby Left Me" seems to sing-songy, and it feels like it's all coming too easily to her. Not that things coming easily is necessarily bad, but here there's something about it that makes it a problem, to me. I'm kind of hoping I'll change my mind though, because I'd like to be listening to her voice. Maybe the song will sound different in the context of a whole album.

Also, I think that Jowell & Randy track would be of interest to general "dance music" fans, though maybe you have to be a little familiar with pop bachata beats to understand what's so distinctive about the way they take off from that.

Was going to say Rox's "My Baby Left Me," but I'm already kind of sick of it.

Something about the big budget album version is RONG. Can't put my finger on it. The demo that (I) floated around (via Fluxblog) in 2008 is greatly superior.

3) dj quik ft. suga free - nobody

yall are way overrating this, & im a fan

^^^^^^^

It's a fine Quik song but really nothing that stands out in his catalog.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 6 May 2010 13:06 (fourteen years ago) link

well that's one way of thinking about, i just thought "WOW THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS I'VE HEARD ALL YEAR" and wrote it down in a list and posted it on ilx. ordering on my list was really just an excuse to put yahzarah at number one anyways tbh, but if we're gonna get into dj quik's discography i like 'nobody' as much as my favourite songs off blaqkout.

would i be a total shit in saying that there's very little appearing above that i'm thinking "i must really check that out"? i can't think of much coming out in 2010 that i'm particularly looking forward to either :-( 2010 and all its portent seems to be largely retreading last year's territory what with all the gagas and dj quiks etc... that might be me being very myopic though. haven't had the internet in a while due to house moves etc.

ntac, but I linked to the wrong J. Alvarez song. I had meant to list this bachaton (w/ Jowell & Randy):

(That other track is just okay.)

lol @ the idea that *last year* was when u should start paying attention to dj quik

& you might like it as much as the blaqkout stuff, samosa, but it sounds a lot like his pre-blaqkout shit -- bq was good cuz he was really stretching out on it, but it still sounded fun/funky/party-ready. 'nobody' is dece but not exactly blowing my mind or anything. if you like it, check the 1st two suga free albums, 'rhythmalism' & the two lp's after that

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Friday, 7 May 2010 02:37 (fourteen years ago) link

ya i mean, my point was basically that i enjoy the song as a dude who's oblivious to the narrative of dj quik and suga free's respective careers, just a dope hip hop song to me. obviously ever since listening to blaqkout i've been meaning to check out his previous stuff though, suga free now added to list as well.

ayo for dyao (samosa gibreel), Friday, 7 May 2010 02:43 (fourteen years ago) link

it doesn't really sound like his work from that era tho (even if it's quite obv the work of the same guy), much more brashly synthetic

moderator requiem forum (The Reverend), Friday, 7 May 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont think thats really the case -- hes def used synth keybs like that before -- and even if it is the effect isnt particularly surprising or notable. compared to quik classics like 'buck bounce' or 'up n da club' its pretty standard album track type generic funk jam

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Friday, 7 May 2010 03:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess it's technically a December 2009 single, but out of things that haven't been mentioned I've definitely been playing Luda's "How Low" the most this year.

Ought to add these tunes to my list, I'm playing the hell out of them. Agree that "Kaili" is one of the high points of the Caribou album.

Forgot Class Actress's "Let Me Take You Out". "Adolescent Heart" has the most amazing neo-Nena buildup in the verse before the bottom completely falls out of the chorus. If they had just repeated that chord progression!

how does referring to people who had great or notable records in 2009 as "last year's territory" imply that that was also the time to start paying attention to said artists? i mean one was a newer artist, one wasn't, but you pretty much read something into it that wasn't there is all.

some dude, Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:14 (fourteen years ago) link

"how does referring to people who had great or notable records in 2009 as "last year's territory" imply that that was also the time to start paying attention to said artists?"

cant believe yr asking this but

1. dl implies that talking about quik sounds like last year retread
2. quik has had a career for so long that implying that we should associate quik with '09 makes no sense unless
3. you think quik just showed up as a worthwhile artist in 2009

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

this was the logic for my tossed off comment, which isnt exactly particularly nuanced but makes sense dude, jeez

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link

he was just saying he wants to be excited about 2010 records by people that didn't just drop records he liked in 2009. he used 2 random examples, and since one of them was on the master list of a dozen or so rappers that any mention of on ilx causes you to show up and hulk out, here we are.

some dude, Saturday, 8 May 2010 01:26 (fourteen years ago) link

'hulk out' really

Wow! This year has been a real corker for singles! Several fantastic labels have taken to sort of specializing in ye olde vinyl 7" joints, and the result has been tres groovy. Smith Westerns, El Jesus de Magico, Dum Dum Girls, Melted Sunglasses, Girls at Dawn, Broken Water, Blank Dogs, Woven Bones, Haunted George - all kinds of terrific stuff from all over the musical map. If yr interested try Google. I don't recall all the titles.
