seems like i should have an opinion on this but

plax (ico), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

recently a guy i know's been at the center of a 'gay rapper' controversy -- basically he's been on the local battle rap circuit for a few years, has a slight lisp and has been dressing more loud/hipsterish lately, decided to respond to gay rumors by spitting some o_O innuendo at a battle to throw an opponent off his game. then when video of the battle got online, it ended up all over worldstarhiphop, thisis50 as 'the gay battle rapper'. he says he's straight so i dunno how he's dealing with all this but it's pretty nuts.

it ain't hard to tell, I'm a viking, then prevail (some dude), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

well, hey, free publicity can't exactly be all bad for someone trying to break into the music industry

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

Mister Cee got caught getting head from a dude in public. Twitter homophobia ensues.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't Missy Elliot rumoured to be gay? And she co-wrote Oops, Oh My with/for Tweet, which seemed like it could be a lesbian fantasy that just stopped short of explicitly coming out.

stooping as low to include electronic blips and bloops (superflyguy), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 13:31 (fifteen years ago)

Missy rumors seem kind of irrelevant now that the biggest female rapper in like 10 years is openly bisexual

Turn My Slag On (some dude), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

Not one mention on this thread of Soce the Elemental Wizard?

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

During his performances, he typically dons a wizard’s cap.[1]

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

^^I think that might be all the explanation needed.

Yeah, without trying to turn this into a thing about race, I always forget just how homophobic large portions of the African-American community are.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, yeah, plenty of homophobes of all races, but there is an ingrained cultural thing in the African-American community that rears its head when stuff like this happens.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

communities that feel threatened demographically are usually pretty homophobic and anti-abortion. it's like a self-preservation/MUST PROCREATE AT ALL COSTS kind of thinking

in my world of loose geirs (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

(and yeah duh obviously not unique to black community)

Do you ever just lay off dude? I'm sorry, I'll try to talk to my friend who teaches minority studies to provide me with specific references I can cite next time.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

if you dont want this to be a thing about race, dont bring race up!

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

the mr. cee story is straight SVU

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:51 (fifteen years ago)

maybe we can somehow merge this really fruitful discussion with sarahel's investigation into the downlow community?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

maybe we could just drop it for a change?

fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

jeezo anyway i just thought it was sad to see all these hip hop fans on twitter making #mrcee jokes and basically shitting on the poor dude.

Bleeqwot the Chef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ otm

Sorry guys, I'll drop it and, yeah, I guess I shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place. But to try and pretend that race has absolutely nothing to do with homophobia in hip-hop is on some pretty huge blinders on shit. Not that this is the right place to hold such a discussion, but, still.

assumed this was a platonic troll post tbh

caek, Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry guys, I'll drop it

This is all you need to have said.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

WTF. Its a legitimate issue that ties in directly to what this thread is all about!

smh

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, without trying to turn this into a thing about race you are probably right.

caek, Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

You guys are so fucking infuriating sometimes.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

you are trying really hard not to turn this into a thing about race! and i appreciate that

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

without trying to turn this into a thing about jon /via/ chi 2.0 freaking out all the time, i hope jon /via/ chi 2.0 chills out itt

ℯℳℴ ❤\(◕~◕✿ (some dude), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just confused is all. Iirc, nothing I said was offensive or inflammatory.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

yes it was actually

I don't really know what is more infuriating:

- watching the social construct of hip-hop culture equated with the larger social construct of the African-American community
- watching a social attitude within that community get linked especially to both that social construct and that genetic group, even though it also exists in most every (if not every, no qualifiers) other ethnic social construct in the country
- as a member of that community, getting relegated to invisible man status by the asshole making pronouncements about me

fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

like, there are plenty of ways to talk about homophobia in hip-hop without making a "not to be all about race, but it bums me out that this is what black people do" comment that even five seconds of thought could have led you to
