Bogart Puff 'n Stuff (Cattle Grind), Saturday, 24 April 2010 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

idk but if diabolic has replaced them that's better value for money imo - diabolic are a great band and I'm sorry I missed them

I was happy that George Fisher didn't follow suit of like EVERY DEATH METUHL FRONTMAN EVAR and thank the audience for not being trend-following sheep that support that "flavor of the month" crap......

Yeah, 1349 got volcano-ized and will apparently be joining the tour a few dates in.

I really liked them live....frontman has a lot of charisma. and their sound is definitely up my alley.

Cool clip! It's neat when she does the wah-wah bit with the hurdy-gurdy on "Grey Sublime Archon".

Glenn, Manowar and Amon Amarth aren't metal?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

new Decibel is on newsstands -- just grabbed a copy. unfortunately, the record store did not have last year's Converge, so i got Caribou -- a decidedly not metal record

ksh, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

so uh i was super-psyched to buy the new cathedral today, annnnnd.....the first disc is fucked. i only got it to play once in the car (wouldn't even cue on 5 other tries) and there was some fucked up digital noise on every track. disc 2 is fine, and really enjoyable. should i just return/get another copy? scared that one will be damaged too.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 01:41 (sixteen years ago)

yeah return it

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

Return it. The copy I bought is fine.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

pfunkboy, I think you meant that comment for the Listening Club thread. Where I was joking...

just got around to the new overkill. it RULES.

original bgm, Thursday, 29 April 2010 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously Pitchfork, do you just hate giving metal that much attention? A very deserved 8.4 for the new Alcest, but still won't give it the 'Best New Music' tag.

I guess the better question is, why do I keep visiting that site?

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 29 April 2010 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

they obviously dont think their readership will be interested in metal.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

I guess it just irks me because a lot of bands get a boost from getting the BNM tag anymore, and I'd certainly love to see Alcest get the boost in attention (and just maybe income) instead of another boring hipster band.

countdown to the 1st alcest are a hipster band post ..

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

Hahaha yeah, I figured I would just run with that risk.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 29 April 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

Who chooses what gets the BNM tag? I assume it's not the reviewer, so blame the moron who gets to choose.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

I'm assuming its an editorial thing. I know its a stupid thing to care about in the least.

Pitchfork has a metal column right? Maybe they should have a Best New Metal tag ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

maybe we can have a poll over how Pitchfork should tag new metal releases

brad whitford's impotent rage (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

I figured I'd get my pointless bitching out of the way in this thread, no point starting a whole new thread over it.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah because it would just become yet another pitchfork thread where they discuss the usual shit and ignore your post

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

Like I said, its kind of a stupid thing to care about, but I was talking to a dude at my local store and he was telling me that he pretty much has to automatically double the orders for any album Pitchfork BNM'd album.

Pitchfork has a metal column right?

More like HAD a metal column. The last edition of Show No Mercy was almost a year ago.

Pardon my redundancy above.

I never read pitchfork unless a review is linked to from ilm. I dont even know what bands they give a best BNM tag to, but Im not surprised they wont give it to a metal band.

but I was talking to a dude at my local store and he was telling me that he pretty much has to automatically double the orders for any album Pitchfork BNM'd album.

Now I didn't realise a BNM tag was such a big deal. I can see why its sought after then.

I remember way back in the early - mids 90s (before britpop really)if an album got 5 K's in Kerrang or a 9/10 in NME, Our Price in Hamilton would get loads of ppl asking for said album (including myself haha). Half the time they didn't have it and would need to order it in. I think I bought the 1st Marilyn Manson because of a glowing Kerrang review Plus trent reznor had produced it. I probably discovered Dirt by AiC that way too tbf.

So i suppose a BNM tag could help pitchfork readers get out of their comfort genres and check stuff out. Did Boris or Mastodon ever get a BNM tag?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

shows how often I've read it then macdara if they dont even have the column now.
http://thequietus.com/ is good for metal reviews. Even if doran is upset with me for posting on that ilm thread that Kerrang sucks..

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

The former P4k metal writer moved his shop to Stereogum.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

How could a metal band break the mainstream nowadays? Could it get played on commercial top 40 radio without it being a ballad? Does MTV even play music vids now? Is the only way to do it to crossover to pitchfork readers ?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

TBH I thought the last Alcest album was way more Pitchfork friendly than this one, and also a lot better. These things aren't necessarily related.

BUT I am going to see Bolt Thrower & Rotting Christ in 2 days so maybe I'm still metal enough, I dunno.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 29 April 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

I'm skipping the Dublin Bolt Thrower show this Sunday - they moved the start time back by 2 hours so it won't end till 1am. On a Sunday night! I'm not metal enough for that, I've got work in the morning.
