I'm listening to the JX mix, now and OMG, it's JC Chasez without the guitar and shouty vocals!

PS, Ro, where's yer blog? Always forget.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

If not Daniel Miller... is Si Begg a possibility? Published/released by Mute, London-based (I think)...

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard D. James, obv.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 4 October 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

from the horse's mouth: not ewan pearson

stelfox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe Jake Williams?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Prodigy remix (radio rip).

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow he's everywhere! This has been a very fast progression from Kompakt-sponsored obscurity to sudden ubiquity. I wonder if he'll grow too big for Kompakt.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Why oh why are there no good-quality MP3s of the Heartbeats remix yet? The one doing the rounds is frustratingly quiet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My 128 kbps version is pretty good on the volume.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Prodigy mix, by the way. It keeps all the good bits of the original and removes the parts that didn't work so well. The beats, principally - Girls sounds so much better with a big 4/4 electro beat behind it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Just buy it, you cheapskate, Matt. It's first week release cheap.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! I didn't even know it was out.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi. I'm being quite slow I think, but this mis-labelling thing has confused me. Just to be clear:

I Look Into Mid Air = swirly synths and vocals, sometimes labelled Frequency

Frequency = Evil helicopter bass (I realise this is the tune I was trying to identify from Erol's set at Glastonbury this year - joy!), sometimes labelled Prototype

Prototype = ???

are Frequency and Prototype the same tune? 100s of ppl on Slsk seem to think so!

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete both "Prototype" and "Frequency" have evil helicopter bass (or at least both could - the description kinda potentially fits both) but they're different tunes.

"Prototype" starts off [evil bass fart]/[crash]/[evil bass fart]/crash before building into a multilayered electro tune, whereas as I recall (only heard it in store so far, picking it up Monday) "Frequency" just launches straight into electo-rave intensity.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

truly he is the new Vitalic!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just thinking that steve!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ah thanks Tim I think I've sorted it out now - yr notation is v.accurate :) Prototype was the one played at Glastonbury. It's all good.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

So Prototype the one that starts off with a 4/4 kick drum, with bwaaarp noises and Kraftwerk 'Robots' bass before this big French house type melody comes in. It almost sounds like it could've been on Surrender by the Chems. I *think* Tim and I are talking about the same thing here.

We Live In Daddy's Car is the slightly softer sounding one with an electro bassline stuttering glitch noises and Orbitalesque multilayered tinkling that gets more complex as the tune progresses, right?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds right Matt.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah you're right Matt. OTM with the Surrender comparison - something about the playfulness of it all really reminds me of that album.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

hugh grant

stomp (+dancefloor), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

This would never happen if Kompakt et al wouldn't be so ambiguous in labelling their vinyl. You always have to guess what is on each side, or look for the small etching in the middle.

Take the Speicher split with Voigt & Voigt that had Vision 04 and Was Du Willst on it. Now, Vision 03 was a 10 minute epic, so you assume that the 10 minute epic labelled Was Du Willst must actually be Vision 04. BUT NO.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the Kompakt mp3s are always mislabelled - "amabile" and "privat", "x" and "masterblaster", "mauglen" and "punto pilota" etc. It makes for some interesting reactions on first plays.

Which is weird because the small etchings are fairly obvious I think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Look Into Mid-Air" is the one with the vocal that goes "I look into mid-air".

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that sounds like something Moby would say

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

turns out my "frequency" is "mid air". i was mishearing the vocal hook as "i look into his eyes". and i'm still not 100% sure about my prototype. and now i'm worried that there's a bunch of michael mayer tracks that i thought i'd heard that i haven't.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

we should give track times or something in cases like these.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

We Live In Daddy's Car is the only weak link, IMO.

My Dinner With Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam check out the remix of Client's "Radio", which is like a better version of same.

Ha ha a lot of the synths on the excellent Ewan Pearson mix of "Enjoy the Silence" seem to be saying "Rex the Dog, step off!", although obv Pearson's mix is v polite and respectful - esp compared to the ace mayhem of the Rex dub of "Photographic". Mind you I've only heard the edit of the Pearson mix so maybe the extended mix is more insane.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

More evidence in support of JX: the chorus of "There's Nothing I Won't Do" fits perfectly over the top of his mix of "Heartbeats" - try it yourself.

Seriously track down the "Photographic" (Depeche Mode) mix, it is unspeakably huge.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I played the Heartbeats mix last night, the club was full of office twats and they all danced.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 October 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OH OH OH F***ING HELL THAT PRODIGY REMIX
(What's that 80s groove synth riff sampled from? I keep thinking of Vicky D "This Beat Is Mine"...?)

Heartbeats remix.
60 second sample MP3s:
Prototyp
Frequency; I Look Into Mid Air

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard two fantastic Depeche Mode remixes this week - the Rex one and a Black Strobe mix of Something To Do, and they're both absolutely massive.

All house producers should be required by law to do at least one gigantic maximalist electro Depeche Mode remix. It would make the world a much better place.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think 'We Live In Daddy's Car' is the better track on the 12. Protype is fine 'n' all - it reminds me of Commodore-64 god Rob Hubbard's "Sanxion" loading-theme and has a nice atmosphere, but the vocal glitchyness and super-flat 303esque bass give 'car' the greater momentum, plus it's a much better track for dancing to.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

On the Frequency/Mid Air confusion: the 12" is about as unambiguous as Kompakt vinyl gets. Not only is the title sampled all over ILIMA, the label on that side of the record is a picture of a dog looking into mid air!

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

can i come round and sniff thru your vinyl collection sometime Ricardo?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, it's not v exciting Mr M. About 75% of it is indie stuff from the nineties and the rest is hardly earth shattering. I have historically been a bit shit about buying dance stuff, the initial enthusiastic Kompakt overindulgence notwithstanding.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Take the Speicher split with Voigt & Voigt that had Vision 04 and Was Du Willst on it. Now, Vision 03 was a 10 minute epic, so you assume that the 10 minute epic labelled Was Du Willst must actually be Vision 04. BUT NO. "

I should've stuck with my assumption (see the Kompakt thread for more mislabelling woes).

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

after listening to the "girls" remix (and "I look into mid air"), I can't really blame anyone for thinking he was tom middleton. They remind me a lot of the jedi knigths, only with more...balls

randy mamola, Saturday, 16 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

latest hilarious rumour is that rex the dog is actually mark moore aka s'express. which might make sense of the mute connection (rhythm king label etc..) i sincerely hope this is true.

jwd, Sunday, 17 October 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

took me a while to come round, but that prodigy mix has finally sold me on rex.

Mil (Mil), Sunday, 17 October 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The 'Heartbeats' remix is the best of the bunch so far. So lovely.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh ! http://www.rexthedog.net the clips don't seem to work though

Pud McPud, Monday, 18 October 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"A guy in a magazine said this remix is disappointing and 'too much like Jan Hammer'. We do not understand this, to sound like Jan Hammer can only be a positive ?"

I love her/him/them.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The clips work for me. The grammar seems a bit awkward which made me suspect that maybe Rex the Dog is German after all but maybe it's a faux-naif Kompakt-aping thing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The overly juvenille nature almost reminds of a prank Aphex Twin would pull.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm - the summaries seem kind of phoney; a bit crass if this guy's English, I gotta say.

Which made me think - is Rex the Dog named after Inspector Rex? You know, that laughable Austrian detective drama starring a crime fighting dog? I'm sure that show is a huge export from Europe, and for most English speaking people is the only experience of Germanic television. There's actually been a few running jokes with my friends about Kommisar Rex, while German/Austrian mates remain horrified that it's actually broadcast here in Australia.

Again, this makes me think it's kind of a pisstake - not the music, so much as how it's presented as a 'Kompakt' release.

mdieter, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the summaries seem kind of phoney; a bit crass if this guy's English, I gotta say.

The English is obviously a pisstake...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe the person who said Rex The Dog is Mark Moore is correct.
