"Private Eyes" rocketh the land.

That is all.

Strange, tho, that "Ultimate..." doesn't have their Temptations collaborations. "My Girl" was a sizable hit, wasn't it?

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 10:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I see no reason why these guys should be "indefensible" in any way. A great act. Their version of "Everytime You Go Away" is better vocally and melodically than Paul Young's (which admittedly has a better instrumental arrangement)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 10:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Despite the glowing things I said about them above, I should note that I don't totally love "Private Eyes" and "Kiss On My List" and "You Make My Dreams", compared to lots of their other hits. Is that weird? They're okay, but they just seem by-the-numbers to me, somehow. I actually think "Adult Education" and "Say It Isn't So" and especially "Out of Touch" (which is *great*), all from a year or two later, are a lot better. (But after "Out of Touch," I can't think of any I care about. "Method of Modern Love" and "Everything Your Heart Desires" went top 10, so they must have had hooks, but I'll be damned if I can remember what those hooks sounded like.)

Do you remember "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid"? (All though Big Bad Boom hits kinda define ninth grade radio listening for me.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 13:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I wrote once that, New Order excepted, H&O absorbed Arthur Baker's dance tricks with greater fluency (and, needless to say, commerical potency) than any other act. "Say It Isn't So" and "Method of Modern Love" are marvelous for this reason. And the 12" of "Out of Touch" includes Big Bam Boom's "Dance on Your Knees" as an (extended) prologue; it rocks like a beast.

I like "Some Things.." a lot too.

OK, if the Hall-Lynne pairing worked, what about Sacred Songs, Hall's collab w/Robert Fripp, which I've never heard and have always been fairly curious about? (I'm guessing it's Worth Hearing Once, Maybe Twice. Which is fine, actually.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 14:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Matos, go here: daryl hall - sacred songs

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I like it, Mr. M; definitely give it a whirl.

Okay, who else has seen this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000066749/104-7754010-9820766?v=glance&n=130 .

I got it from the public library yesterday, and I must say: they are so cool it hurts. "Say It Isn't So," "Maneater" and "I Can't Go for That" are especially good, particularly for early MTV.

However, the videos for "Maneater" and "Family Man" made me think of this thread: ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=1289994 . I think that the answer might be that they are both meatheads AND towers of strength.

Niiiiiiiice.

"Adult Education" might be the best/worst video ever made, ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s22ufU-67iM&search=hall%20oates%20adult%20education

(Wasn't sure if I should post a YouTube thingy in here - is there some kind of ILX rule against that?)

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

youtube is perfectly fine. it's ysi/rapidshare/zshare etc that is not.

Well, then!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Weird. I put a YouTube link (i.e. where the screen should pop up) in here, but it doesn't show.

ditto on "private eyes"
that track is FIRE

John Oates amiably confessed in their "Behind the Music" segment that he and Daryl Hall made, "without exception," the worst videos of all time.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Their absolute worst video -- "Jingle Bell Rock." The look of 'delighted surprise' on Oates's face at one point might be the single worst acting job by anyone in the history of creation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

love the "Private Eyes" video, with the bug-eyed John peering out from behind Daryl's shoulders, in sync with the handclaps...

Uh wha?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:58 (seventeen years ago) link

"You Make My Dreams Come True" is such a fantastic song. I just listened to that one yesterday and it was totally killing me- the "rock" breakdown part is so tuff.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The only way to unite ILM titans is to lock them in a karaoke room with H&O tunes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:01 (seventeen years ago) link

As the biggest H&O fan on ILM, I get to play Simon Cowell for the karaoke, then. (The superspecial encore will be me taking on "Your Imagination.")

I actually kinda like the one for I Can't Go for That. The rest of them make me laugh.

My favorite part is in Say It Isn't So, when a swirling light makes Darryl Hall's face look like a totally fucked mask. That or the really, really long table.

deej, Monday, 28 May 2007 02:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks for reviving this Alfred, cause I would have done it myself pretty soon (or maybe that other thread that asks for a reevaluation of H&O). I honestly don't know why I've found myself so fascinated with these guys right now. I mean, throughout the 80's I didn't dislike them, but they were just kindof...there. I only bought like maybe three of their singles, tops.

I listened to the War Babies album earlier tonight but I only really like the first half. It just gets to heavy and proggy and concepty after awhile, stretches my patience. But that is probably Todd Rundgren's problem rather than theirs.

I heard "Family Man" for the first time since it came out tonight and I swear to god, I do not remember that song at all even though I know I heard it when it was a hit. It's so weird.

So I am going to seek out some of their 80's albums cause I really do want to hear more. And you were right, Alfred about those tracks you recommended from H20, they were quite nice.

Bimble, Monday, 28 May 2007 08:00 (sixteen years ago) link

In the case of "Family Man" I like Mike Oldfield's original version better. Hall & Oates had several great songs anyway though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 May 2007 10:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh so it's a cover then, that rather helps me. Thanks.

how's the live show these days? they're playing at palace of fine arts in sf, but the photo on the ad shows them in "acoustic sunrise" mode. worth it?

I do - I especially like their canteen debrief with Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart - 'I mean, they, they can't even afford a new pair of shades...'.

one year passes...

Thanks to my wonderful friend who encouraged me to buy the new issue of Mojo (god where would I have been without him? I really needed the new issue of Mojo, just the shot in the arm I needed) I learned that Hall & Oates have a new live album out with some DVD accompaniment. Well I sortof stared at the review for awhile before I realized "wait a minute! LA live at the Troubadour! That's where I saw them last year! Holy shit!" I paid a buttload of money to go to that gig, too. Glad it's a live album now.

great album tracks on H2O.. "Crime Pays" "Guessing Games" and "Delayed Reaction" especially.

Alex in NYC OTM. It's been really interesting watching them recover their reputation over the last few years, but it's entirely deserved

Billy Pilgrim, Sunday, 14 June 2009 16:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I started picking up H&O here and there a few years ago, and used to describe it as a guilty pleasure. Now it's like, "If you don't get what's good about H&O, you don't know what th' heck you're talking about."

Brundlefly (kenan), Sunday, 14 June 2009 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I saw H&O open for Lou Reed at the Felt Forum in NYC in 75? Can't say they left much of an impression.
I was only 14. Anyone else there?

guammls (QE II), Sunday, 14 June 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

The case against Hall and Oates has to be related to their 80s ubiquity. I never lived through any of that and as I discovered their albums in my parents collection was completely psyched by all the great pop music I discovered full of awesome hooks, great singing and some killer synth sounds.

filthy dylan, Sunday, 14 June 2009 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Really solid soul songwriting, too. Complete working knowledge of Philly and Memphis, it would seem.

Brundlefly (kenan), Sunday, 14 June 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I was around during their eighties ubiquity, and since I didn't have MTV I had to rely on the radio, and they fit in nicely with Duran Duran, Bonnie Tyler, Prince, and everyone else.

My mom used to have the Voices album on cassette and occasionally blasted it in the car. At the time that album epitomized embarrassing music only your mom would want to play with the windows down - seemingly just to embarrass you. Didn't take me too long to realize that it was just another case of my mom having better taste than I ever would.

Cunga, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:47 (fourteen years ago) link

"Big Kids"!

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Damn, from everything I know about my mom's music tastes she's like the Boomer-era female voice of the "Losing My Edge" narrator.

"I remember being friends with everyone in Love and digging Forever Changes...when I was 14."

"I was there when Randy Newman sold albums out of the trunk of his car, and we all thought he was this funny Jewish piano man..."

"I remember when Hall and Oates were uncool for awhile, and I still flew their flag."

Cunga, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I never thought Hall and Oates were uncool. It depends on what your reference point is. If all you listened to were headbanger records, I guess so.
