the bit about maurice f killing labels is just a joke though - obviously the problems w/ discfunction is quite a bit different than the problem w/ tigersushi

i am sure maurice + idjuts are still on great terms but that label was a good five years before its time

fitting he did this almost exactly on the day of release of the Rapture record.....for so many reasons. my tongue bleeds from biting it so hard.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 14 September 2006 03:22 (eighteen years ago) link

but i thought he only put out HOJL on output?

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 14 September 2006 03:34 (eighteen years ago) link

in some interview when asked about the Mu diss record, Jackson says "[Tiger Sushi] treated Mu badly".

I'm pretty curious now, wasn't really aware of all that. Did they really fuck them over, or just inept, or missed communications?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 14 September 2006 04:27 (eighteen years ago) link

he released many many 12" singles off of Echoes, many remixes (black strobe, ewan pearson, maurice fulton, Manhead, Playgroup, Tiefschwarz etc etc) and he released the full length Echoes vinyl for the Rapture. He also designed the sleeve for Echoes.

two weeks pass...
following this thread, i saw the DK7 promo album looking all unloved in a bin. love the late night dark electro pop aspect of it.
its not as good as circlesquare which i am still totally in awe of, but a few listens and it could be a close call.

i'm biting my tongue even harder than galkin was on sept. 14th.

someone's gotta tell story some time, dammit, and i'm not holding my breath for that maurice fulton autobiography.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

you can always tell me off-list, I'll send you some promo CDs or something in exchange.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Then Dan can bring it back on-list and all will be fine.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:05 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe some anonymous wag will come on thread and tell all!!

~tries desperately to think of any contacts in the Book that may be able to shed light on all this mystery ..

but fails miserably

grrr.

oh hang on ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:08 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe a mod could make this thread unsearchable on google? TIGERGATE!

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

or maybe we could just start making up falsehoods about it so that the truth is lost somewhere in a sordid pack of lies.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Why, that suggestion is absolutely disgraceful. Shame on you. And on that note: I heard Joakim can't achieve orgasm unless he strangles a dog!

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I hear he eats tigers...without even cooking them!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

it's not really a big deal and as the tigersushi people are good folks and don't deserve a bad reputation and the rumouts are probably harming their them, i'll spill it (as far as i know it).

when they started the label they were totally inexperienced at running a label. the guy who handled the business side had a somewhat abrasive personality, was very difficult to work with and was not 100% on the case. i personally had several raging screaming matches down the phone with him, but we remain on civil terms to this day. from what i can gather, maurice felt he had been totally disrespectful to him and decided he couldn't work with them any more. i also don't think tigersushi had the cash flow to pay them right away. the long and the short of it was there was a very, very, very bad scene, hence the 'tigerbastard' song.

abrasive french guy has subsequently left tigersushi and the label is slowly getting it together with joakim and his brother handling everything. i definitely intend to work with them again as i know their aims are true. if i ever run into MU, i make a point of avoiding the subject.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

should read rumours are probably harming them

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:38 (eighteen years ago) link

acknowledging that there was somebody causing problems who's no longer involved should do them well, rumor wise.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

while i could certianly see how mu would find that annoying/infuriating/something, it's relieving to find out that the incident was seemingly relatively minor, and that someone who's worked with them prior is looking forward to working with them again.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

isn't music what matters most in the end?
i feel like what happens between all these people is their business, and makes a poor subject for a thread.
i'd rather hear if someone knew of a new MU or Playgroup album, anybody heard anything?
what are all these people up to?

max pask (max pask), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 18:02 (eighteen years ago) link

never heard of em.

x post.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 18:25 (eighteen years ago) link

This would probably be a bad time to ask when the vinyl version of How to Kill the DJ is getting released, wouldn't it?

researching ur life (grady), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:51 (eighteen years ago) link

from the pain of the record label collapse comes the joy for cheapskates like me.

fopp are selling off the back cat cds for £3 each :

colder (cd/dvd, dead combo, mu, circlesquare, dempsey, black strobe ep, and channel 3

oh, and the playgroup reissue double cd with remixes.

lovely.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:45 (eighteen years ago) link

It's October.

researching ur life (grady), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I really was hoping that joakim was the 'tigerbastard' and that he would return fire on disc at some point. bring on the disco not disco beef!

H2-H4 (H2-H4), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:20 (eighteen years ago) link

damn.

final tracks in crappy 128 kbps format.

peter coyle/lotus eaters track is very nice i must say ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 12 October 2006 06:50 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah i liked that one and the How to cure dyslexia track but on the whole the tracks just made me feel like output RIP was no great loss, which is sad. the Mauin tracks were particularly bad.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 12 October 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

eleven months pass...

rumours abound that Output is back.
anyone know more ?

mark e, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a compilation coming out in October called I Hate Music, a Jackson-curated 2xCD+DVD "best of," but I haven't heard of anything past that...

Telephone thing, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

supposedly someone has picked up the back cat, and will be reissuing it.
oh, and there is also the Kings of Electro set that Trev has sorted out with Alter Ego on BBE, but thats not really Output related so doesn't provide any real insight into the Output story

mark e, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Fantastic news if true- I've been driving myself crazy trying to find a replacement for the copy of Afro Finger & Gel I lost.

Telephone thing, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Word from distro here is he's bringing his label back to life with new releases scheduled etc.

blunt, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy shit, even better!

Telephone thing, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

that Mu record was on tigersushi

unless Output licensed it or something

dmr, Friday, 14 September 2007 17:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Output released it in the UK, and for a while it was the only version in print. If it's ever coming back into print, Output is the most likely candidate, given how their relationship with Tigersushi ended up.

Telephone thing, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:07 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, and there is also the Kings of Electro set that Trev has sorted out with Alter Ego on BBE

three weeks pass...

output is indeed back.
as far as i know, trevor not involved this time around though
first release is a compilation :
http://www.outputrecordings.com/opr100.php
a few remixes are out there - i'm seriously loving the remix by Optimo of To The Music by Colder.

mark e, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

You sure it's not just a posthumous roundup type thing? Pretty good listen for the most part but I've not seen anything saying they're back for good

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

(other than mutterings above)

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

yup, they're just back for some reissues. no trevor involvement whatsoever.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 14:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i stand corrected. a reissue campaign type of thing it is then.

mark e, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

two years pass...

well, the reissue thing never really happened did it.

the people behind the process label (the current Output catalogue owners) tried to run with it, the excellent rebotini (ie. black strobe) release would have been a perfect fit for Output, as well as the pretty fine Toob album, but i lost interest after those.
