what is the most masculine genre of music?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 14:18 (sixteen years ago)
ok in the cold bright not quite as drunk as i was last night light of day, i was maybe a bit too harsh re:HOF upthread, but it def was a disappointment not to hear much of anything off the new album. i also have a mongo hatred for the save the new shit for the third encore ploy, which i assumed was what happened. idk tho, because the dude who i convinced to go to the show by getting him into the new album was getting super irritable so we left towards the end of the main set.
― HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:25 (sixteen years ago)
Usually when an albums only out for a few weeks people complain there's too much new stuff and want older material they're more familiar with.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:27 (sixteen years ago)
I don't say this super-often: Herman otm!
― Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:29 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, but I just listed the Snakes again, that shit fucking rocks. Id be bummed if it didnt get a big air at a concert i went to. Hell, its short enought to play the whole thing.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
Guys I have tried with Blessed Black Wings like a half-dozen times but, though I really like its sound and style, it just never sticks to my ribs, never draws me back for more listens. Is the new one likely to turn me?
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
BBW snared me halfway through the first song, I must have listened to that twice a day for a month when it first came out. The new one is different, a little faster tempo most of the way through, but i dont really have the writer chops to describe it.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)
the only way it's gonna be a big deal that there are women in Ludicra, is if writers make a big deal out of it.
― richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:14 (sixteen years ago)
hey guys i'm thinking about stopping by the record store today, and have bought almost no metal so far this year (just new arsis and new hof). what's one thing i should get? if you want to sell me on it in a sentence or two that would be awesome.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:19 (sixteen years ago)
Ludicra
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:23 (sixteen years ago)
If the new Cathedral is there BUY IT. Everything ppl are saying upthread about it is true.
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:24 (sixteen years ago)
I just don't get the Cathedral love. I'll keep trying..
― richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)
The Triptykon album is out.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)
xpost I wasn't crazy about the Cathedral I'd heard before, but the new thing is just an undeniable conquering force.
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:29 (sixteen years ago)
^^^^
album of the year
― Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:36 (sixteen years ago)
I love the new Abscess, like, a lot a lot, so there's that, too
― Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)
ok guys; i hope they have it!
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)
Cathedral should be out if you're in the UK; US release is April 20.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)
I like the new Cathedral a bunch. It makes me giggle a bit without being ~wacky~ and some of the riffs are all-timers
There should be a name for the thing they do on the last song on the album, where they incorporate all their old album titles into the lyrics
― artfuckoleuthic (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)
oh n/m; it will not be out
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
You need to download it and write an IOU to remind yourself to pick it up. I have it pre-ordered at my local shop but couldn't wait after all the effusive praise.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)
i'll remember---i try to download in advance as little as possible.

i'm in the minority on ilm, they bore the hell out of me. i tried with every album. i really liked the first ten seconds or whatever of blessed black wings. that drum intro. i never liked anything by them more than that. so, i've kinda given up. watched the video for the new song off of the new album and hit the snooze button. hey, ten seconds of pleasure is better than nothing, i guess.
― scott seward, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)
xpost re cathedral-- It's one of those 'I can't believe what I'm hearing right now' albums. Are there any other Cathedral records that sound much like this? The ones I've heard don't.
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah Scott, I guess, as you once so aptly put it 'I can't love everything'.
re: me and HoF
thanks to the old "bands all remember to tour in MN when springtime happens" rule, here is my 3 day lineup of grueling metal for the mid month:
4/16 Sleepytime Gorilla Museum/Guzzlemug4/17 Finntroll/Moonsorrow/Swallow the Sun4/18 Amon Amarth/Eluveitie/Holy Grail
am i too old? will i survive? do i really need to be able to hear the world around me in the future?
― HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:00 (sixteen years ago)
lol @ Doran's (I assume it's Doran's) Quietus AFD piece on Varg
― acoleuthic, Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:01 (sixteen years ago)
Aw man I wanna see Finntroll!
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)
I bet Moonsorrow kills it live

Trollwives get in free on Wednesdays
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
I occasionally end up listening to that Moonsorrow album Chapter V and I tell you what, it's bloody good. Anything else like it I should hear?
― acoleuthic, Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)
still haven't listened to the new cathedral OR the new (off-topic, but cmon, it's the sequel to my fave album of 2007) erykah badu - good timez!!
― original bgm, Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:11 (sixteen years ago)
re: moonsorrow -
v. havitetty is the best I've heard but verisäkeet is also cool
also bet the live should would be epic
― original bgm, Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:12 (sixteen years ago)
erykah badu is pretty metal
only have chapter v, kivenkantaja and verisakeet - they seem to like nature and esp birds quite a lot
― acoleuthic, Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)
I don't really love moonsorrow that much on record I just bet they're rad live
― Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

*ears prick up*

New metal records currently in stores that I like: Armored Saint, La Raza; Barren Earth, Curse of the Red River; Defeatist, Sixth Extinction; Fatalist, The Depths of Inhumanity (I think this one's actually from '09); Ihsahn, After; Landmine Marathon, Sovereign Descent; Lost Soul, Immerse in Infinity (again, from '09, but made no impact); Ludicra, The Tenant; Obscura, Retribution reissue; Rotting Christ, AEALO; Triptykon, Eparistera Daimones.
― neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)
thx to local booking hero Swordlord Productions, ive seen all of the listed bands playing that weekend other than Swallow the Sun and Holy Grail. and yes, finntroll and moonsorrow are pretty awesome live.
xpost: yeah i cant say enough good things about that ihsahn record, its amazing
― HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:19 (sixteen years ago)
also lj since you are around this thread, im going to take this opportunity to reiterate that i think you would go completely nuts over the sleepytime stuff from what i know about yer tastes
― HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:21 (sixteen years ago)
Is the Negura Bunget out yet?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
Understood, JJ. You're not the only person to tell me that!
― acoleuthic, Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
I told him years ago, so did abbott I think.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:25 (sixteen years ago)
Also I think this has also been pushed to LJ upthread but the first 2 tracks of the new Cathedral sound like the heaviest possible Yes with the wind sections of Van Der Graaf and Art Bears drafted in. Actually C. Squire-esque bass assertion throughout the album.
― Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
just tell him its not really metal so his mates wont slag him off and he will jump right in! ;)

Holy Christ, count me in on that.

I haven't seen either Negura Bunget album in stores, but then I've never actually seen a Negura Bunget album in a store in person, regardless.
My only-one-from-2010 nomination would be down to HIM, Immolation, Ludicra, Rotting Christ and Triptykon. If you have no other metal, and are trying to make up for that, then Immolation may be the most definitively and contextlessly metal of those five. If you're looking for 1 metal album because that's as close as possible to 0 metal albums, then HIM is a joyous rock album with a fabulous goth-metal wardrobe.
― glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 1 April 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)
I have to echo all the Ludicra and Triptykon recommendations. Armored Saint is right up there too.
The Cathedral album is so great. It's funny how I finally got around to listening to it right after that discussion on metal double albums. This just might be the best one I've heard.
