Agalloch still in pre-production. With luck it could be out by year's end.

***

I'm hoping that my love for this new Cathedral will unlock some of the secrets of their catalog. I've only liked their purist doom albums until this latest...

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

Saw Immortal in '02; didn't feel the need to see them again in '07 or last night (especially since last night's gig was in Brooklyn). Next shows I'm going to are High On Fire/Priestess/Bison B.C. next Friday, and then Amon Amarth toward the end of April.

That Amon Amarth is in nyc? Date?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, when the lights went on. kinda like maiden and "always look on the bright side of life".

original bgm, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

Immortal would be great fun to see. Too bad they're not into more extensive touring.

And congrats, Nate! The wait for that Agalloch album has been far too long.

really like the new Fear Factory. it's amazing how simple a formula they've stuck to for all these years, and while they aren't exactly genre defining artists, they know how to craft a solid tune.

saw em tonight tho and boy was Burton hoarse. and I don't mean by the end of the show, I mean by the third song.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Thursday, 1 April 2010 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

ok so was at the high on fire etc. show this evening and i dont want to ruin anyones hopes but U_U

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:14 (sixteen years ago)

not good? :-(

ksh, Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:21 (sixteen years ago)

bison b.c. - super awesome
black cobra - also super awesome
priestess - had me for the first 3 songs and then got BORING. also let the not lead singer dude sing more because he was 1000% better than the regular dude
high on fire - ok seriously how stupid are you dudes. PLAY SOME SHIT OFF THE NEW ALBUM. and lets be clear i dig the blessed black wings stuff (none of which seemed to be happening) but yer new shit is the reason i got dudes that hated yer stuff to come out to the show. waited patiently for snakes for the divine and bastard samurai, but you had to spend an hour fucking noodling and boring the fuck out of me. fuck your back catalog, and fuck you for making me get bored enough not to care if you were going to bother to encore with shit i cared about.

fucking terrible

haha uh xpost yeah NO

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:22 (sixteen years ago)

on the positive side, i have locked my AWESOME GIRLY METAL vote for the year, and it is the devin townsend project - addicted. amazing.

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:27 (sixteen years ago)

I love that Devin Townsend record! Made my P&J poll last year.

Also, I would definitely say that Fear Factory are genre defining artists -- they pretty much defined their hybrid of industrial and death metal.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:31 (sixteen years ago)

also (and i know this is old news by now) but holy shit the ex deo romulus is the album i should have voted up in last years metal poll (or uh would have if i had heard it). so so good.

xpost yah srsly, track 7 (ih-ah?) is the prettiest poppy thing i have heard in years. i would listen to the radio if it sounded like that!

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

oh boo i just checked the release date and my 2010 girly metal vote is DENIED

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

Thijs, Thursday, 1 April 2010 07:29 (sixteen years ago)

with love to jjjusten, I have never been disappointed (like, in the slightest) by a high on fire show, and the # of people at a show - by any band, usually - whose complaint is "not enough new stuff!" is generally pretty dang low

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 07:57 (sixteen years ago)

I can't wait to hear the new High on Fire stuff live. Hopefully they'll be trekking across Western Canada soon (they always do). And yeah, I can see Priestess being absolutely dwarfed by the other three bands on that crushing bill. I don't really understand the love for that band at all.

Oh, and the new Cathedral is pretty darn great. Especially the first half.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 1 April 2010 08:18 (sixteen years ago)

Priestess 'meh' co-signed, but their drummer is quite something tho, one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen. He broke *three* snare drums in the first three song when they opened for Bigelf last month in Amsterdam.

Thijs, Thursday, 1 April 2010 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

^ Jealous you got to see Bigelf! I passed on seeing the Closer To Doom tour and have regretted it ever since.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 April 2010 09:07 (sixteen years ago)

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 April 2010 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

That article had me, and then swiftly lost me.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 1 April 2010 09:37 (sixteen years ago)

I'm kinda surprised Bison are the first band on that bill - Black Cobra should be opening the show. And I like Priestess. But whatever.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Thursday, 1 April 2010 10:36 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Bigelf is a pretty sweet live band. Fun moment at that show: when Damon Fox gave a shout-out to former tour buddies Dream Theater to thunderous applause, he happened to look straight at me (arms folded across my Bolt Thrower tee) and my equally non-impressed mate who gave him a nice big Taake-style thumbs down. Luckily that put a big smile on his face, although he did say he would "tell Mike Portnoy". Good times.

Thijs, Thursday, 1 April 2010 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

that review should be posted on its own thread for all to read it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

what is the most masculine genre of music?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

ok in the cold bright not quite as drunk as i was last night light of day, i was maybe a bit too harsh re:HOF upthread, but it def was a disappointment not to hear much of anything off the new album. i also have a mongo hatred for the save the new shit for the third encore ploy, which i assumed was what happened. idk tho, because the dude who i convinced to go to the show by getting him into the new album was getting super irritable so we left towards the end of the main set.

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

Usually when an albums only out for a few weeks people complain there's too much new stuff and want older material they're more familiar with.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

I don't say this super-often: Herman otm!

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, but I just listed the Snakes again, that shit fucking rocks. Id be bummed if it didnt get a big air at a concert i went to. Hell, its short enought to play the whole thing.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

Guys I have tried with Blessed Black Wings like a half-dozen times but, though I really like its sound and style, it just never sticks to my ribs, never draws me back for more listens. Is the new one likely to turn me?

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

BBW snared me halfway through the first song, I must have listened to that twice a day for a month when it first came out. The new one is different, a little faster tempo most of the way through, but i dont really have the writer chops to describe it.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 April 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

the only way it's gonna be a big deal that there are women in Ludicra, is if writers make a big deal out of it.

richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

hey guys i'm thinking about stopping by the record store today, and have bought almost no metal so far this year (just new arsis and new hof). what's one thing i should get? if you want to sell me on it in a sentence or two that would be awesome.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

Ludicra

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

If the new Cathedral is there BUY IT. Everything ppl are saying upthread about it is true.

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

I just don't get the Cathedral love. I'll keep trying..

richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

The Triptykon album is out.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

xpost I wasn't crazy about the Cathedral I'd heard before, but the new thing is just an undeniable conquering force.

album of the year

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

I love the new Abscess, like, a lot a lot, so there's that, too

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

ok guys; i hope they have it!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

Cathedral should be out if you're in the UK; US release is April 20.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

I like the new Cathedral a bunch. It makes me giggle a bit without being ~wacky~ and some of the riffs are all-timers

There should be a name for the thing they do on the last song on the album, where they incorporate all their old album titles into the lyrics

artfuckoleuthic (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

oh n/m; it will not be out

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

You need to download it and write an IOU to remind yourself to pick it up. I have it pre-ordered at my local shop but couldn't wait after all the effusive praise.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

i'll remember---i try to download in advance as little as possible.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 April 2010 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

"Guys I have tried with Blessed Black Wings like a half-dozen times but, though I really like its sound and style, it just never sticks to my ribs, never draws me back for more listens. Is the new one likely to turn me?"

i'm in the minority on ilm, they bore the hell out of me. i tried with every album. i really liked the first ten seconds or whatever of blessed black wings. that drum intro. i never liked anything by them more than that. so, i've kinda given up. watched the video for the new song off of the new album and hit the snooze button. hey, ten seconds of pleasure is better than nothing, i guess.
