Yes, there is no Kids or Time To Pretend here, but everybody have known that for months. And not enough hooks? Come on, it's a way too much hooks here. MGMT second album >>> Vampire Weekend second album

That's a bit like saying cold vomit tastes better than warm vomit.
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
i think with the idea of hipsters often comes the idea of being "in the know" so your conception of hip hop and r&b rules u out, Doran. suggest u rebut whiney in this wise.
― harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
i like this album a lot, but this thread is funny.it's like listening to people decide whether or not they want to have fun.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)
i decided i wanted to have fun, so i stopped listening to the stream of this album

"i think with the idea of hipsters often comes the idea of being "in the know" so your conception of hip hop and r&b rules u out, Doran. suggest u rebut whiney in this wise."
This is *exactly* what I said to him, but he said that it didn't matter and that I was a hipster anyway.
(In my defence, I don't pretend to know anything about R&B or hip hop from the last decade or so.)
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
would anyone mind if we turned this into the fourth Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record thread?
― ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
i think this thread should just be destroyed, tbh.
― mizzell, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)
you could do a million things in this world to have funyou could play frisbee with a dogor kiss a girlor have a barbeque with some friends on a sunny dayand you suggest that i need this pitiable little collection of songs?
― And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)
are those lyrics to an MGMT song?
― ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, you know m@tt, always railing off actual mgmt lyrics
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

when you were trying, among other things, to back up yr writer's claim that rihanna was "the archetypal ghetto hustler" in the comments to his "piece", you were pretending to know something abt r&b and hip hop, alas. if u have a new resolution not to do so in the wake of that, all power to you.
― harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:14 (sixteen years ago)
Look, you dull witted cretin. It says about 58 times I think he was entirely WRONG you fucking dullard.
All I said was that he was not a racist. Try reading before mouthing off. I do NOT think that Rhianna is an archetypal ghetto hustler...
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:18 (sixteen years ago)
Johnnyo could you please stop condemning people who hate on this album as unfun? I don't think this album is meant to represent fun and at any rate being fun is a really lame defense going for it.
― Moka, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

you don't think you were trying to back him up? ok then. the comments speak for themselves.
― harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:25 (sixteen years ago)
I was - QUITE CLEARLY - attacking the suggestion that I allowed racist writers to pen for The Quietus.
Oh look, here's a quote from me: "I don't think Rhianna is an archetypal ghetto hustler." Fancy that.
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:28 (sixteen years ago)
here's another, there are more
"Yeah, how in God's name could you ever apply such a blinkered term to someone who's recorded with Jay-Z, signed to Def Jam, collaborated on an Memphis Bleek album named after a housing project, released an album called 'Good Girl, Gone Bad', sings about killing a boyfriend in 'Unfaithful' and the wholesome 'Rehab'."

Can we save that battle for another thread fellas? We're trying not to enjoy MGMT in here thanks.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:32 (sixteen years ago)
Xpost: quite. I'd just like to say thanks to dickwad for point several thousand people back over to my site. Cheers.
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:36 (sixteen years ago)
and by "another thread" he means let's put it in a box and dump it in a river
― what's pooping ahn (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:38 (sixteen years ago)
maybe put MGMT's new record that haven't heard yet in the box too
― ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:39 (sixteen years ago)
ok but i wanna scratch off that cover first
― facepalm death (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:42 (sixteen years ago)
yes iirc trolling for hits was your real defense of that piece.
― harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
you guys wanna talk about the new deftones record instead?
― And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:46 (sixteen years ago)
the only rationale for not liking this album i've read on this thread is "it doesn't have the hit singlz".i'd like to talk about what's ACTUALLY on the record.i'm not saying this album is Blonde on Blonde, but you guys are starting to sound like my mom for christ's sake.
all i've been getting so far are a bunch of "withering" generic chandler comebacks like "could i BEEE anymore this record sucks???"
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)
Dude, its okay if we don't like a record. I hated the first listen, so I'm not going to sit through it again just to make you feel better.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
XPost: I've listened to it four times now.
Ok. Here are a few for starters. Its psychedelia is unpsychedelic. Instead it is twee, mannered, goofy and aimless. To the extent that it makes a Flight Of The Conchords LSD music parody sound like The Calico Wall by comparison.
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:10 (sixteen years ago)
thank you doran! see, this is what i'm looking for. that is an interesting observation! you know how to make them, you win!
chandler dude above him, you are the loser today!
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)
Good grief.
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:15 (sixteen years ago)
exactly!
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)
i agree about the psychedelia thing. i think it's interesting for a band go for psychedelia and miss the target so completely. that is one of the reasons i like these jokers.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:18 (sixteen years ago)
it reminds me of when pearl jam did "art" on Vitalogy.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)
Seriously johnnyo, fuck off. K?
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)
I mean, no need to insult me for not indulging in your little game.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:21 (sixteen years ago)
music tagged psychedelic is rarely actually psychedelic, in my experience. most of the time it just denotes use of phasers and late 60's vibes.
― facepalm death (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, i imagine these dudes sitting in their dashkekis and telling the producer they want more reverb.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)
But I don't even hear that much dedication in the record! My biggest problem after that one listen is that it seemed pretty dull and lifeless. I loved the debut because it was fun and packed with so much joy. This time around things just feel a lot more flat.
I'm sure that doesn't count as "valid" criticism though.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:26 (sixteen years ago)
that is totally valid, thank you dude!i am also pretty surprised that this thing is a downer the WHOLE WAY THROUGH.i think we're gonna get one of these downer "leave me alone" records out of Lady Gaga soon too. what are the vegas odds on lady gaga's next album being a "dark examination" of something?
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:29 (sixteen years ago)
Wow I think you just helped me nail my main criticism, I don't want a "downer" record from MGMT. That's about the complete opposite of what I look for in them! Lady GaGa already has some pretty dark elements in her music, particularly some of the non-singles on the her mini-album.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i don't think anyone wanted a downer record from these dudes.but now we know what one would sound like.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
*clears throat*
it's like listening to people decide whether or not they want to have fun.

that's a pretty perfect summation of this record, i guess.at times you think they're gonna go for it, and then...
too bad cuz that cover is the funnest thing i've ever seen. it looks like a folder i had in 3rd grade.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:36 (sixteen years ago)
the only rationale for not liking this album i've read on this thread is "it doesn't have the hit singlz".
i already explained myself you fucking retard
thin-sounding, derivative, twee, joyless, sexless, rhythmless, hookless "retro pastiche" that really "highlights their influences"
