Broken Social Scene - LP 4

ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 05:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I am scared of growing up. Scared that one day, I will find the buzzbands of 2k9-2k11 to be ‘dated.’ One day I will turn my back on them, searching for something more authentic. Something more ‘now.’

Making so many memories, riding chillwaves, visiting Pavilions, cherrypicking from the hypemachine. But one day, I will get a new computer, and I won’t migrate these mp3s with me.

let me know if I'm putting this link in the wrong BSS thread!

This band started to decline with the introduction of Lisa Lobsinger

http://guttersnipemedia.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/363px-lisa_lobsinger.jpg

The last couple times I saw this band, she was the replacement for Feist, Emily Haines, and Amy Millan. That picture sums it up. Awful! Completely lifeless. Yet, she continues to remain in the band.

When I was really into this band, you'd see Feist running around the stage, switching up instruments. Having fun. These dudes are old now.

She was in the audience the first time I saw them... knew her because she worked at a local record shop in Calgary. I knew all these only because my friend had a crush on her.

Feeling a little more optimistic about this album.

Benjamin-, Friday, 9 April 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay, so it leaked.

Benjamin-, Monday, 12 April 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

should i start a thread for the leak?

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:00 (fourteen years ago) link

new mp3 leaks? deserves a new thread imo

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Did these guys ever get decent again or did they keep sucking after their 3rd album? (I stopped paying attention about 4 years ago)

Darin, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

New album seems pretty weak on first listen.

Benjamin-, Monday, 12 April 2010 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

every bss release up until now (including brendan canning & kevin drew) is at least very good

samosa gibreel, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i haven't heard Feel Good Lost since 2005, but do you think that one's worthwhile too?

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i barely even remember what it sounded like -- it was all instrumental i think? maybe ambient in parts? *shrugs*

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:41 (fourteen years ago) link

ya it's just really pretty "ambient" instrumental jams. i tend to start my broken social scene calendar on yfip but fgl is nice, a friend of mine put it on one night, def some solid moments of transcendental beauty contained on that record.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

just heard "Forced To Love" . . . i don't think i'll be buying this record :-(

ksh, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I miss the production of s/t.

calstars, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh come on. Really? Barf out.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 04:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm not loving this after one listen.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

RIP BSS, i can see this record getting tepid reviews and falling off the face of the earth more or less immediately

ksh, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 14:46 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe, but "Art House Director" is awesome.

Simon H., Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Aside from "Art House Director" and "Water in Hell," this album is really boring.

Benjamin-, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 17:24 (fourteen years ago) link

velko, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd say

Sweetest Kill
Art House Director
Ungrateful Little Father
All to All
World Sick

all count as at least being "pretty good." I don't think there's as much glut as there was on the s/t (IE "Bandwitch," etc.).

Simon H., Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah there are some decent tunes here... its growing on me. But that Lisa Lobsinger comment up thread is OTM, "All to All" sucks.

sofatruck, Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago) link

also I think McEntire's production is kind of a step up tbh - I'd love to hear what he'd have done with the s/t material

Simon H., Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:56 (fourteen years ago) link

"Romance to the Grave" is a neat tune, too. Not so keen on "Water in Hell," though I get that people dig its Pavement-y vibe. (I hear Spiral Stairs makes some cameos on this one?)

Simon H., Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Not a big fan of Ungreatful Little Father. Other than World Sick, I think the Kevin Drew songs are kind of weak. Also, he comes off abrasive or maybe cynical on this album. Do you hear that at all?

Benjamin-, Thursday, 15 April 2010 05:52 (fourteen years ago) link

this band only has one good song, the one where the girl sings with the robot voice about other girls putting on makeup. if you conform to gender roles, you are a robot! whoooaaaaa so many layers

8.3 -- BNM

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14200-forgiveness-rock-record/

ksh, Monday, 3 May 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

That works out nicely since they have 8.3 guitarists.

billstevejim, Monday, 3 May 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

it's a good record. crank up the volume to 8.3.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 3 May 2010 16:44 (fourteen years ago) link

(i'm actually looking forward to hearing this).

the broken social scene are the worst

they thoroughly stink up the world.

After a few listens, completely underwhelmed. At it's worst it's just 'noodly,' with unintelligible lyrics and weak melodies

calstars, Friday, 7 May 2010 14:29 (fourteen years ago) link

you are correct

so far, i'm only digging "World Sick," "Forced To Love," and "All To All"

i guess thats fair but how about LP 4?

Did you in fact lift my luggage (dyao), Friday, 7 May 2010 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe we need a new thread.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 7 May 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

It's growing on me. Definitely their weakest album. But I still like this band and I love seeing them live.

Benjamin-, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

this record is execrable!

ksh, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

rip broken social scene -- LP4. an album this good deserved two threads.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 8 May 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago) link

hahaha, was getting way too confusing!

giving this one more chance & then deleting it tbh

deleting it track by track, as they each finish. RIP BSS

(re: upthread recc) If you haven't checked out the Radio Dept. album, ksh, it really is great. It's been on heavy rotation in my apartment for the last month.
