also, the little flute solo is funny.

Kids is totally like 2kx "Sex and Candy". But if you haven't heard some of the other tracks you should listen to this:

seems like most people's opinions are colored by some idea about mgmt that doesn't have much to do with the actual music. the amount of hate they inspire is a sign that they're doing something interesting, imho. the first track on this new one i'm particularly digging... great melodies, harmonies, sonic textures, etc. what's to hate?
i also think it's weird these guys are seen as rock stars. they just seem like awkward stoners to me, which is endearing.
also, i love the cover art.

― And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)
exactly. what's to hate? it just sounds like a musical album. made by a band. they made another album before this one that sounded like whatever, and now this one sounds like this. are people accusing this band of being reverse-sellouts or what is the problem?
a band had like two hits and then changed their sound a bit on the next album. is this offensive? unheard of?maybe you people should listen to the black crowes instead of this indie rock stuff. you're obviously getting confused.
― johnnyo, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)
people are accusing them of not being very good
― goole, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
then i take it back, you probably won't like the black crowes either...

love where this thread is going

can we turn this into a rockism thing? i've got a looong day left at work.
― johnnyo, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think they've sold out or really changed their sound all that much. Both those arguments are pretty silly for any band imo.
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)
I think it's a case of the songs were just more memorable on the first record and because they are so hyped everyone is reading all this extra stuff into that. I just think it boils down to better songs the first time.
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:46 (sixteen years ago)
honestly surprised that the Ausgang artwork might be the best thing about this album. I was hoping for at least one more "Kids" out of the deal. what the hell Soulwax supposed to remix off of this dud?
― like a musical album. made by a band. (fucking in the streets), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:48 (sixteen years ago)
strangely, parts of this album remind me of Cornelius.
― johnnyo, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:06 (sixteen years ago)
^^^stop tempting me to hear it!
actually when this fuckmare of a class assignment is done i will listen to it, and return with judgements
― LiveJournal (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:09 (sixteen years ago)
i dunno, i hear lots of things in it at times. Cornelius, the Chrysanthemums, Homosexuals, late-period Turtles, early Supergrass. Flaming Lips, of course. it's interesting, at least.
― johnnyo, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:14 (sixteen years ago)
Wish Cornelius was releasing a new album!
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
Maybe all that touring w Yoko will get him back into writing music again...
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
did he ever release anything after Point?
― johnnyo, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
Sensuous is pretty amazing. Same minimal/robotic mix of sounds, really well done, some wonderful experiments in there too. They have a DVD for the entire album that features mindblowing animation from Koichiro Tsujikawa. Subsequent multimedia tours followed, along with a live DVD release. Parts of the live DVD are on youtube and it looks incredible but my days of forking over $50 for a Japanese DVD are sadly over....

4 star review from Spin

― Traditional Bundy, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:42 (sixteen years ago)
that's pretty expected i would assume
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:46 (sixteen years ago)
SPIN is prob more invested in the career of mgmt than any other rock band currently going
also i thought they changed from 5-star scale to 10-point scale? i guess that's tough to code on a website tho
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:47 (sixteen years ago)
commiseration to SPIN for their tough-to-code website
― *makeitplop* (haitch), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:28 (sixteen years ago)
other way around, they used to be 10 scale and are now 5
― ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:29 (sixteen years ago)
wait, no way, i swear they changed to a 10 scale pretty much at the beginning of this year
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:32 (sixteen years ago)
oh duh, i have a current issue right here that has reviews on a 10 scale. what am i thinking of? they went to an ABCDF scale for a while? i just remember them changing it for a few years there.
― ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:35 (sixteen years ago)
they could try out a Do Re Mi scale, that would really bring the readers in
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:22 (sixteen years ago)
I rate this album a half-diminished seventh
― it is just like an unknown puzzle till the end of the world (dyao), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:26 (sixteen years ago)
This is a really great album, first two tracks are especially good. Hipsters and GHEYS will hate it though!

You're right, I'm gay and I hate it. According to Whiney I'm a hipster as well. So you've got me bang to rights.
― Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:48 (sixteen years ago)
i dont hate the album as thats just a waste of useful energy. i'm completely indifferent to it.ok, perhaps i'm a little annoyed i wasted 30 minutes of my life maybe, but i was on the payroll during the stream, so not all is lost.
― mark e, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:21 (sixteen years ago)
'Dan Treacy' is my favourite here, completely different from anything MGMT have ever done before. It is a really charming song, with a little Television Personalities-resemblence, and I really can't imagine anyone hating it.
― zeus, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:32 (sixteen years ago)
u don't need to imagine, because it's really happening
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:37 (sixteen years ago)
Guys, sorry this album pretty much sucks. If there was maybe at least one hook even half as exuberant as "Kids" or "Time to Pretend" I might be willing to give it another chance. This is just kind of meandering and dull, like they willfully smoothed over the most joyful exclamations that made the last one work.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:43 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, there is no Kids or Time To Pretend here, but everybody have known that for months. And not enough hooks? Come on, it's a way too much hooks here. MGMT second album >>> Vampire Weekend second album

i think with the idea of hipsters often comes the idea of being "in the know" so your conception of hip hop and r&b rules u out, Doran. suggest u rebut whiney in this wise.
― harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
i like this album a lot, but this thread is funny.it's like listening to people decide whether or not they want to have fun.
― johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)
i decided i wanted to have fun, so i stopped listening to the stream of this album

This is *exactly* what I said to him, but he said that it didn't matter and that I was a hipster anyway.
(In my defence, I don't pretend to know anything about R&B or hip hop from the last decade or so.)

would anyone mind if we turned this into the fourth Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record thread?
