'photographs', 'people' and 'please don't follow me' are great

ehhh i mean dude has spent most of his limelight time talking about how much he appreciates it, how it feels like a second act and that he wanted to bow out when he was at a peak, so it doesn't surprise me and doesn't seem as disingenuous as hov's mic drop. and i hardly read this announcement as "i am retiring" w/ or w/o a wink, just "this will be the last lcd record" which is a much diff thing imo

he's also said he has to tell himself that every time to make sure he puts in the best effort he can, like Robert Smith announcing every Cure record for fifteen years would be the last

James Murphy sounds exactly like Kermit The Frog on the opening track of the new album. Fact.

As Jaxon states above, the Timmy Thomas-channeling "People" is great.
Been loving the clip-clop/turn-indicator mumbly/choral Carol Kaye/Beach Boys thing on "Plenty Of Time", too.

it works as a standalone film even for non-fans, but the main thing is he picked good songs, it looks good and it sounds amazing (except maybe all my friends). audio mix had so much stuff in it you can't hear on the bootleg. definitely see it in a cinema with if you get the chance (americans: http://oscilloscope.net/lcdtheaters/)

yeah, some real 'remember when' there. supertempted to see the movie, scared by the klosterman - how heavy a presence?
― balls, Monday, 2 July 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link
an interview with him and murphy is used as a framing device, so he shows up with a question between about 2/3 of the songs. some of the questions are quite long.
― caek, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 08:39 (eleven years ago) link
"Some might even try to draw a parallel between "Losing My Edge" and Van Halen's single, "Running With the Devil". I remember being 18, sitting on the couch while the familiar chords blared, wondering if something like "Losing My Edge" would, in fact, ever, come along. We threw cheap beer cans on the floor and smoked hand-rolled cigarettes. Some might draw a parallel there, but I wouldn't. I've really never thought about it, and I don't have an opinion on it."
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 13:29 (eleven years ago) link
klosterman says something like "i don't know if you'll take this as an insult, but i think losing my edge is your best song"
― caek, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link
and then "well, I guess I don't really know what your best song is. but maybe, I can see how people would argue that it's Losing My Edge"

just watched the trailer, all the smiley crowd shots made it look like a car/beer ad. maybe when lcd do their 'big festival reunion to play that one classic album all the way through' in a few years they can document that fascinating story as well.

i guess there is an unavoidable slightly self-congratulatory thing, but the crowd shots are actually great. none of that glastonbury picking out the assholes with the wales/cornwall flag bullshit. some of the crowd stuff is looking toward the stage from floor level, which is, uh, immersive. there are also some quite bored looking guys in the crowd too which is honest i suppose. it is a pretty film.

The songs in this movie are beautiful and enthralling, but the Klosterman parts are embarrassing. I think there's probably more footage of his grandstanding and repetition of his his 'theories' than there is of Murphy's answers. Similarly, the concert looked excellent, whereas the morning after footage was about 70% watching camera operators struggle to find focus.
I'm hoping when the DVD/Bluray comes out it'll have a music-only edit, because that'll be one of the finer concert films I can imagine.

the original live stream was easily the best live 'event' ive ever experienced on the net so yeah a polished version of the whole show would be flat out sensational i think.
who's Klosterman btw or do i.. not want to know?

this is exactly what I was afraid of; Klostermann is okay in small doses but I can totally see how he could basically ruin a movie like this
I'm sure someone else could describe him better than me but he's basically a long-time stoner journalist who writes half-baked theories at length before ultimately concluding that he thinks they're worthless or that he really doesn't have an opinion, priding himself on how underdeveloped his own thoughts are. Y'know, the guy who writes a five-page essay on a band he's never heard that ultimately turns into stories about listening to Van Halen records while hung over 25 years ago. He does occassionally write some brilliant stuff, but you really have to dig for it.

while...hung?
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Thursday, 19 July 2012 14:02 (eleven years ago) link
i'd never heard of him going in. he seemed kind of an idiot, but he's not in it enough for me to have formed a proper opinion. i guess this means he's not in it enough for it to be a serious problem, unless you go in knowing his thing and ready to bristle every time he comes on screen.
― caek, Thursday, 19 July 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link
i actually didn't mind klosterman as much as I usually do. his theorizing fits lcd/murphy better then most his interviews imo.
but yeah, basically the movie comes down if you want to see concert footage of lcd and are a fan, see it. not much doing otherwise.

This is the last thing I expected to write: I got weary of the music fast while wanted more of Klosterman's interview. He started gaseous but in the last bits he asked a couple of sharp questions which Murphy couldn't wriggle out of. As for the music, it reminded me of my mixed reaction to an otherwise spectacular show I saw in fall '10: Murphy has no business singing live.
