I need to break down and just subscribe to Decibel, I keep buying it off the newsstand.

You're lucky you could get it in the newsagents. Not only did smiths not stock it but you couldn't even get it in Glasgow. Even Borders didn't stock it before they went bust.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 18 March 2010 23:27 (sixteen years ago)
Its weird to be in this position, for most of my life I've been jealous of all the good music rags the Brits put out that I have to pay import prices for!
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 18 March 2010 23:29 (sixteen years ago)
There was only one place in Dublin that had it, and they stopped stocking it a couple of years ago. But it definitely came through a UK distributor - that bloody superglued sticker was pasted over the barcode on the front.

smiths didnt even get the 2nd last Wire in. My mate got me the latest in glasgow, no idea if they have that one in, but smiths definitely are cutting down on the amount of music mags they get.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 18 March 2010 23:32 (sixteen years ago)
yet you can buy the nme, mojo,Q,uncut, kerrang and mixmag in every supermarket and mini-market/corner shop.

I just subscribed to Decibel, too, and got the current issue (which I already had, of course) along with the hilarious New Wave of Stupid Heavy Metal Acronyms shirt I ordered in about a week.

Being unemployed and broke means I broke down and bought Ludicra offa iTunes. Figured it was better to pay the $7 than continue waiting til I can afford the physical copy.

It takes a while for the international copes of Decibel to arrive, trust me on that, so it's best to be patient. But Mark Evans is super nice and will answer any question you might have, his email address is in the masthead if you have an older copy.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 19 March 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)
xpost - Jon I do believe that Ludicra's 2nd album is also up on iTunes for a low price as part of some Alternative Tentacles anniversary sale...
― Nate Carson, Friday, 19 March 2010 08:02 (sixteen years ago)
Looks like Raven is playing the Abbey Pub in Chicago on 9/18. I assume (hope) that's the NWOBHM one.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 19 March 2010 18:21 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, should be; they've got a new album coming out.

Fastnbulbous--go see Ludicra + Clad in Darkness in Chicago at Underground Lounge on Sat 4/10 :)
― Nate Carson, Friday, 19 March 2010 20:51 (sixteen years ago)
I'm not Fastnbulbous, but I think I'm going to try to make that show anyway!
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 19 March 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
That's not a bad place to see a show either, an ex gf of mine used to play there a lot with her band. Only downside is it being right in the heart Wrigleyville surrounded by stunted 30 year old frat boy bars. Thankfully the Cubs are out of town the night of that show, so it won't be as bad.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 19 March 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)
Cool. Well that show changed venues like 4 times so if you have any means to help spread the word that it's at Underground Lounge, that would be muy excelente :)
― Nate Carson, Friday, 19 March 2010 23:11 (sixteen years ago)
I'm looking forward to Ludicra when they hit Maine - them, Ocean & Krallice & more. Should be quite a night.
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 20 March 2010 02:37 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah that's a good one. How is Aok Suicide Forest anyway?
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 21 March 2010 00:01 (sixteen years ago)
It's Leif from Conifer's new band - I'm not sure why Conifer fell apart, but Leif told a mutual friend he wanted to throw more early Priest into the mix which is a big plus in my book. I haven't had a chance to see them nor to see Kaveldt, which is a couple of the other Conifer guys.
― EZ Snappin, Sunday, 21 March 2010 00:58 (sixteen years ago)
One of the dudes from The Sword sent me a message on YouTube asking if I'd recorded any more songs from their Stubb's set - he wanted to see the footage. I had to tell him, with some regret, that I had not.

Being the son of a forester, this made me laugh out loud.

I dont think you need to be a son of a forester to find it funny tbh!

New Deftones record is more aggressive than Saturday Night Wrist but doesn't break any new ground. Really makes me wonder what Eros would have sounded like.

I hoped someone would appreciate the dry wit of my phrasing! Glad it got a laugh.

That was worth logging in. (ducks)

Anyone heard the new Howling Wind? I was listening to some old Thralldom and saw The Howling Wind had a new one coming out. Profound Lore has an mp3 up:

I'm really enjoying Mastabah's debut full length. It somehow reminds me of the first couple Hypocrisy albums, but updated with some of the new technical and "brutal" elements. It's one of my favorites for this year so far.

was kinda taken by surprise when i saw the cover of the new Decibel! don't know why, but i was.
― scott seward, Monday, 22 March 2010 20:09 (sixteen years ago)
I didn't think they'd do it. Hope it's a well-written cover story.
― A. Begrand, Monday, 22 March 2010 20:51 (sixteen years ago)
I know they've lost at least one subscriber. Wonder how many more they'll lose.

I've been revisiting Bigelf's Money Machine every day for the last two weeks. Damn that is a solid record. Most bands can't write songs like that (even if most of the riffs are pretty much stolen from the Beatles and King Crimson).
― Nate Carson, Monday, 22 March 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)
someone on Twitter said it's Varg

I don't really think they'll lose too many subscribers over it, but I'm surprised they did it. But hey, controversy supposedly sells - right?
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 22 March 2010 23:17 (sixteen years ago)
For or against--it is a big story in heavy metal right now.

what's the controversy?

I'm not going to cancel my Decibel subscription (of which this is my first issue), but I'd much rather have seen Warrior on the cover.
On that subject, though, I'm not warming to the Triptykon as fast as I'd hoped and expected. It's heavy, but in parts I find myself thinking, heretically, "But Sunn O))) do this better..." But I'll probably come around, eventually. I wasn't an instant believer in Monotheist, either. (And I liked Cold Lake fine, so...)
Guardedly optmistic about the new Metsatöll and both new Negurǎ Bunget albums, after one listen each, but I admit I wanted the NB to be darker or faster or something. Really liked my first play, just now, of Imperium Dekadenz's Procella Vadens. Looking forward to listening to Cathedral tomorrow.
But mostly: Ludicra.

Forks' - Check out Adrien's blog today http://abegrand.pitas.com/ - his handling of the person vs. the music is really on point. Personally, I don't care for his music so nothing tempers my loathing.

Yeah, my favorite Varg anything is the synth sax stuff. Blah.
