yes, this is a big benefit for NYC schools (though I'm not sure how the money collected is going to compare to the $50M Bill and Melinda dropped for charter schools last week). and it's also a massive promotion for some new AOL campaign. ah, synergy.

Dave did put a vague, Rodney King-ish statement opposing the war on his website a few months ago.

Haha, yeah, cos the million that AOL Time Warner is donating for this concert is really going to find its way into making schools a better place for kids and not into the pockets of NYC bureaucrats, not at all!

FYI the amount of manpower etc being used up to block down all the damn streets just in case--GASP--a nonticketholder for the Dave Matthews event tries to get near the park to--GASP--hear Dave Matthews is probably negating a similar amount of money out of the city coffers. There is absolutely no fucking reason for the amount of security going on right now. There are concerts in the park ALL THE TIME and this is the first time I've ever seen this.

I'm kind of hoping that this bullshit was the call of AOL Time Warner and NOT Matthews, because if Matthews insisted on this, he's a dick. You can't even enter the park unless you go all the way up or all the way down, because, again, god forbid a nonticketholder (to a FREE event, wtf?) hears the, uh, dulcet tones of the Dave.

Anyway I'm not knocking their concert really, it was a joke but if people are going to be all bloody serious about it, you might as well know the truth about the whole shenanegans. It was mentalism! I could get into the UN easier than I could've gotten into the park yesterday.

There are concerts in the park ALL THE TIME and this is the first time I've ever seen this.

To be fair, they really don't have full scale rock concerts on the Great Lawn very often at all. This isn't anything like Summer Stage, you know.

Yeah, there was a massive Garth Brooks show there back in the late 90s, it was a really big deal. They have classical concerts on the Great Lawn fairly often, but the enormous pop concerts come only once in a while. The notable mega-shows that they've had in the past on the same scale have been Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand.

There's no need to get too whiny about it. It's just a special occasion.

I've heard good reviews of it from people who hate Dave Matthews. Still, I'm doubtful that I will listen to it. .. But I'm also doubtful that I'll listen to the new Cure record or Lou Reed's The Raven anytime soon.... More of a matter of spending time wisely than being closed-minded.

Don't think I've ever heard them. Weren't they the band that some of the Friends (TV) were all worked up about some years ago? I remember being amused recently when AOL kept running news items about NYC having it's panties twisted in knots with excitement about a free DMB concert (sponsored by AOL). But I can't hate what I don't know. Maybe there's a force-field in Flatbush that keeps them away.

I will mention again that I discovered lately that one of my favorite salsa partners (who is increasingly also a friend) likes Dave Matthews a lot. My last girlfriend, who was also a very good dancer, said favorable things about him. Neither of these people fit the boring yuppie Dave Matthews Band stereotype, not in my judgment anyway.

Maybe ILMers just hate him because enticing women like him.
