myonga rules!!!
"persecution smith" is a ridiculous dylan ripoff, sure, but it's got this bubblegummy chorus that suggests he had a monkees LP on the changer, too. maybe even some archies. it's brilliant.
still absorbing the rest.
― fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 14:51 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, it's pretty great. Also: DO YOU SEE how easily the lyrics can be repurposed for laughs to be about 2010 and cr*zy t**b*gg*rs.
Has anyone detected the bowling alley sounds said to be on the early tracks? I can't, but I'm kinda deaf.
― M.V., Wednesday, 17 March 2010 15:58 (sixteen years ago)
(I think I mentioned this in another Seger thread but) real early on, he played the cafeteria at my dad's high school, and when someone asked him (pointedly, perhaps) to play some Dylan, his response was something like "I don't play Bob Dylan. I play Bob Seger."

hey folks, I sent in the CDDB info for Myonga's CDR, so if you have the CDR version you should get the track titles now! One more step in "legitimizing" this, still hoping for P&J votes.
― sleeve, Saturday, 27 March 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks, sleeve! (Too bad that the first few I sent have a slightly different sequence...)
― Half lies and gorilla dust (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:45 (sixteen years ago)
whoops! tell me what it is now and I will reconfigure, I need to burn a copy for a friend anyway so I'll do it with the correct order and reup it. I have a hunch it has to do with the placement of "Sock It To Me Santa"...

still hoping for P&J votes
Nearly a third of the way into the year, it's still on track to get 30 of mine.
― xhuxk, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
The cdr MVB circulated utterly kills, not a bad track on it. Quite a shock for someone like me who assiciates this guy with "Like A Rock" etc. Frigging awesome!
― Bill Magill, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)
is there still a dl link for the latest version of this avaliable? I got the earlier version, but that was the one with .wav files ... either way, it is awesome.
― tylerw, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:44 (sixteen years ago)
Mine was just the first download, not the CDR. Anyway, it kills.
― I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
tyler I converted the wmv tracks to mp3 and that's what I'm listening to. If nothing else I could up that.
― I Smell Xasthur Williams (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
not an emergency, but if you've got the time, that'd be awesome, Jon.
― tylerw, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:53 (sixteen years ago)
hey i never got the email with the link to the CD/mp3s!
― by another name (amateurist), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, no bout adoubt it. Along with the Runaways soundtrack, it's the best hard rock 'record' I've listened to this year. If Seger had any sense he'd pay MVB a fee for artistic consulting, give him a piece per unit sold and put it in stores. Rhino Handmade couldn't have done a better job. That's assuming Seger owns all the rights now.
― Gorge, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:43 (sixteen years ago)
Joining the chorus for Myonga's Bob Seger comp. Might get my P&J #1 as well!

Damn, I was SURE I'd sent you one months ago! When i get home I'll try again. (Or for the first time, as the case may be...)

Cheers - got Ramblin' Gamblin' Man on vinyl last month and it's in heavy rotation at the moment.
Those early tracks on your comp are pretty damn good
― Deluxe Merseybeat Wig (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 16 October 2010 12:38 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, great stuff on this comp. What is the preferred tracklisting? I just put it in chron order, wasn't sure (rough b/c I didn't want to put "Ballad of the Yellow Beret" first even though I think that is the earliest single). Next time around I'd be happy to u/l this, I've fully tagged it with release years, individual bands, etc. Thanks a lot for making it.
― Mark, Saturday, 16 October 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)
Thanks for the link! It's funny to think that these songs would be so surprising to people, but I guess if you didn't grow up in the Detroit area (where many of these were as ubiquitous on local radio as anything by, say, Foghat or Boston) then there's a good chance you haven't heard them yet.
― henry s, Sunday, 17 October 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)
i think i've found the perfect cover photograph for this (awesome) comp. stay tuned as i get my scanner working.

i am still tuned tylerw

oh right! will get that together. it's kind of an amazing photo.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)
Tyler- where's my cover photo?
And secondly, putting together my best of '10 list and this is one of the reissues. MVB Records the "official" label or are we crediting it differently?
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 4 December 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
Here's how I'm listing it when I give it 30 Pazz & Jop points (hope I'm not alone in that), though I'm open to other suggestions:

Awesome -- I hope Michael Hann votes in Pazz & Jop! (I've never heard of him before -- does he post on ILX? If not, now I'm starting to wonder just how far and wide Myonga's Seger collection has been distributed in the past year.) I think he overstates the extent to which Seger was musically "conservative" (whatever that even means at this point), and maybe the extent to which punks rejected him any more than Petty or Springsteen (though I say that from a Detroit vantage point, of course, and Hann does go on to mention the Eddie & the Hot Rods and Thin Lizzy covers in the comments section.) I also had no idea that Face The Promise (for which I actually interviewed Seger for Billboard) sold enough to go platinum, either; but according to Wiki, at least, Hann's right.
― xhuxk, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)
I mean, "Old Time Rock N Roll" has a musically conservative message by definition, I guess, but "Looking Back" is expressly a song about how nostalgia's not a good thing.
― xhuxk, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)
OK, for completists' sake, I've uploaded a few more files, just to get those remaining Hideout recordings up there for whoever wants 'em. "Very Few" is a very uncharacteristic ballad but I like it OK. "Florida Time" features Seger on backing vocals only. "East Side Sound" is just "East Side Story"'s backing track with some indifferent lead guitar in place of vocals. And "Heavy Music Part III" is just something I made up myself for the hell of it, a stereo track consisting of Part 1 in one channel and Part 2 in the other.

And wrt the "album cover", here's my own attempt:
http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/5495755/bullets3.JPG.html
I know, it's pretty sloppy, garish and not too imaginative. But I'm in love with that assortment of record labels.

Grrr...

That's actually fairly decent. Take it on a cd down to the local FedEx office story and have it printed out on photo paper in postcard size. It'll look great, I can pretty much guarantee it, particularly if you can redo the parts as .bmp composite. That will have greater fidelity and resolution.
― Gorge, Sunday, 9 January 2011 07:19 (fifteen years ago)
that's nice, man.
