o shit. album on DFA? crazy.
i've got this http://www.discogs.com/Love-Of-Life-Orchestra-Extended-Niceties/master/204817
don't know that much about him but that he's worked w/tons of people and apparently still makes music for TV shows and movies and stuff.
― jaxon, Monday, 8 March 2010 23:05 (sixteen years ago)
played sax on and produced some arthur russell stuff.
man. just looking at the discogs of the stuff he's worked on is crazy. so much cool stuff. downtown ny in the early 80s was so cool
― jaxon, Monday, 8 March 2010 23:14 (sixteen years ago)
I was just listening to that track this evening, its great. There's some stuff on Peter Gordon in the (fantastic, easy to recommend) new Arthur Russell biography. Seems an interesting guy, into shit like ray charles&schoenberg growing up, had some student band that "morphed top 100 chart songs into freeform improvisations", hung out w/ don van vliet and played w/ chuck berry once. Played on Kiss Me Again w/david byrne, henry flynt and others.
― ogmor, Monday, 8 March 2010 23:32 (sixteen years ago)
holy shit how did i not know henry flynt was involved with "kiss me again"? i think i need more henry flynt albums
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Monday, 8 March 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)
that line up was sick. bit of a one-off for flynt, but I love a lot of his stuff

into shit like ray charles & schoenberg
ah.... shit like that ;)
― jed_, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 00:29 (sixteen years ago)
lady miss keir's vox and lyrics on that ray mang release are excruciating.
― jed_, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)
bit of a one-off for flynt
flynt is pretty much my favorite dude to turn to for blissed out droney music but i never got around to checking out that nova'billy stuff he was working on around this time pd, or even his stuff with the insurrections from the 60s. whatever it sounds like i'm sure it's nothing remotely stylistically similar to "kiss me again"
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
I'm also currently engaged in tracking down what I can find of the LOLO/Gordon/van Tieghem/Zummmo/etc axis after reading Hold on to Your Dreams. Makes sense that DFA are compiling Gordon now that his profile is marginally higher than it's been for a long time.
― seandalai, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 06:02 (sixteen years ago)
Peter Gordon also runs Thirsty Ear, where Matthew Shipp has been A&Ring the Blue Series for a fair bit now:http://www.jazzbreak.com/interview.php?jparm=ID_1821,lg_1,dossier_437
"Star Jaws" is a great P. Gordon album to look out for, esp. "Intervallic Expansion" (4th stream bar down at http://www.squidco.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=10951)
― Don't Make Me A Burrito (Craig D.), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 06:27 (sixteen years ago)
ady miss keir's vox and lyrics on that ray mang release are excruciating.
aren't they just. the black van single is also horrible.
peter gordon is a super interesting character. i have quite a few of his solo records which range from the amazing to the super dated sounding. he has played on everything from the dinosaur l lp to koyaanisqatsi to the fame soundtrack (or so i've been told). i've been looking forward to the dfa retrospective for a couple of years - is there a release date?
― stirmonster, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 06:41 (sixteen years ago)
I'm also currently engaged in tracking down what I can find of the LOLO/Gordon/van Tieghem/Zummmo/etc axis after reading Hold on to Your Dreams
peter zummo's "zummo with an x" lp is one of my all time favourite records and features one of arthur russell's greatest collaborations - the incomparable "song iv". i believe it is now available on cd and digitally.
i have bought a few van tieghem records over the years but have yet to find one i wanted to hear more than once. i'd be interested to hear if there are any that are highly recommended.
― stirmonster, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 06:51 (sixteen years ago)
Tiegham is so good as a band member but the albums (the two I had, Safety In Numbers and These Things Happen) just seemed to lack songs or sharp definition or something... but he plays great parts on some of my favorite records ever!
not to derail from this Peter Gordon thing, who I have never heard of but sounds interesting.
― sleeve, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 07:46 (sixteen years ago)
i've got 2 David Van Tieghem albums. i think These Things Happen (from 84) is pretty great. weirdy cosmic w/great percussion. i used the song "Remote Viewing" for one of my mixes (at 38 min). here's another track from that album.http://robotsinheat.com/temp/VanTieghemFaitAccompli.mp3
Safety In Numbers (from 87) i wasn't really a fan of. i think he got into fairlight synthy stuff and it just sounds too digital to me. i accidentally played the whole album at 45 one time and imo, it sounds way better.
― jaxon, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 19:20 (sixteen years ago)
Guys, the Mang/Kier thing is a George Clinton cover. Fair enough on the vocals but the lyrics really aren't her fault.
I haven't really lived with the Black Van single long enough to form an opinion (and now I don't have access to most of my music while I try to de-virus my computer) but the version on DFA's website mixed with "I Will Come Back" is nice enough.

― micarl, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:27 (sixteen years ago)
"Will be great to have don't don't"
you don't get that on this single and the "version" of don't don't is pretty poor. i either have a horribly corrupted file of this or the transition from heartbreak to don't don't is one of the most bizarrely clumsy things i've heard on a record.
― jed_, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:57 (sixteen years ago)
Think I'll hold out for the full LOLO retrospective.

i dunno, dfa put out so many awesome singles last year it can't really live up to it this year imo. hearing pat mahoney drop spaghetti circus last year might be the highlight of my life so far.
― plax (ico), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 20:49 (sixteen years ago)
speaking of spaghetti circus, the Juan Maclean DJ Kicks Vinyl sampler is pretty good value, includes spaghetti circus and Shit Robot Simple Things! http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/386679-01.htm?highlight=DJ%20KICKS%20JUAN

i like the crystal ark single and the new shit robot more than any dfa from 2009 as far as i can remember.
― jed_, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
actually apart from the "psychic city" classix remix.
what i'm saying is that they had a great year in 2009 and they're shaping up for an even better one this year.
― jed_, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)
ive never really come round to shit robot, i think the name puts me off, also have not heard this psychic city remix, but i have mixed feelings abt the orig.
― plax (ico), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)
i hate the name too actually, i have no idea why anyone would want to name themselves that, BUT if you don't hear "i got a feeling" then you're seriously missing out. song of the year s far for me.
― jed_, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)
LePoop. I like the name and i think he's one of the most talented guys on the DFA roster. His remix of Dragon and all his 12" kill me. Can't wait for his LP.

Really loving "I Know, I Hear"- does anyone know what the sample at the start of the track is from? It sounds really familiar but I can't place it ("prophet five, factory programs, January 1982, file one")

Thanks for the heads up on that Holy Ghost EP. It's nice to hear DFA-style dance tracks that don't beat you over the head with genre touchstones and hipster shoutouts but are still fun to listen to.
