This thread made my Sunday morning very unproductive. The Stevie Wonder Sesame Street thing is amazing. Here's one of my favorites. . .

Monks on German TV gets my vote. They invented about 40 genres that night.

Glen Campbell kind of rips the solo in that Wichita Lineman. Neat.

Wow, that Neil video is from 2008! Knew I shouldn't missed him on that tour.

Oh man that Otis Redding clip upthread is great. It's one of my favorite youtube clips ever.

I think this early TV performance by Jerry Lee Lewis probably helped sell rock and roll. The energy is definitely there.

First time I saw that Otis clip was in the context of a documentary about him and when it got to his death I almost burst into tears at the thought of never being able to see him live, at whatever age. That Try a Little Tenderness performance would be my one time-machine moment. The crowd are going absolutely apeshit.

My own favorite Jerry Lee Lewis is Beardo Jerry Lee. The, um, finger.

The Bo Diddly, Can and Who's Quick One are favorites too.

I wanted to post a clip of their legendary SNL performance from around the same time (89-90), but of course that was not on YT, but this is along the same lines:

I won't say this is actually the greatest ever, but the aural climax that starts building around 4:43 represents a moment that can never be replicated - Bootsy's Rubber Band "I'd Rather Be With You" live in Houston 1976:

thanks so much for describing this so I knew what it was and that it might be worth clicking on

That Bo Diddley clip completely blew my top btw.

Heartbreaking.

Turangalila, Monday, 8 March 2010 05:48 (sixteen years ago)

Prince "Purple Rain" at the American Music Awards 1985 is not on Youtube. Neither is "Territorial Pissings" on SNL.

billstevejim, Monday, 8 March 2010 05:51 (sixteen years ago)

Neither of those is the greatest musical performance captured on film, so i'm not sure why i bothered mentioning that.. They're both really good though.

billstevejim, Monday, 8 March 2010 05:52 (sixteen years ago)

cankles OTM throughout IMHO

Glen Campbell must be going to Kenny Roger's cosmetic surgeon, but man what a joy it is to hear him play guitar.

Haha, I never realized until now that that Hendrix Wild Thing quotes Strangers in the Night in the solo

pithfork (Hurting 2), Monday, 8 March 2010 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

Wow to that Bo Diddley track.

Hinklepicker, Monday, 8 March 2010 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

Would pay $$$ for a bootleg, DVD, VHS, whatever of that Bo Diddley show...

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 8 March 2010 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

More to the point... no matter how crappy, depressed, annoyed, upset I am with myself, everyone, existential or otherwise that Bo clip without fail kicks my ass and makes everything cool. I've got a copy of my laptop, but it also really needs to be in something labelled "In case of emergency, watch this"
