In other words, he should have been a model instead.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Of 13 tracks, I think the Neptunes have production/songwriting credit on 5-6 tops, Timbaland has 2-3, the rest are from various others, Brian McKnight etc. And in your rush to tedious, hackneyed puppet theories, you really shouldn't underestimate the efforts of the entire team on this, either. There are multitudes behind the scenes!

Now, what's driving me nuts is that I can't get hold of a full version of the Puffy-produced track Love Don't Love Me, which was left off the ablum and sounds totally badass in the snippets I have been able to find.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the Timbalake crack was kind of funny.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

geir, maybe when someone says that they like the justin timberlake album you should presume that what they mean is that when they put the album released under the name justin timberlake into their stereo they enjoy the sound that comes out, regardless of who made it...
the fact that you believe the album should be credited to someone else shouldn't make a difference to a judgement of the music, its a separate issue...

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

also, ben, what did it say in the national enquirer?
i'm amazed at how fucked up and creepy the video is as it is...

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The call and response part of "Senorita" is cute, but I'm shocked grown adults are calling it amazing (Xgau's review is so embarassingly affectionate I'd almost assume he was a chickenhawk). You ever seen the original Nutty Professor? At his worst Timberlake sounds like Buddy Love did when he started turning back into the professor. LADEEEES! OH, LADEEES!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

also, does Pharrell sing on the chorus of "Rock Your Body." I know Timbie's lip syncing all of it in the video (and it could be him) but the part about grabbing all the girls on the floor REALLY sounds like Mr. Williams. That's what I assumed when I got the album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like the brash confidence of this album epitomized by the call-and-response part that was mentioned above--it fits beautifully into the song. I don't much care what JT may or may not be like IRL as I think he's a reasonably good actor here; the personas he adapts are convincing and compelling for as long as the songs are playing.

I even like the treacly ballads, for one thing because they mean that the record is true to its models (ahem "Lady in My Life"). The new single (is it called "Rock Your Body"?) is a straight-up Off the Wall homage but there's something different about the rhythm section--figuring out what that something is has been my task in my free moments so far this week.

4mateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I don't quite get why people rave about that bit in Senorita (tho I love the song in general) I think it's meant to be a little tongue in cheek, or at worst, just goofy.

I don't hear Pharrell on Rock Your Body.

I can't believe I am relating this, but according to the National Enquirer (or the Star, or whoever), Ben Affleck had a brief thing with Britney in the early days of his romance with J.Lo and he told Timberlake about it. Hence, if you will, the line in the song about "I heard it from him."

Also noone has mentioned that the Basement Jaxx remixes of Like I Love You make Justin's voice sound even weirder, in a very cool way.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

doesn't being true to your models remind the audience of the much better artists they could be listening to? Especially when you're Stevie Wonder homage contains the line "you're out of this world except you're not green."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

justin isn't so attractive.

he has writing and 'vocal arrangement'credits on all the songs.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh ooh ooh - must download basement jaxx remix of like i luv ewe, esp. since it's neptunes meet rendez-vu as is

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

and the timbalake crack was pretty good

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

All hail Ned fucking Raggett.

That is all.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 24 April 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin Timberlake is one of the first boys to play on 'lolita' sexuality. It's great! I like his songs, they're okay. They're almost straightforward enough to be meaningless and archetypal.

bedroom, Thursday, 24 April 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew - where was it on sale?
(haha trick question - I'm waiting for thee LIMITED EDITION. What will the bonus be? Xtina had makeup (!!!), P!nk & Avril had diaries . . . what do you reckon? Anyone have any info on this?)

(also, Andrew - VISIT ME if you want to hear Like I Love You - I accidentally got the promo from Real Groovy instead of the single).

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 24 April 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Well now. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 April 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bedroom is right, alot of timberlake's mag covers do give off a larry clark vibe

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 24 April 2003 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

the one basement jaxx remix of 'like i love you' that i heard was somewhat rub.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 24 April 2003 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone needs to make a Thomberlake bootleg, like, this minute now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 April 2003 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont think Radiohead are big on releasing acapellas for club DJs sadly

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Ess it was on- VINYL! Still pretty quick turnaround, I don't think his credibility thing has quite worked here, bummer.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG is right. Timberlake is rubbish. But his rubbishness would be more acceptable to me if he was really attractive. His looks are a myth; he's bozo pug.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinefox I thought so too but the whole Kids vibe works really well! Someone must agree with me on this! Nicole???

Also he looks super-silly on the new Face cover ==> return to the eighties definitely.

All of the singles are dancefloor monsters, although none of them are really as exciting as they often get credit for being.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
i got a copy of the album the other day
undecided yet,but some of it is as good as i hoped it would be and some of it doesn't really do anything for me
i don't really like r'n'b ballads though
and steve, nice work on the last night recommendation,it is really good...i might post a few more thoughs about the album as it continues

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing else sounds really like paint it black

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

in an eerily creepily kind of way

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

he sounds like he's trying to sound like missy on right for me

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing else sounds really like paint it black

what is this about?

brian badword (badwords), Sunday, 11 May 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, the song "nothing else" by justin timberlake sounds really like "paint it black" by the rolling stones
i probably should have made that clearer

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oh. i was hoping it was a bonus track or something i didn't have.

that's a pretty far out connection, btw.

brian badword (badwords), Sunday, 11 May 2003 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

try listening to it while thinking of paint it black

its not the whole thing, just the first verse (i think,i'm listening to something else now),specifically the vocals and the noises in the background...

robin (robin), Sunday, 11 May 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i understand - the cadence (if that's the right term?) of the verses - but i wouldn't have ever heard it if you hadn't made the connection.

you're right, in a far out sense, or it's far out that you're right.

brian badword (badwords), Sunday, 11 May 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i have no idea what this means

The Reverend, Thursday, 9 December 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

same here

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 9 December 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

It's divination using a bunch of corny fan-made Timberlake drawings. It doesn't have to make sense.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

hahahahaa

teledyldonix, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 June 2011 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

Just a thought.

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 June 2011 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

agreed

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 2 June 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Agreed. When I was watching his SNL appearance, it kind of startled me to realize that, for such a mega-star, he's only released two albums in the decade since he left N'Sync.

did you all see the deleted SNL sketch on Hulu where he was playing Mozart? very pertinent to this turn in conversation

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Thursday, 2 June 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

No! But I really want to see it now.
