so weird that so many of my favourite joints right now are nicki or nicki-featuring tracks, but apart from "shakin' it 4 daddy" i'd consider these crossover radio hits pretty inessential

if anyone has doubted her lady gaga complex, nicki has supposedly hired gaga's management
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:05 (fourteen years ago) link
tbh minaj has never worn, said or done anything that struck me as obviously gaga-esque or gaga inspired
― ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:29 (fourteen years ago) link
most of it still feels totally wayne-derived or out of the missy/left eye/da brat wacky female rapper playbook
― ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:30 (fourteen years ago) link
the rigid fembot thing reminds me a lot of how gaga poses/acts on stage
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:33 (fourteen years ago) link
when has gaga actually done rigid fembot moves, i can't think of any examples. that seems more the province of beyonce imo.

maybe i'm being poisoned by proximity

also all the valley girl voices and harajuku girl stuff are clearly gwen stefani, who's really patient zero for a lot of the goofy female star stuff going on in pop the last few years

it's a gagafication, clap, clap bravo
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 08:02 (fourteen years ago) link
Actually it raises the question, to what extent has Gaga been influenced by the aforementioned high-profile female rappers of the 90s/00s? Like it seems a pretty reasonable thing to interrogate, esp. re Lil' Kim and Missy, but I haven't run across anyone writing about that. Are people just more comfortable linking her up to Peaches or whatever indie electro type person, or has Gaga herself emphasized other lines of influence? (Or, I guess, is the connection all in my head?)
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link
sorry, i guess that really belongs in Gagathread - - - will repaste.

kinda crossing over w/ the bedrock thread w/ this post but since it's about "my chick bad" i figured it might as well go in here
anyway the spring break performance of "my chick bad" is so funny
http://www.musicistheheartofoursoul.com/2010/03/mtv-spring-break-2010-performances.html
first of all, for some reason minaj is yelling her verse and it seems like she can't really find her footing in these massive heels, so it comes off like an amy poehler parody or something
also the best part is that her fembot routine gets thrown off by people accidentally batting beach balls at her

ok the line on the lemonade remix where she threatens to "put this pussy on your chipped tooth" is so much worse than the sideburns line ever was
― surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 14:55 (fourteen years ago) link
there's no such line on the remix i have?
i'm in a tricky little moodi trick these little dudesi tell 'em that i love 'em but i never really dosee i like pretty shoesand i like pretty minksand i like sightseeing the pyramids and the sphinx
she's not as good as trey songz or fabolous, who are both GREAT on it, but her verse is fine
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link
also this seems not to be the thread where "massive attack" was discussed, but i definitely love that song. and the video.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link
It's actually on the Fabolous - "For the Money" remix. That "Lemonade" verse is boring and fuck off with the "minks," too.
― Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh, and the complete couplet is “I told Fab 'Get that Michael Knight KITT Coupe' / before I put this pussy on your chipped tooth."

#65 on the R&B chart, which is to say not really
― surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link
Mmmassive Attack gets discussed on I'm Nicki Minaj, Nicki Lewinsky, Nicki the Ninja, Nicki the Boss, Nicki the Harajuku Barbie ... prob should lock one or the other of these threads since they're both effectively open-ended Minaj-watch.
― Doctor Casino, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link
locking seems excessive, but i'm fine w/ the other one being the default thread in the future. i just revived this one because this is the thread where we talked about the 'sideburns' line.
― surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link
"my chick bad" is my jam until nicki comes in, I mean not that luda's verses are amazing but the "nightmare on elm street and guess who's playing freddy!" thing is like a whole nother level of get this shit off my radio now
― history tayne (crüt), Friday, 14 May 2010 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link
the thing about that line is that it would work for me alright if she didn't also say "friday the 13th and guess who's playing jason," putting both those references in the first in the exact same construction feels so amateurish and lazy.
i have a grudging respect for the uncompromising schtick overload of "Massive Attack" but "Your Love" is just such a lame-ass retreat in the other direction.
― itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link
also imo Nicki is really the lest of "My Chick Bad"'s problems, shitty beat, shitty hook, worst Luda verses ever

emilys: "If Luda's chick does stuff that he can't put in words, why did he think a rap would be the best way to express his feelings?"
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 May 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link
the best thing about "my chick bad" is nicki in the video
i really unapologetically love "massive attack" - i love how it takes a few listens to arrange itself in your head but once it does you pretty much grow to love every aspect of it
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:39 (fourteen years ago) link
what do you think of the tinny timid generic "Your Love" though
― itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:44 (fourteen years ago) link
is that the terrible autotune one? unless it's been changed significantly (completely) since the version i heard last year, i dislike it v much
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:45 (fourteen years ago) link
"Massive Attack" is a lot stickier than I would have expected the first time I heard it. I have "Mmmassive attack! Mmmmassive attack!" and "Tom toms over here bigger than a monster/ Blak! Blak! Blaka!" stuck in my head all the time, which doesn't quite translate into me wanting to listen to it.

it almost erases any goodwill luda had built up in the last year and a half or so doing remixes and stuff

― you better check that sausage before you put it in the rofl (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 14 May 2010 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link
I have the same relationship with "Massive Attack" that Rev does, I think. The problem is that so little of the stuff between those headsticky points is particularly memorable.
"My Chick Bad," yeah... it's not the worst thing I've ever heard, but it's sorta uninspired and you'd think Ludacris of all people could do so much more with that premise! The references are really blah - she always brings a racket like Venus and Serena? Okay, yeah, I get the joke but is that as bad as your chick gets, Luda? Compare to "What's Your Fantasy?" and there's been a real loss of energy.
I maintain that it should have been a battle song with another male rapper, with them arguing over whose chick was badder... and then we get to Nicki's verse and we realize that she's BOTH their chicks! Or something.
