but my blood wants to say hello to you!

Ew, put that away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that how the US reacted to The Fragile?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The true test of a nin fan is if you can stomach The Purest Feeling demos. (Lately, I really like the live "acoustic" version of 'the Big Come Down' floating around the net.)

(You mean aside from that whole debut at number 2 thing, right?)

TrentLuv (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

that wasn't the US that put it at no. 2, that was the trench coat mafia. The US is what made it slide down the charts immediately after, which actually I thought was kind of unfair, cuz I thought that We Should Be Together song was fine proto-Linkin Parkage (at time I would have called it "middle school angstage" but same diff).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Purest Feeling demos

MAAAAAAAAAYBE, maybe JUST ONCE, I'll GET what's COMING to MEEEEEEEEEE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who can listen to "A Warm Place" and feel nothing, has no soul and should bugger the eff off. S'there.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That includes David Bowie feeling "I thought I wrote Crystal Japan," of course. ";-)" (Also: La Mer is nother great trent instrumental!!)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who can listen to "A Warm Place" and feel nothing, has no soul and should bugger the eff off. S'there

well that includes me, so here we are.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

filler¿ tell me what nin songs you consider filler. please. anthony.
skip the fragile tho.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather listen to "vletrmx21" to "A Warm Place," thanks.

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Great bad, particularly "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Closer". "The Fragile" would possibly belong in that thread about turning an average album into a classic one by removing half the tracks...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't, Dyson, its been ages since I've listened to 'em. But I didn't even like "March Of The Pigs" so don't mind me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

In Praise of.....the BROKEN e.p. by Nine Inch Nails

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, you know that thumping sound that makes Closer so much the sexy? It's a beat! Rhythm is good!

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a special honorary mention should be given to Maxwell's cover of "Closer," which while overlong, does find him adding lines about how you and him should "do the freak-ay."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just recently heard Maxwell's cover of Kate Bush's emotionally celestial "This Woman's Work," and he should be pistol whipped into blubbering submission and forced to drink a thermos of his own urine for that particular particular affront.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, particular!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, he totally calls her "the bomb" on his Unplugged EP. Respect was given and respect is due!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

just his own urine, alex¿ you're getting soft.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And for that alone, he should have his vomit-drenched ashes spread on unhallowed ground and then fertilized with the rancid dung of an incontinent warthog.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, yeah. The Maxwell cover is great.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I still love NIN. This is probably how I would rate them:

1. Perfect Drug single / Lost Highway soundtrack (probably in my top 5 songs ever)
2. Broken
3. Fixed
4. Pretty Hate Machine
5. The Downward Spiral

I do not rate The Fragile; it is okay, but I do not own it and would not ever like to hear it again. And Things Falling Apart should be DESTROYED DESTROYED DESTROYED! omg soooo bad.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I forgot to put Further Down the Spiral! That should go after PHM, before TDS.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The two "remixes" on Further Down the Spiral are the only Aphex Twin other than Windowlicker that I can stand to hear anymore.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

See how NIN makes me indulge my rockism!?!?

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You forgot to mention Still -- to which I listen right now. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never owned the Fragile, but someone's copy is usually around. Whenever I put it on, I usually think 'meh' at first, then there are always some fantastic tracks that I've completely forgotten about.

I agree that the Perfect Drug is definitely one of their best tunes (damn, Trent would have become a jungle producer...).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard Still Ned, is it good?

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it -- it's theoretically the 'low key' album, not quite NIN unplugged obv, but the reworkings of older songs aim at generally more stripped down/slower takes. Personally I think the version of "And All That Could Have Been" here is the keeper.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been able to get past Reznor, whose voice and lyrics I find just plain awful (actually this is my problem with basically 90% of what got released on Wax Trax/TVT.) I imagine that instrumental versions of some of this stuff could be okay, but frankly I can't imagine ever really caring enough to find out if such a thing existed.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Purest Feeling demos

D'oh! I paid way too much for that disc back in high school & upon listening even as a massive fan was like.. WTF???? However I did make a profit reselling it several years later to some random NIN obsessive in Japan.

I think "March of the Pigs" is my favorite moment of theirs. The video's pretty funny..

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that Maxwell cover is horrible. I had such high hopes too. :( A Trent produced Maxwell version would be sweet as hell I bet.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I never got into the Fragile. I sort've gave up after "the Perfect Drug" (which is, admittedly, fantastic...especially the drum break.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

_The Fragile_ is 100% worth getting if only for "We're In This Together Now", "Into The Void", and "The Wretched".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that Maxwell cover is horrible. I had such high hopes too. :(

B-but what about the double time, 4 on the floor gospel bit?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fragile tour was pretty good. When I saw him in NYC, Manson came out onstage to sing "Starfuckers, Inc." and the crowd went wild, which was kind of funny. I own a lot of his stuff (all three full-length albums, the live thing, and Broken) but I never ever feel the urge to actually listen to any of it.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

When I saw him in NYC, Manson came out onstage to sing "Starfuckers, Inc." and the crowd went wild, which
was kind of funny.

That performance is a hidden track on the DVD. Good stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow my copy of The Downward Spiral disappeared a couple of years ago. I think the song I miss most of all is "Ruiner". One of these days I'll burn a copy and leave off "Heresy".

While I liked it quite a bit when it first came out, The Fragile has really grown on me in the last few years, mostly for the subtlety of the instrumental tracks. Also, the older I get, the less I'm able to stomach Trent's sometimes gratuitous use of the F-word. The Fragile isn't as marred as the previous stuff, save for the obvious exception.

boldbury, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Tent's starting to get up in years himself.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

>That performance is a hidden track on the DVD.

Ah. I was wondering why it wasn't included on the live album (I've never seen the DVD). Figured it was a natural to turn up someplace.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

B-but what about the double time, 4 on the floor gospel bit?

Yeah, that was neat for like 2 seconds. I don't really like that live r&b vibe of totally ditching song structure for gospel clap alongs. I would so love for Trent to turn nin into a Golden Palominos type thing where he does everything but the vocals. That the rumored Aaliyah collaboration never happened is a shame.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, that explains it, I'm in favor of ditching pretty much anything at any moment for gospel clap alongs.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

nine inch nails - bleedthrough (2004)
is up on slsk as of now. from the first two tracks i've listened to i hope it is a FAKE.

william (william), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

When did you start seeing bleedthrough tracks on soulseek? I havent heard of a leak.

JesusMaryChain, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i've had it on my slsk wishlist since december.i get a couple of hits each time i'm on.Arcane Anathema is one user name that has supposedly all the tracks. again though...not sure that they are *real* nin tracks.

william (william), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It is probably a fake, don't people pull that sort of thing all the time on NIN releases? Let us know if it's legit though, I admit I'm still curious to see what they are up to.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, so this is the sequel to Buttfuck Parlor Time at long last.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe they are the hidden tracks from Impossible Pain.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
This is a rather strange industrial rock supergroup line up !

Black Light Burns, which consists of Wes Borland (Big Dumb Face, Limp Bizkit) Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails), Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), and Josh Freese (The Vandals, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails).

the fantastic nine inch noize performance mostly just has me now thinking about the best thing nin have done in recent years

ufo, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 01:16 (two months ago)

excellent choice

however, per mr. reznor’s nomenclature, that is a soundtrack by the two members of nine inch nails and alan sparhawk/bj burton

I get why he pushes on that but it’s also fun to show up to the NIN show and tell the person to your side that you hope they do songs from the Pixar movie Soul

mh, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 01:26 (two months ago)

I liked the Reznor+Noize remixed Challengers soundtrack on a long walk. And the Reznor/Ross score to the forgotten Sam Mendes film Empire of Light is interesting because it’s shamelessly beautiful without any edges, just going for pretty.

Come On, (Eazy), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:05 (two months ago)

(And I should say I’ve done a 180 on NIN, at least their 21st-century incarnation, after basically disliking them as much as I disliked Requiem for a Dream, for similar reasons.)

Come On, (Eazy), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:06 (two months ago)

archive.org link is dead :(
Sorry i missed it.

fajita seas, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:23 (two months ago)

they were doing "(you made it feel like) home" from the reznor/ross bones and all score on the most recent tour!

ufo, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:51 (two months ago)

"a minute to breathe" too!

during the 2013/2014 tours they did a few reznor/ross tracks too, though those were instrumentals

ufo, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 02:54 (two months ago)

i really wanted reznor's falsetto "perfect" to jump out on "closer". at least it was audible. a sudden falsetto note is really hard to project at the same level i imagine?

He’s 60, you lose your head voice as you age

This might be getting somewhat parasocial— but part of what I loved so much about this performance was the husband/wife element, and how it recontextualized the unknown “you” that is the subject of so much of the depresso Downward Spiral era stuff— all of it, really. The salvation is onstage and a part of the show and a part of the narrative. These songs flipped from being “I’m 26 and depressed and drug addicted and want to die” into a new “I made it through all that and now I’m a happy father of six” victory lap

the gay of hormuz (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 03:32 (two months ago)

@fajita seas, I've sent you a message.

wipes chooser (unperson), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 17:35 (two months ago)

Also, a PR statement from Reznor:

The creative fulfillment of working on the Challengers and TRON scores with Boys Noize led me to think that including him in the Peel It Back tour could be an interesting way to express NIN in more purely electronic terms live – a concept I’ve wanted to explore for some time. The result was so much fun for us we felt it was worth expanding and formalizing in some way.

On a whim I mentioned it would be cool to play a whole set as Nine Inch Noize in the Sahara tent at Coachella. Careful what you wish for…the next thing I knew we were designing a whole new show to present in the way it deserved.

There’s no surprise tour announcement – this Saturday is it. I’m taking Sunday off and excited to be working on new Nine Inch Nails music Monday – I’ll see you when I come up for air.

We recorded this album all over the place – some of it’s live, some in studios, hotels, planes, etc. We had a lot of fun revisiting these songs and hope you enjoy. Listen LOUD.

wipes chooser (unperson), Wednesday, 15 April 2026 17:38 (two months ago)

Hm, so essentially the Coachella set IS the album. (Not complaining, I just wonder how much different it'll sound in the end.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 18:12 (two months ago)

(Not complaining, I just wonder how much different it'll sound in the end.)

this is like seeing JUSTICE live vs JUSTICE studio.
The live material is insane and noisey and so so good,
the studio releases, are a lot more "polite".

(the same could be said for Adrian Sherwood actually ... )

mark e, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 18:36 (two months ago)

Well now I'm listening and...I think the album really is the live show! Which is great!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 April 2026 04:07 (one month ago)

Ah okay in rereading the press guff it's a mix of live and studio. Still I wouldn't've minded if they just released the set!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 April 2026 04:08 (one month ago)

it's pretty much a live album, though it's not all from the coachella set (even though it's just the same tracks - i would have loved to have the version of "sin" they were doing on tour too, for instance)

missed opportunity to call it As Live As You Need Me To Be

ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 04:48 (one month ago)

Not on Qobuz in my time zone yet.

wipes chooser (unperson), Friday, 17 April 2026 04:54 (one month ago)

missed opportunity to call it As Live As You Need Me To Be

the live cassette from two weeks ago was called As Live As You Needed Me To Be (and has Sin on it)

uploading this content requires perseveration (sic), Friday, 17 April 2026 08:00 (one month ago)

that was an unofficial thing wasn't it

ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 08:01 (one month ago)

yeah (probably) but just as well there’s no clash! and it makes more sense for the one that actually is a live comp

uploading this content requires perseveration (sic), Friday, 17 April 2026 11:42 (one month ago)

saw 'em live last year and this shit went so fucking hard so I'm stoked to have an audio souvenir.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 17 April 2026 12:22 (one month ago)

The show you were at might be available here (the band is OK with this site) - https://ninlive.com/recordings

StanM, Friday, 17 April 2026 12:26 (one month ago)

i'd be very happy if the next nin album sounds like this

ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 13:14 (one month ago)

i'm throwing this version of "parasite" in my next dj set

ivy., Friday, 17 April 2026 13:31 (one month ago)

Listening now; this is exactly what I hoped for.

wipes chooser (unperson), Friday, 17 April 2026 14:33 (one month ago)

my favourites here are "heresy" which just rules and "the warning" which absolutely needed that coda

most pointless are "closer" and "as alive as you need me to be"

ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 20:23 (one month ago)

it's pretty much a live album, though it's not all from the coachella set (even though it's just the same tracks - i would have loved to have the version of "sin" they were doing on tour too, for instance)

Not a live album at all, to my ear - yes, there's crowd noise here and there, but it's clearly being used as a sonic element, like the Butthole Surfers did on "John E. Smoke":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uhmOTnF92M

wipes chooser (unperson), Saturday, 18 April 2026 19:14 (one month ago)

some of it sounds pretty much identical to coachella last weekend

ufo, Saturday, 18 April 2026 23:19 (one month ago)

someone on the hoffman boards stated confidently it was sourced from that, which is a pretty quick turnaround. I didn't see the coachella set; but this is close to what the NoizeBoyz set was like when I saw him last year.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 19 April 2026 04:08 (one month ago)

I think they are doing some live manipulation but the occam's razor here is that the triggered electronic instruments etc are not being twiddled that much and it reads as identical because it's being replayed

that fan bootleg from a couple weeks back that may or may not have used intercepted feeds off the IEM broadcasts for the band was pretty close, but wow did they not doing any real mixing. I'd be pissed if I were TR because it lacked any real vocal effects, vocals too high in the mix for NIN, lots of aesthetic errors

mh, Monday, 20 April 2026 01:59 (one month ago)

i was largely working off the vocals, which for some tracks are directly from coachella week 1 but for other tracks they're not. they are clearly doing something live because there's a video of them doing "sin" where they have a bunch of technical difficulties and have to restart the song

ufo, Monday, 20 April 2026 05:17 (one month ago)

oh yeah, I think they're doing a lot of the stuff live and it's just really tight, barring technical difficulties

mh, Monday, 20 April 2026 17:49 (one month ago)

I love the dialectic of "it sounds perfect because it is pre-taped" vs "it sounds perfect because they are just really tight," lol

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 April 2026 19:12 (one month ago)

I know I posted it upthread somewhere, but I saw the band once in a small-ish place, and for the first two songs the house sound was not working, and anything you could hear at all was what was coming directly from what was on the stage (amps, monitors, etc.). Once Trent realized what was happening - essentially a really intense but virtually silent pantomime of rage - he got extra pissed and everyone had to leave the stage for a reset.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 April 2026 19:15 (one month ago)

You can hear (or not hear!) it happening here!

I’ve been thrifting for records for decades, and every once in a while, I find something really special. This is the tale of one of the most special records I’ve ever found.
Trent Reznor, of the band Nine Inch Nails, grew up in Mercer, PA, which is the town where I live. He went to Mercer High School, and he played in the 5M Marching Band and Jazz Band, in which my kids have also played. Trent has gone on to become a very famous songwriter and performer, and he’s also won a stack of Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes for some of his film soundtrack scores.
Recently, I thrifted a copy of a Mercer High School marching band and jazz band LP from the early 1980s. On the side 2 record label, under a song called “Pressure Cooker,” is the name Trent Reznor, featured as a soloist on tenor saxophone.
This is quite possibly the first time Trent Reznor was featured on a professional recording. Until now, there has been no reference on the internet (at least, not that I can find) that even acknowledges the existence of this record. So I made a little video to share this rare recording of a young (11th grade?) Trent Reznor playing a sweet jazz solo on the sax. I’m very happy to be able to share it with you. 🎶🎷

Damn I grew up 10 min from there. I thrift for records sometimes in the surrounding towns but never thought to go there. Amazing.
