like the only way i know popular songs exist is via what people say and link on the internet and that makes me feel so disconnected and kills me inside

feel u dude, I haven't had a car or tv since september. it's a weird feeling.

not being glib or anything, but u guys should get like a little walkman or clock radio or one of those waterproof dealies that can go in the shower, imo a few minutes a day of radio listening is nice. tbh i don't know why FM radios aren't part of the package with iPods, i know why include a dead technology with the hot new thing etc. but it seems like a no-brainer to me.

some dude, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

Not really a "no-brainer" since Apple wants you to fill your iPod with songs you pay them money for, not listen to for free. But I totally agree w/ your premise. Kicking back with the FM radio now and then can be a good thing.

"my chick bad" = sorely underrated in this poll

HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that song is all kinds of ugh

some dude, Thursday, 4 March 2010 00:14 (sixteen years ago)

iPod Nanos come with radio now...

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Thursday, 4 March 2010 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

oh, huh my ipod does have radio. didn't notice that before.

the Mariah single is a snooze.

Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 March 2010 03:53 (sixteen years ago)

so weird that so many of my favourite joints right now are nicki or nicki-featuring tracks, but apart from "shakin' it 4 daddy" i'd consider these crossover radio hits pretty inessential

I MISS THE RADIO IN CAR

yeahhh (surm), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

i feel u -- but yall need to get one (1) clock radio if you have access to pop/hip-hop & r&b radio in a major market

HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

i have one actually. i can't believe i haven't though of this before. 6pm pop radio hour? this is like a new ritual, i can feel it.

yeahhh (surm), Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

duh!

HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

if anyone has doubted her lady gaga complex, nicki has supposedly hired gaga's management

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:05 (sixteen years ago)

tbh minaj has never worn, said or done anything that struck me as obviously gaga-esque or gaga inspired

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:29 (sixteen years ago)

most of it still feels totally wayne-derived or out of the missy/left eye/da brat wacky female rapper playbook

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:30 (sixteen years ago)

the rigid fembot thing reminds me a lot of how gaga poses/acts on stage

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:33 (sixteen years ago)

when has gaga actually done rigid fembot moves, i can't think of any examples. that seems more the province of beyonce imo.

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:36 (sixteen years ago)

maybe i'm being poisoned by proximity

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:39 (sixteen years ago)

also all the valley girl voices and harajuku girl stuff are clearly gwen stefani, who's really patient zero for a lot of the goofy female star stuff going on in pop the last few years

xpost

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:40 (sixteen years ago)

when gaga's on the charts
boy you gon think
you gon think she invented quirk

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:55 (sixteen years ago)

it's a gagafication, clap, clap bravo

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 08:02 (sixteen years ago)

Actually it raises the question, to what extent has Gaga been influenced by the aforementioned high-profile female rappers of the 90s/00s? Like it seems a pretty reasonable thing to interrogate, esp. re Lil' Kim and Missy, but I haven't run across anyone writing about that. Are people just more comfortable linking her up to Peaches or whatever indie electro type person, or has Gaga herself emphasized other lines of influence? (Or, I guess, is the connection all in my head?)

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:14 (sixteen years ago)

sorry, i guess that really belongs in Gagathread - - - will repaste.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:16 (sixteen years ago)

kinda crossing over w/ the bedrock thread w/ this post but since it's about "my chick bad" i figured it might as well go in here

anyway the spring break performance of "my chick bad" is so funny

http://www.musicistheheartofoursoul.com/2010/03/mtv-spring-break-2010-performances.html

first of all, for some reason minaj is yelling her verse and it seems like she can't really find her footing in these massive heels, so it comes off like an amy poehler parody or something

also the best part is that her fembot routine gets thrown off by people accidentally batting beach balls at her

2 guys 1 jag (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

ok the line on the lemonade remix where she threatens to "put this pussy on your chipped tooth" is so much worse than the sideburns line ever was

surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

there's no such line on the remix i have?

i'm in a tricky little mood
i trick these little dudes
i tell 'em that i love 'em but i never really do
see i like pretty shoes
and i like pretty minks
and i like sightseeing the pyramids and the sphinx

she's not as good as trey songz or fabolous, who are both GREAT on it, but her verse is fine

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

also this seems not to be the thread where "massive attack" was discussed, but i definitely love that song. and the video.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

It's actually on the Fabolous - "For the Money" remix. That "Lemonade" verse is boring and fuck off with the "minks," too.

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and the complete couplet is “I told Fab 'Get that Michael Knight KITT Coupe' / before I put this pussy on your chipped tooth."

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

IT'S GUCCI

dyªº (dyao), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not sure what i think about massive attack yet; i still want to hear her sound good and that might be the track that I can grudgingly commit to? not sure yet.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

4got that song existed -- is it getting any radio play outside of hot 97

yo gotti or notti (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

#65 on the R&B chart, which is to say not really

surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

Mmmassive Attack gets discussed on I'm Nicki Minaj, Nicki Lewinsky, Nicki the Ninja, Nicki the Boss, Nicki the Harajuku Barbie ... prob should lock one or the other of these threads since they're both effectively open-ended Minaj-watch.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

locking seems excessive, but i'm fine w/ the other one being the default thread in the future. i just revived this one because this is the thread where we talked about the 'sideburns' line.

surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

"my chick bad" is my jam until nicki comes in, I mean not that luda's verses are amazing but the "nightmare on elm street and guess who's playing freddy!" thing is like a whole nother level of get this shit off my radio now

history tayne (crüt), Friday, 14 May 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

the thing about that line is that it would work for me alright if she didn't also say "friday the 13th and guess who's playing jason," putting both those references in the first in the exact same construction feels so amateurish and lazy.

i have a grudging respect for the uncompromising schtick overload of "Massive Attack" but "Your Love" is just such a lame-ass retreat in the other direction.

itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

also imo Nicki is really the lest of "My Chick Bad"'s problems, shitty beat, shitty hook, worst Luda verses ever

itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

emilys: "If Luda's chick does stuff that he can't put in words, why did he think a rap would be the best way to express his feelings?"

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 May 2010 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

the best thing about "my chick bad" is nicki in the video

i really unapologetically love "massive attack" - i love how it takes a few listens to arrange itself in your head but once it does you pretty much grow to love every aspect of it

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

what do you think of the tinny timid generic "Your Love" though

itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

is that the terrible autotune one? unless it's been changed significantly (completely) since the version i heard last year, i dislike it v much

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

"Massive Attack" is a lot stickier than I would have expected the first time I heard it. I have "Mmmassive attack! Mmmmassive attack!" and "Tom toms over here bigger than a monster/ Blak! Blak! Blaka!" stuck in my head all the time, which doesn't quite translate into me wanting to listen to it.

i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Friday, 14 May 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)
