Fever Ray deserving winner imo. Such a great album. Even better than The Knife.

Fever Ray @ #1 just redeemed this poll for me... and made up for the song-you-hear-at-Mervyn's-while-you-shop-for-a-training-bra topping the 2009 songs poll.

I'm listening to those Electrik Red tunes and shaking my head. Sooo bad. Who listens to this besides sweaty white hipster boys? I guess I could see them getting spins at gay clubs.

Here's comments from an actual black woman ;) --

"They're cute but that song is boring as hell... That video is kinda dumb. I can just see a bunch of cute drunk black hipster girls toilet dancing at roday now. hahahaha. Dumb name too. They're just hot and that's about all. They gotta be midwestern. Like from ohio or something."

*watches an older video for "So Good"*

"They look completely different. That must've been before their agent told them to lose weight. They're way skinnier in the other video. Which sucks. Now even black girls have to be emaciated. BOOOOO."

Me - "They do have decent booties."

"True true."

Goddamnit, I left this off my ballot "strategically" because I thought it had no shot at placing. Was up there in my top 15 or so albums this year. If I'd known it would end up #59, and that my vote would simultaneously put it over the top *and* bump Gucci Mane out of the top 50... wow, huge missed opportunity.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 26 February 2010 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

kev, this is the same guy who wrote:

The trend for normally sensible critics to give accolades to crappy mainstream rap albums continues, with Jay-Z, UGK, Ghostface Killah and Kanye West topping lists. You'd think from them that hip-hop has stopped evoloving and is curled up waiting to die. And please stop encouraging Lil' Wayne. Hitting one clever lyrical turn for every ten raps does not equal brilliance. Soon the market will be flooded by amateur tapes of rappers throwing every rhyme that falls off the top of their heads with no self editing whatsoever, because they know those white critics will eat anything up. Kanye West isn't totally horrible, as he always manages a couple decent singles. But if you actually listen to what else is out there, there's really no excuse. Artists like Dälek, El-P, Aesop Rock, Shape of Broad Minds, Oh No, Busdriver and Cloud Cult are actually pushing the art of hip-hop to new horizons, chipping away at the untapped vast potential for sounds. Oh No dug into Lebanese, Italian and Greek psych rock, and it's only the tip of the iceberg. Pharoahe Monch, Brother Ali, Black Milk and Little Brother showed it's still possible to make accessible hip-hop that's still powerful and relevant. Saul Williams, well, he's like that crazy uncle who freestyles at the family picnics. He's a little embarrassing, but still he speaks the truth.

i like these results a lot. i really didn't think terius would have a shot at no 1 or electrik red would be top 5, so they both exceeded expectation; of course either at no 1 would've been ~pop champagne~ but i really love fever ray as well and that being no 1 felt inevitable from the start. really, voting for the entire top 6 feels really rather novel. and it's petty, but i love seeing anco, DPs and phoenix pushed down towards the lower half of the top 10 - like the trax list this list is just, like, this is why i post here!

fever ray benefited from coming out at the start of the year: i knew i admired it from the off, couldn't work out whether i loved it or not for the longest time. stopped listening to it completely in the summer, but when winter hit again, it felt so absolutely right. right now i think i might even prefer it, as a body of work, to silent shout.

i remember when OPM seemed like totally the on-it hipster choice; i really liked it at the time. but he's one of those artists whose later revealed flaws go back and infect the good stuff so much that i can't listen to it any more. not that it was anything close to my album of 2002 (trina's diamond princess bitchezz - i bet that'd do really well now).

lol @ the Actual Black Woman being called to pronounced judgement on Actual Black Women. it's sad.

2009 was such a fucking good year for music! i say this every year but 2009 really was special in so many ways.
