I mean, I wasn't 100% sure that Q&K was going to make the list, but...

Many would say the 1st Hole album was by far her best.

yeah i guess, though it's possible to prefer it but acknowledge that on just the songwriting level her later work was better

you just have to think-is it really like that a gucci mane mixtape would've gotten more votes than dj quik & kurupt?

Haven't really been following this poll, but dipped into the thread just now, and have to say A+ on the images, J0rdan.

Reminds me somehow of

thanks jay -- i really realized how retarded all of indie rock press is while scrolling through 300 identical, poorly shot photos of the dirty projectors guy + foreground PA

Animal Collective was my #1 and I don't care who knows it. I think they do a much better job of loops + noise + whatever else than the likes of Fuck Buttons (the nearest point of comparison on this list IMO, not all that GPDY nonsense), their songs actually go somewhere for starters.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:22 (fourteen years ago) link

also weren't didn't both djq&k hitz make the songs poll?

I see the point you're trying to make but this isn't really an "if A, then B" type situation.

NickB, that's a damn good #1 -- AC made my top ten, and we're probably talking top 3-4 vis a vis actual number of spins.

These are all great pics.

I don't think I voted for DJ Sprinkles because i'm pretty sure it was in my top ten for 2008. Great great great album, though I think it's odd how much people act like it's this realy distinct thing (okay the rants are, but leaving the rants aside) - the music is very much along the lines of what a lot of people on a kind of deep house/downtempo/broken beat/post-acid jazz axis were doing at the end of the 90s and beginning of the 00s - see for example the first (Ski) Oakenfull album which is tremendously underrated and very very similar. Maybe it's easy to forget this now. Anyway, that doesn't take away from the fact that it was def. top ten of 2008 for me.

I think I probably did vote for Taylor this time 'cos even though I picked it up in December '08 or so I underrated it at first and thought it was a let-down after the first album (did a total 180 on this, seeing her do the songs live for the first time early last year was a big help. Sadly her recent tour was like exactly the same show (okay by me) + Jesus-like posturing (um...).

ha, like in the screengrab of her.

how is dj sprinkles a 2008 album? iirc it didn't even leak until 2009. promos don't count!

xp

also, i think almost everyone i know who'd heard taylor's first album felt a bit let down by fearless (uh, kogan and cis, anyway) - i started with it and then went back to the debut though.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

DJ Sprinkles was released in Japan in '08, IIRC.

dylan's craggy larynx (jaymc), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

(initially - as far as i know kogan and cis have both come v much round to fearless)

I started my DJ Sprinkles thread on 13 November 2008. This was several weeks after grabbing it, which itself was several weeks after Pete Chambers emailed me to say "you gotta grab this awesome album which I'm surprised people aren't talking about more."

Mind you Pete visits Japan alot AFAIK.

and yeah, same as plaxico re: dj sprinkles

I think the highs are higher in many ways - or, rather, there's a kind of joyful country effervescence at times that I really like - but it's not as consistent. I think all you really need are "Tim McGraw", "Picture To Burn", "Cold As You", "Stay Beautiful", "Mary's Song (Oh My My)", "Should've Said No", "Our Song" and "Invisible".

Tim F, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:43 (fourteen years ago) link

so that leaves the dream, yeah yeah yeahs, the xx, electric red and fever ray?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

"picture to burn" - yes! actually jordan, if you haven't seen the video, go and do so immediately!

"so go and tell your friends i'm obsessive and crazy / that's fine, i'll tell mine you're gay"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:47 (fourteen years ago) link

"and if you come around sayin' sorry to me / my daddy's gonna show you how sorry you'll be"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:48 (fourteen years ago) link

WHAT I always thought it was "So go and tell your friends I'm obsessive and crazy / that's fine, you won't mind if I say... by the way... I HATE YOUR etc."

There's a real sass to some of those tracks which i think is missing on the second album which is a lot more earnest. I suspect because first time around she was writing more deliberately for a country audience. it has the odd effect of making the first album seem older (in terms of the age of the songwriter) than the second.

Tim F, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link

"Ain't got no time for tears / I'm just sitting here / planning my revenge / there's nothing stopping me / from goin' out / with ALL of YR BEST FRIENDS!"

Tim F, Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:53 (fourteen years ago) link

haha i think "you won't mind if i say" is the radio/video edit. yeah taylor's so clean-cut and princessy that she needs a radio edit at the age of 16

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

i love the way she slips into "burn, burn, burn baby burn" at the end

and yeah otm about how the country focus makes her seem older - or maybe rougher, more working class - on her debut

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i looove fearless but her debut mostly leaves me cold. i should revisit

lil surprised yyy's is top 5 but it has a lot of fans here i guess. i think it's boring tbh

Actually, I think a lot of people pissed their jeans over Taylor Swift, and many others.
