I probably would want to hear General Levy's "Diamonds & Pearls," but I still don't know which song on the mixtape is General Levy's "Incredible." Is it 17 (which I dubbed "some funky dubby thing") or is it 21 ("some junglish dance hall thing")? If the latter, then which track is Origin Unknown "Valley of the Shadows (31 Seconds)"? And who does song 7? (Sorry to be obtuse, if I'm missing something or not hearing where the lyrics give it away; I only got four hours of sleep last night.)

My favorite pop group ever is the Rolling Stones c. 1965, unless it's the Stooges in the early '70s. So I probably listen to pop in the wrong way too. But I can see how fans of "Sunshine Superman" and "Cruel Summer" and "Steal My Sunshine" and "Summertime" (the Fresh Prince number) - e.g., me - would like "LDN" too, even if they somehow manage to listen to pop in the right way. It has "summer song" written all over it. (Not guaranteed to break big on U.S. radio, however, since "CHR Rhythmic" and "rock" stations will probably steer clear, and calypso ska hasn't been breaking on CHR Pop since No Doubt changed its sound.)

Right, I get it: #20 is a mashup of the Origin Unknown track and one of Lily's own songs. And so I deduce that #21 is General Levy - which still leaves #s 7 and 17, unless one of you identified them upthread and I missed the identification.

A few of her lyrics make me wince actually... It's odd watching this thread develop knowing it's a fait accompli that she's going to be huge whatever you say.

She's alright, pleasant, cheery, a bit individual & doesn't blend into the background (production, personality or otherwise) like a majority of pop at the moment. I think she's going to be oversold relative to how good she actually is (see also: Arctic Monkeys) as a result of the otherwise drab state of English chart pop (that isn't some kind of house-dance) in general.

I dunno, I might just delete those mp3's and wait for the album. I think all of these songs are going to sound much better on that somehow. I think my favourite of hers might be "everything's just fine" actually. The lo-fi-ness already suits the 60's kitsch-en sink backing to a tee there.

Nah, I just think this is wrong. She has big potential over here (UK): she will get press because of her dad; she will get radio play because Radio 1 has the shits for novelty sounding stuff and everyone must get sick of turgid misery-rock soon; she will not have a career, but she will have a hit single for sure, and maybe a reasonable-selling album. OK doesn't mean much but it's better than nothing. I think what UK folks on here are hooked by is the crossover potential which e.g. Annie and MIA never really had.

The Lex's rant about Lily Allen in the early hours of this morning was very entertaining. I believe the words 'Aryan' and 'RacistJustice' were used, somewhat unsurprisingly.

I don't like any of this stuff really - it sort of reminds me of Feist with a more self-consciously fashionable slant. And surely everyone's cottoned onto cod-ska as the surefire way of showing off how diverse your influences are without alienating good old Johnny Recordbuyer?

I like the video actually, but mostly for the 'ooh, zooming around London' aspect. She is on top of Primrose Hill in one bit = none more Belle and Sebastian.

I know her press officer and really, he's got much better things to do than pseudoblog on MySpace (he is usually busy looking after Kylie and the PSBs). FWIW Keith Allen has kids by different mums, and Lily lives with her mum not far from me, in a normal neighbourhood.

What I do like is that she is already promising to be a gobby wee shite in interviews.

Ok, that's true... I guess it's a subjective thing. (round here) is less public than a MySpace page that has had over a million page views - also, it feels less dud if the artist in question has already had a career for a while (e.g. Nick Cave writing Scum about Nick Snow).

Haven't thought this one through, to be honest. Why do I feel it's not a smart move on her part, especially because her career is only starting, but it's awfully honest and endearing at the same time?

she's in the same vein as the streets, yes (i hate the streets! she is more like recent streets than opm, too), but i'm not hearing ANY dynamite (or indeed lina) in what she does at all.
