Feels >>>> Sung Tongs

However, I'm still waiting for an AC album with eight two-minute pop songs and two twelve-minute jam/drone pieces. Almost every track on the album seems to average the two extremes beautifully.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I like it, I think. It's odd how it's simultaneously moving towards a more "normal" direction and a weirder direction, but not on the same songs: the first two songs and the last song sound like AC playing indie pop songs, but the chunk in the middle sound like a spacier, less structured AC, more like Here Comes the Indian.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago) link

n/a is right, but sung tongs is WAY better because it all sounds exactly the same. for both recent albums, the first two songs are the poppiest, most accessible songs on the album, but ST just sounds so much more focused to me. i still just cant get a handle on feels yet. that said, "bees" is totally unfuckwithable (and incidentally sounds more like ST than most of feels).

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

sounds more like ST than most of feels

Which is why it bores me, I guess...

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

ST is riiiich and deeeeeep though - dont you people care about riiiiichness or deeeeeeeepth???

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i love feels without reservation. "banshee beat," people!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

(x-post)

ST is also sunshine and summer, where this record feels cloudy and autumn. The more I listen to Feels, the more disappointed I am. It almost doesn't sound like the same people, despite the fact that all the voices and bizarre, muddied noises are clearly from the same people. I can't for the life of me imagine preferring "Did You See the Words" to "Leaf House". "Leaf House" is like a deep smile put to music. It's inspiring. Feels just makes me regret things.

and besides, Feels sounds like a real backtrack as far as production goes, everything is less clear, less...explosive!

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

ST feels more autumnal to me, I think it's all the acoustic guitar. Feels is more wintery.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago) link

getting colder tho

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

"Grass" is very spring-y. It's even called "Grass."

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Never much cared for AC. Heard Sung Tongs a couple of times and couldn't get into it. Bought Feels on a whim and have been very pleased after just a few listens.

Dan Floss (Dan Floss), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 02:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Saw them tonight on NY Noise. They suck. The whole NY Noise show sucked. The guy from Ariel Pink looks like Andrew I noticed.

Zepp Floyd, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 03:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I've gotta say Feels is growing on me a lot - there aren't many bad tracks on it at all. Still, I'm gonna say Sung Tongs will probably always be my favourite. Something about Feels just makes AC sound all the more like human beings and in a strange way reveals a lot of flaws. With ST, you really were given the impression that the band was made up of mutants from an isolated peninsula on the other side of the world, singing in some kind of pidgen English and playing the kind of music that they'd grown up with all their lives in an outback bush somewhere. Feels is a great alternative American album but doesn't quite capture the otherworldly semi-logic of ST.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:02 (nineteen years ago) link

whereas i ultimately found ST to be front-loaded (and i concur with dave's assessment that the album was a tad 'goofy') Feels has a real emotional weight to it. and the back-half, while incredibly slooooow, is just stunning.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Saw them tonight on NY Noise. They suck.

they were fucking terrible the one time I saw them live as well. I just don't think they work live, or whatever it is they do live, I don't like it. the records are great though!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought they were great live -- but it sounds like it varies a lot from tour to tour.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Knitting Factory shows last year were incredible...the Irving Plaza show from January was almost painful...definitely hit or miss

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Friday, 28 October 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

and re: emotional weight...I don't think they'll top Winter's Love

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Friday, 28 October 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw the same show as kyle and they were pretty bad, kind of embarassing.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 October 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

this does not deplete how good I think Feels is though

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 October 2005 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
So I'm finally hearing "Grass" and the first minute was surprisingly powerful and beautiful. Finally, an Animal Collective song I could truly enjoy!

But then they started singing. Oh well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

thanks for that, dick.

Music critics listen to music funny.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 00:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeh, I wasn't talking about live. I saw their videos and they suck on recording. So I guess that means they suck live and on recording. Yay.

Zepp Floyd, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I would like to suck on some recording.

Does anybody have extra?

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't imagine not liking Feels. To me it sounds like some of the happiest (and most genuinely happy) music ever laid to tape.

Matt McEver (mattmc387), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 02:50 (eighteen years ago) link

i like their singing, but can understand why it would grate on some people.

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 04:55 (eighteen years ago) link

still listen to this album about once a week or so and it's still really good. it's like geogaddi in that you enjoy it more if you put it away for a while and then take it out again.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:12 (eighteen years ago) link

i agree. lately when i put it on it's quite enjoyable

held tony (held tony), Thursday, 20 July 2006 06:13 (eighteen years ago) link

It's pretty interesting that Scott Colburn, who engineered "Feels", is now recording the next Arcade Fire record, given that "Feels" had a bit of an affinity with that band on certain songs (esp. how the piano was used, to my ears), even though AC hadn't heard AF while making it...

Craig Dunsmuir (Craig D.), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i find that hard to believe. both bands must read pitchfork, no?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:54 (eighteen years ago) link

God, I love "Flesh Canoe."

...like a mushed banana on your tooth

"still listen to this album about once a week or so and it's still really good. it's like geogaddi in that you enjoy it more if you put it away for a while and then take it out again."

---I'm the exact opposite for this record. Haven't dusted it off since last fall. ----

kevin barking (arghargh), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I still can't get myself to like Flesh Canoe, Bees, and Daffy Duck, though. But still, I don't skip them.

Aditya (dan138zig), Friday, 21 July 2006 06:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, this record kind of blows, quite honestly. The live shows in Spring 05 were...well...I would say really fucking great. The album's production and compression are awful, and the overall feel of the songs is thus diminished. But the live sets? They are so so good.

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 21 July 2006 06:09 (eighteen years ago) link

solution: buy a cheaper record player

tom west (thomp), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago) link

one year passes...

my favourite of their albums

still haven't totally gotten over feeling slightly irked by long indie songs, but these songs are compelling and ambient. i keep going back to this album over all the others, and actually prefer that gentler, more restrained side to their music than the racier stuff...

no maybe sung tongs is the beginning of the end. it is unclear.

I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

but then sung tongs has mouth wooed her which is in many ways a whole new beginning for everything and also leaf house which is an ideal denouement for a lot of other things which do not get included in the everything upbrella group

I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah of all bands you'd think would be shit live, AC really do deliver dont they? i dont really like strawberry jam but i caught them in portland for their strawberry jam tour and fuck me if it wasnt one of the best rock shows i think ive ever seen, seizure-inducing light show notwithstanding
