since everyone loved omar's screencapped images for the decade movie poll - i volunteered to make some for the top 10 (not screencaps obv), and musically obliged, so i won't be prognosticating anymore (although i can confirm that 3oh!3 did indeed make it in the top 5) - anyway i think they're pretty cool, altho i apologize from the jump for any that might be lol hueg -- also the first one is the most boring looking, i promise

Matt, I heard the Mastodon a few times and it was pretty good, if not quite there (a little bitty, perhaps? not quite righteous enough?); I'll give it another listen at some stage.

Sounds like you're looking for something along the lines of Astra or Dream Theater. That's not what Mastodon are going for. They're a metal band with some prog and classic rock influences.

Not exactly my cup o' tea either. I like some prog, but have doubts about the merits of seamless adventure.

By 'seamless adventure' I kinda mean 'the narrative works, and the creative elements combine into something exponential', rather than 'it stays in the same style throughout but goes on an odyssey of musicianship'; the latter can be kinda ew unless done by VdGG

i.e. the individual parts of the adventure, no matter how disparate, dissonant or jarring, are working for the adventure rather than for themselves - thus is the adventure a symbiotic system with no gratuitous extranarrative wank such as that purveyed by DT

Those three records above have grown on me, big time. The Lindstrom one is alright, not up to par with his best work, but I'm still enjoying it a lot. Would not have voted for Raekwon or the Lips in retrospect; both are good albums, but I've played them less over time than the others and sort of filed them into the back of my mind.
