Louis dude you would totally love the Fuck Buttons album, surprised you haven't heard it.

The Sprinkles album went #1 in Resident Advisor's list as well, it's not just a one-thread ILM hype record. I never really got into it, but then again I've come to the conclusion I just don't enjoy deep house that much.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

xpost lex, you seriously can't see why more people would be into the sprinkles album than the redshape? i mean i love redshape but i can't help but think the album is somehow a little grey and flat, maybe i just prefer listening to him in singles/mixes rather than albums. sprinkles' album really flows with a lot of shifting between ambient and more propulsive stuff, it is so lush and beautiful with gorgeous synth and vocal textures, perfect for home listening which really works for the album format.

xxp deep house w/ angry queer rants

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

the house-ness is more disputable than the deepness, angriness, or queerness

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

hm. alright, sounds like i'm overdo for a listen.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

Can't really see it being The XX.

May want to reconsider. I think it's a dark horse for the #1 spot...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

really don't see that happening

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

the redshape album really surprised me with how varied and constantly surprising and inventive it was (not b/c i didn't like redshape, more that i never assume any techno artist album will be that amazing) - sprinkles was sort of a really nice wash of sound but little really stood out on it.

i need 2 check out the fuck buttons -- didnt think it was my thing but off of the singles list i <3 surf solar

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

"Surf Solar" is great, but I think the album closes in even more spectacular fashion:

Gotta say that both the Fuck Buttons and the Sunn 0))) left me a bit cold. Think that Ben Frost was my top noisy choice for the year.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

Just put 'Surf Solar' on. I'll overlook the 'straight-up post-rock dynamics' criticisms I've been reading (actually, given how SS has started, I'd have probably done that anyway) and try to feel the love.

Someone else link some good DJ Sprinkles...

Need to hear that Ben Frost.

joagga lousome (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

fuck buttons probably not prog enough for you idk

Fever Ray isn't exactly prog and I love it!

This is pretty good stuff, may stick headphones on in a second, have a hunch it's better enjoyed that way

TY Rev! Consider it queued.

(full title: "House Music Is Controllable Desire You Can Own")

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

i'll probably see FB at Primavera where they will hopefully play loud and just after sunset

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

i actually really liked street horssing but couldn't really ever get into the new one. still think "sweet love for planet earth" is the best track they've done (louis, listen to that one).

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

i guess i should listen to dj sprinkles

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

Ilxor is totally OTM in saying that Flight Of The Feathered Serpent is the best thing on the Fuck Buttons album. It's the thumping Underworld type beat that underpins everything that makes it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

Was JUST ABOUT to write a post invoking Underworld

joagga lousome (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

The turn-off for me with the Fuck Buttons is that plodding way they build their tunes up. Like 'Olympians' feels just so ponderous - they're totally going for epic grandeur, but it's such a nothingy melody that goes nowhere really fucking slowly.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

I'm enjoying the full-length version of "Surf Solar". I'd only heard an edit before, which didn't quite have the same sweep to it.

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

yeah its a bit too built around just giant looping waves of sound and as usual i end up wanting a bit more on top xp

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

also listening to Surf Solar on good headphones right now btw :)

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

I'm listening on shitty earbuds :(

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

Verdict on Fuck Buttons: pretty good, nice sonics.....the musical narratives could stand to have a bit more space, a bit more rhythmic or melodic variation, but I understand that they're not really going for nuanced songwriting here. Trance away the heartache. Would like to hear a collaboration between these guys and Orbital.

NickB has a point, although I do stress I enjoyed the two tracks I've heard (if not quite enough to jump back in rightaway). You're wrong about Sunn O))), though, dude. Seriously, give 'Alice' another go if nothing else.

SteveM also on point perhaps; they could do with more variation, but headphones + Surf Solar especially are lovely.

yay!

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

^^^this guy is stealthily a VP for recommendations - if nothing else, 'Twinkle' by Badu gets a LOT of action round these parts, and Me'Shell Ndegeocello is PRETTY AWESOME TBH, also that psychedelic R&B thread is yet to be properly plundered

joagga lousome (acoleuthic), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

Wish I'd heard more of the Sprinkles but it's been really tricky trying to buy that thing.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

oh good, I cam add "Vice President of Music Reccomendations" to my resume

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

which I should probably spell in a more correct manner

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

Valuable Player, Rev!

"Sweet Love For Planet Earth" takes nearly 5 minutes to get going, but when it does...aw cmon give us ONE MORE melodic change. Just one. Please. C'mon. Explode with rhythm and melody as well as sonic layering. I know you can do this.

You're not going to, are you?

OK, until about six minutes in, this is mighty promising, even more so than Surf Solar. But at least that song was aware of FB's limitations. This one promised to go beyond and is now stuck in a rather embarrassing loop, unaware of what to do next. SS built and then faded with great precision, AND brought a sweet beat to the mix. So it's better. Much better. Argh! SLFPE is SUCH a letdown!

joagga lousome (acoleuthic), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:24 (sixteen years ago)

swift or electrik red next i reckon

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i can definitely see where this is coming from. the 'epic grandeur' is completely there for me and is the reason i like the record so much, but there's not really much else behind it so if that doesn't work for you i'd imagine the whole thing comes crashing down pretty quick.

i think post-rock stuff like Mogwai might be the most apt touchstone for it really.

another one that sounds about right to me -- lindstrom fanboysim would've been A BIT over the top if that had made top 10

hurrah electrik red in the top 10 :)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

lindstrom got in with av vote of 12 -- i think e-red's av vote is gonna be around 6 or 7 or so

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

this album is good but it is eclipsed by its awesome album art

make tha trap say hay (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

top 5 ppv so far

1. Fall Out Boy
2. Future of the Left
3. Nomo
4. DJ Sprinkles
5. Mastadon

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

that album's nice and all but nothing else i've heard from lindstrom even comes close to "where you go i go too"

ciderpress, Thursday, 25 February 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

musically said FOB were 2nd-highest and they had exactly 16 ppv, and I'm guessing ER is number one, so they should have an average place of above 5th
