i'm the opposite, the "cold"/"fistful of tears"/"help somebody"/"love you" stretch is my favourite on the album - the entire thing really grew on me so much over the last few months of the year, it's an album that you live with and only realise a bit later how much you love it. (xp to jordan)

it's def an album qua album but if i had to choose one cut it'd be "help somebody" - i love the details of the arrangement, the way it ebbs and flows, that moment halfway through when the beat drops out for a second <3

yeah help somebody is such a jam.

this record makes an incredible case for live-band rnb that is not some self-consciously retro dapkings shit

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:58 (fourteen years ago) link

it's really beautiful sounding as well, really immersive but every detail is so sharp. (xp otm)

it's an album that you live with and only realise a bit later how much you love it.

yeah i've realized this, just kinda need to spend more time on it cuz i have an inclination towards more modern sounding r&b (i think i've listened to the trey songz album as much as this one)

this record makes an incredible case for live-band rnb that is not some self-consciously retro dapkings shit

otm -- & more importantly imo is that it makes an incredible case that live band rnb can still work on a pop level where it feels refreshing because it works just as well on the radio as the-dream does, not just merely as a "breath of fresh air"

Where do people rank this with the rest of his albums? I think it's close between this and the debut.

I agree Help Somebody is one of the strongest tracks, along with Stop the World and Pretty Wings.

I'm not really a big fan of cold, I find myself cringing at the "Global warming ain't got nothing on you" line.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I think it's his second best album

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

talking of live band -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL4azQLfxoI

i love how pensive he looks throughout! think that fits w/the lyrical bent of the album - it's relatively undemonstrative, and this fits with the streak of uncertainty throughout, mulling over the ins and outs of various situations and cautiously coming to some sort of conclusion or resolution.

i think it's his best of what i've heard, which doesn't include the debut - embrya runs it real close though

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Two Suns has only two good songs on it.

Emily's Cheese, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago) link

they should've renamed it etc

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago) link

the maxwell singles still kind of lord over the album for me, but it's really nice to listen to

Yeah, same here. I did vote for it in my 11-20, but I prefer Embrya and Now.

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link

His debut is very much his worst btw, even if it does include a couple of k-classics.

mwah-ha-ha! absolutely fantastic. essentially a really heavy eyvind kang album, which suits me just fine.

that's two for me. no.2 on my ballot, if memory serves.

This album deserves a ton of lurve.

I don't think many of the posters here who haven't heard it will be checking the whole album out tbh.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Alice is nice.

i'm the opposite, the "cold"/"fistful of tears"/"help somebody"/"love you" stretch is my favourite on the album

Yeah, Love You was the track whose name I'd completely forgotten, the bridge in that song is just amazing.

I should probably go back to the Sunn 0))) album - the first time I heard it I kept stifling the urge to laugh so concluded it just wasn't for me.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link

funny how Sunn 0))) placing has stopped everyone chatting.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe you're all busy listening to it and I do everyone a disservice.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:24 (fourteen years ago) link

They are all busy having their minds and souls consumed whole by its awesome power, poise and indestructibility.

was my #3. Pretty sure my #1 is coming up yet, but no hope for #2 at this point.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Come now, there's hope for Brokencyde yet to place... thought I can't imagine what would take its rightful #1 spot on your ballot.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I had hoped Zombi and James Blackshaw might place but I've given up. No way will Converge place now unfortunately. Don't think anyone outside of the metal thread cares for them or Cobalt sadly.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha. No I've given up on Ben Frost placing.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link

starting to think that just maybe the nurse with wound albums i voted for aren't going to place

I couldn't track down the NWW albums of this year, so no votes for them from me, sorry.

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

it's possible I might have voted for paranoia in hi-fi...

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:36 (fourteen years ago) link

The Surveillance Lounge/The Memory Surface is wholly engaging and excellent. Should've thrown it a vote!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Emil.y, I've got a spare Paranoia In Hi-Fi if you need it, but Resident still had copies the last time I looked...

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

O man, I just remembered that actually the reason why I didn't vote for NWW was in fact down to a long and convoluted system of confusion rather than lack of awareness... Completely forgot about that brainwrong.

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:55 (fourteen years ago) link

what is NWW?

metal tho? shit sounds like In a Silent Way or something like that

xp: yay! my #8

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link

xp good call on the miles/fusion ref. its influence is all over this. the first track is called 'aghartha', but isn't jazzy. 'alice' (named after alice coltrane) is the least obviously metal of the four tracks and features julian priester.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

If my list had been ranked, The Juan Maclean may have gotten another #1 vote, in retrospect. It's been in my always-fluctuating top five or so for the entirety of last year... awesome, awesome album.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

The Juan Maclean also put on the straight-up best live show of 2009.

that album is just really, really solid tho -- i think if they had never released "happy house" and i just heard it on the album then the album woudl've been my #1, but oh well

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

is my #1 and 'happy house' is by no means my favourite thing on it

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:34 (fourteen years ago) link

there were a few trax i had to program out from the future will come (title track, "a new bot", "human disaster") and "happy house" did feel somewhat separate from it, but otherwise one of the most purely pleasurable albums of the year. didn't vote for it but it came close.
