given how the bat for lashes/florence and the machine/la roux/little boots audiences overlap so much elsewhere (despite their being pretty distinct artists), it's curious that ilx has embraced one but definitely not the others

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

xp I can understand that, but this is by some way their best work since the soft bulletin.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

to many people, that's not saying much

ILM be full of goths.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

I like Florence a little bit too, but La Roux (and Little Boots to a lesser degree) can go rot the fuck in hell.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

Shame on Phil Oakey for wasting his time with Little Boots.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

the advantage BFL album has over, um, the other aforementioned UK wimmins, is the general dream pop/ethereal production ethos really (tho it doesn't mine that enough imo). that's what i like best about it at least. don't rate it much more than the little boots lp tho.

i love that Bat For Lashes album and made my Top 10, surprised (like others have said) that it didn't make ILM's Top 10.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

nice! i think maxwell is the only thing i heard too late that would've cracked my top 20

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

The Maxwell album really grew on me through out the year. It might actually be my favorite album of his.

I voted for the Flaming Lips. I really wasn't excited about a new album by them but it's easily their best since the Soft Bulletin.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

Gave Maxwell a try a couple of months ago. Found it pretty bland, tbh.

untrue pitch, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

the maxwell singles still kind of lord over the album for me, but it's really nice to listen to

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

Maxwell not making p4k's list was criminal. Glad to see it so high up. The Bat for Lashes should be well higher. That one's only gotten better with time.

Indexed, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think the Maxwell album is pretty great throughout, really glad to see it here.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

i'm the opposite, the "cold"/"fistful of tears"/"help somebody"/"love you" stretch is my favourite on the album - the entire thing really grew on me so much over the last few months of the year, it's an album that you live with and only realise a bit later how much you love it. (xp to jordan)

it's def an album qua album but if i had to choose one cut it'd be "help somebody" - i love the details of the arrangement, the way it ebbs and flows, that moment halfway through when the beat drops out for a second <3

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah help somebody is such a jam.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

this record makes an incredible case for live-band rnb that is not some self-consciously retro dapkings shit

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

it's really beautiful sounding as well, really immersive but every detail is so sharp. (xp otm)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

it's an album that you live with and only realise a bit later how much you love it.

yeah i've realized this, just kinda need to spend more time on it cuz i have an inclination towards more modern sounding r&b (i think i've listened to the trey songz album as much as this one)

this record makes an incredible case for live-band rnb that is not some self-consciously retro dapkings shit

otm -- & more importantly imo is that it makes an incredible case that live band rnb can still work on a pop level where it feels refreshing because it works just as well on the radio as the-dream does, not just merely as a "breath of fresh air"

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

Where do people rank this with the rest of his albums? I think it's close between this and the debut.

I agree Help Somebody is one of the strongest tracks, along with Stop the World and Pretty Wings.

I'm not really a big fan of cold, I find myself cringing at the "Global warming ain't got nothing on you" line.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's his second best album

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

talking of live band -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL4azQLfxoI

i love how pensive he looks throughout! think that fits w/the lyrical bent of the album - it's relatively undemonstrative, and this fits with the streak of uncertainty throughout, mulling over the ins and outs of various situations and cautiously coming to some sort of conclusion or resolution.

i think it's his best of what i've heard, which doesn't include the debut - embrya runs it real close though

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

Two Suns has only two good songs on it.

Emily's Cheese, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

they should've renamed it etc

suge knight btw (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, same here. I did vote for it in my 11-20, but I prefer Embrya and Now.

im barry white btw (The Reverend), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

His debut is very much his worst btw, even if it does include a couple of k-classics.

mwah-ha-ha! absolutely fantastic. essentially a really heavy eyvind kang album, which suits me just fine.

that's two for me. no.2 on my ballot, if memory serves.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

TOP 15!!!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

This album deserves a ton of lurve.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think many of the posters here who haven't heard it will be checking the whole album out tbh.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

Alice is nice.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

i'm the opposite, the "cold"/"fistful of tears"/"help somebody"/"love you" stretch is my favourite on the album

Yeah, Love You was the track whose name I'd completely forgotten, the bridge in that song is just amazing.

I should probably go back to the Sunn 0))) album - the first time I heard it I kept stifling the urge to laugh so concluded it just wasn't for me.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

funny how Sunn 0))) placing has stopped everyone chatting.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe you're all busy listening to it and I do everyone a disservice.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

They are all busy having their minds and souls consumed whole by its awesome power, poise and indestructibility.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

was my #3. Pretty sure my #1 is coming up yet, but no hope for #2 at this point.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

Come now, there's hope for Brokencyde yet to place... thought I can't imagine what would take its rightful #1 spot on your ballot.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

I had hoped Zombi and James Blackshaw might place but I've given up. No way will Converge place now unfortunately. Don't think anyone outside of the metal thread cares for them or Cobalt sadly.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

Ha. No I've given up on Ben Frost placing.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

starting to think that just maybe the nurse with wound albums i voted for aren't going to place

THEY HAVE CREATED ANOTHER (jjjusten), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

kong are going to be top 5, I reckon.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

that sunn o))) cover might be my favorite of 2009

!aNiMeGaLaXy (Future_Perfect), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

I couldn't track down the NWW albums of this year, so no votes for them from me, sorry.

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

it's possible I might have voted for paranoia in hi-fi...

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

The Surveillance Lounge/The Memory Surface is wholly engaging and excellent. Should've thrown it a vote!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Emil.y, I've got a spare Paranoia In Hi-Fi if you need it, but Resident still had copies the last time I looked...
