hey musically, you are awes.

mastodon album is decent but that's a wacky high placement for it.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

Metal voting bloc.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

make tha trap say hay (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 04:54 (sixteen years ago)

Lol @ coming straight back in with Mastodon. Excellent force of impact there.

I think the Mastodon album had a lot of crossover appeal and people would have voted for it who wouldn't have bothered with the metal poll at all. I know I did.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 09:42 (sixteen years ago)

I think you're right.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

mastodon do elaborate brutality with considerable panache, but I really didn't like crack the skye. load of ponderous filigree guff.

for me, they peaked with remission and have become a little more dull with each album since. haven't given up on them though... I'm still hoping the next album will bring the crushingness.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

Remission is by far my fave too but I have loved all the others. They wont go back to that style though, which is a pity as I loved the sludgy parts they sometimes employed back then.

I think the Mastodon album had a lot of crossover appeal and people would have voted for it who wouldn't have bothered with the metal poll at all. I know I did.

― Matt DC,

Did you like previous stuff? Was it the clean vocals this time that did the trick?

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

A 20-somethin' girl at work who likes 'lectronica and Joanna Newsom decided to try to get into metal since some of her friends are into it. She lurves the new Mastodon. Rightly so.

M the G, aren't there like several thousand metal bands out there who try to outdo the "crushingness" of their previous album, only to sound more and more dull? Thank god for Mastodon, who manage to get MORE interesting with each release without sounding too ponderous.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

don't get me wrong, I'm not single-minded in pursuit of crushingness, and I'm all for upping the intricacy - I'm just not feeling the direction mastodon have gone in. I don't think it plays to their strengths. they're exceptional as a brutal metal band, mediocre as a noodly prog outfit.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

should vote for better albums

That's as maybe (haven't heard the Mastodon tbh) but it kind of works on the assumption that people vote for albums having heard a sizeable amount of their 'competition', which is by no means always the case. I don't think most people aim for some sort of perfect equilibrium in their listening habits, they just sort of stumble through falling on things that seem interesting. Don't they?

Originoo Golf Clappaz (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

I'd be surprised if Sunn 0))) didn't make it. It was the only thing close to metal on my ballot, for instance (well, aside from Zombi getting in the metal chart for some inexplicable reason).

emil.y, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

xp well my comment (tossed of as it was) was in reference to the concept of a "metal voting bloc" getting the mastodon record a high placement, and i was saying that if that were the case they should be voting for better metal records. what i'd say about crack the skye is that it's a hell of a lot better than blood mountain (by which i mean it's halfway listenable) and fans of their old stuff should find some things to like about it, but it's still pretty damn mor at the end of the day.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

lol I loved Blood Mountain. I really can't explain why I've not even made an effort to hear CTS, other than having a constant stream of stuff someone wants me to listen to

I miss Edith Bowman's great music taste she played rock and indie (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

xp it's not like there was a concerted campaign by the metalheads to smuggle mastodon in the list though. it's just that lots of folks liked it.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

right--i realize that--again, my og comment was a tossed off continuation of johnny fever's own tossed-off comment about a metal voting bloc

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

if anything there was people actively begging people not to vote Mastodon.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

You guys are just like the rnb dudes berating everyone for voting for Crazy In Love.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

You wait until the noise dudes get on your case for voting for Fuck Buttons.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

crazy in love >>>>>> crack the skye

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

hey I voted Mastodon.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

There's an awful lot of tossing off going on, on this thread.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

I'd be surprised if Sunn 0))) didn't make it. It was the only thing close to metal on my ballot, for instance (well, aside from Zombi getting in the metal chart for some inexplicable reason).

― emil.y,

But Zombi are on a metal label and most of their fans are metalheads!

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

if anything there was people actively begging people not to vote Mastodon.

― Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname)

Feel free and call me out - I campaigned against all the metal that will make this poll - Mastodon, Baroness and Sunn O))). It's all crap.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

Too low!

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

Good album - though I didn't hear it until after I submitted my ballot.

o. nate, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe? Can't make that call until I see the top 17.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

Yep, this is top ten material for me. Really kept sneaking up on me throughout the year, but I played it as much as anything else in the end.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

I am really enjoying the Death album upthread.

dog latin, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

BFL was my #4, but I might be comfortable with it coming at #18. Like I said, there are still 17 more to go before I get butthurt.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

Had I voted, I would have ranked that album very high; my only real "problem" with it is that I got both B4L albums at the same time and I like Fur and Gold more.

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

I'm trying to think of 17 albums from 2009 better than Two Suns... can't do it.

DavidM, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

My #1 already came in at #26 here, but #2 and #3 are still waiting to place (one of which I'm sure will, but the other I'm not sure at all).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

I wish I could see my ballot. But I don't want to email Musically again if she's really busy, hopefully she can reply at some point.
