Kind of glad this is dragging out, because I was out of town for two weeks and I still have 40% of the poll left to view as it happens (if/when it happens)!

Also, I LOVE these results btw.

is there a revised schedule yet?

musically has fallen into the black hole swirling inside her office somewhere. Either she's posting the results of the poll from the year 1932, when ILX didn't exist, or from 2358 when all of us are long gone.

Ok, which one are you: Damon Lindelof or Carlton Cuse?

hrm, i realize people have better things to do with their lives but it would be cool if--seeing as we've already gotten to the top 20 and finished the album poll with relative speed--this didn't take months. i'm having a harder time caring with every passing day.

MASTODON!!!

I am borderline shocked this made it to the top 20. Awesome album, I've come around full circle.

Lol @ coming straight back in with Mastodon. Excellent force of impact there.

I think the Mastodon album had a lot of crossover appeal and people would have voted for it who wouldn't have bothered with the metal poll at all. I know I did.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 09:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I think you're right.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:14 (fourteen years ago) link

mastodon do elaborate brutality with considerable panache, but I really didn't like crack the skye. load of ponderous filigree guff.

for me, they peaked with remission and have become a little more dull with each album since. haven't given up on them though... I'm still hoping the next album will bring the crushingness.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Remission is by far my fave too but I have loved all the others. They wont go back to that style though, which is a pity as I loved the sludgy parts they sometimes employed back then.

― Matt DC,

Did you like previous stuff? Was it the clean vocals this time that did the trick?

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:32 (fourteen years ago) link

A 20-somethin' girl at work who likes 'lectronica and Joanna Newsom decided to try to get into metal since some of her friends are into it. She lurves the new Mastodon. Rightly so.

M the G, aren't there like several thousand metal bands out there who try to outdo the "crushingness" of their previous album, only to sound more and more dull? Thank god for Mastodon, who manage to get MORE interesting with each release without sounding too ponderous.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:35 (fourteen years ago) link

don't get me wrong, I'm not single-minded in pursuit of crushingness, and I'm all for upping the intricacy - I'm just not feeling the direction mastodon have gone in. I don't think it plays to their strengths. they're exceptional as a brutal metal band, mediocre as a noodly prog outfit.

m the g, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

should vote for better albums

That's as maybe (haven't heard the Mastodon tbh) but it kind of works on the assumption that people vote for albums having heard a sizeable amount of their 'competition', which is by no means always the case. I don't think most people aim for some sort of perfect equilibrium in their listening habits, they just sort of stumble through falling on things that seem interesting. Don't they?

Originoo Golf Clappaz (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd be surprised if Sunn 0))) didn't make it. It was the only thing close to metal on my ballot, for instance (well, aside from Zombi getting in the metal chart for some inexplicable reason).
