Rebirth definitely sounds very influenced by Rage Dump Against The Machine

the lady of rage dump

nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 05:30 (fourteen years ago) link

currently have Devo's "Space Junk" stuck in my head w/ "rage dump" in place of the title

the cold bieber open (some dude), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 05:44 (fourteen years ago) link

y'all are definitely forgetting tonetta

autotuna fish (Tape Store), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 05:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't think that Flaming Lips album is a lock, especially over Mastodon.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 08:06 (fourteen years ago) link

am wondering whether the hyperdub comp might be a wild card

i fully expect 8 of my votes to show in the top 20 so i'm pretty happy...think i can give up on courtney love and demi lovato now though.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 08:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I've scored 1/30 so far, definitely another 3 to come, but wow, I really suck at this game.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 09:18 (fourteen years ago) link

nothing yet... reckon I might get two in the remaining 20.

m the g, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 09:59 (fourteen years ago) link

DJ Sprinkles does seem likely, now that I think about it.

You sure Maxwell is a sure thing, J0rdan?

Also, I can't see Washed Out or Neon Indian making the list. The Neon Indian threads, for one, were painfully short and there wasn't much talk/love around the album.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 14:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Mastodon I can see maybe making it.

xpost: b/c of the absence of "Deadbeat Summer" from the songs poll, I would be very surprised if NI make the top 20.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 14:49 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think washed out will -- i think neon indian and/or memory tapes are more likely

iirc neon indian album wasnt even nominated

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 14:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm kind of pessimistic about these, but what about Martyn, Redshape, Shackleton or the Moritz von Oswald Trio?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Also Micachu even?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i would've expected to see some of those earlier on the list, but now i'm not so sure. dj sprinkles otoh is a lock.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:11 (fourteen years ago) link

would sooo rather see redshape than sprinkles but that's not gonna happen - somewhat perplexed at how sprinkles got so many on board when the ones nick b listed didn't, but oh well

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:31 (fourteen years ago) link

None of those dance releases are likely to make it. Micachu might, I suppose, but other than the Flaming Lips I can't see who on Jordan's list might be dropped to make way for them.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link

as i've said elsewhere what's most interesting this year is actually the order. fever ray are my tip for no 1 but hardly a shoe-in; electrik red, who i'm most interested in, could be anywhere between say 3 and 15 and i wouldn't be shocked.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno why you guys think the Lips won't make it. I'd expect them not as high as Pfork's #4 ranking, but likely somewhere in the 11-15 range here on ILM.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Electrik Red will be in the 11-20 range. Would be realllllyyyy surprised if it breaks top ten, even with all the love -- sort of like The-Dream's "Fancy" in the tracks poll, say. I don't think it'll beat out the more widely heard records that will go top ten.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

e red will be highest averate score maybe, #1 in our hearts etc

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

electrik red will get the highest no of no 1s

Mmm... Liking that Matayo Aguayo (sp?) album - remidns me of El Guincho from a couple of years ago, and also Panda Bear. Where else can I hear this sort of "raggedy latin lo-fi house" thing?

dog latin, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i picked that record up yesterday because of this thread--it is good! those are fair comps but matias is much funkier.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i'd love to do a mix in that kind of style - maybe throw a few curveballs like Ruby Suns and some traditional south american tunes too. not really what people call "latino house" though is it? is it even a genre?

dog latin, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 16:10 (fourteen years ago) link

never would've thought to compare matias aguayo to those guys, aguayo actually knows how to produce dance music. not really meant as a diss to those guys, btw.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:19 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^exactly. didn't really love ay ay ay (though aguayo's done great stuff in the past) but it wasn't fucking "lo-fi"!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean without actually knowing how he made it i could see why you could ascribe "lo-fi" to it. he sort of works with a very flat sound palette which is one of the cool things about the record.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, it is definitely not a typical sounding dance record

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Ay Ay Ay was one of my favorites from last year, and I voted for it. The more I listen to it the more I think that every single sound on the album, incl bass and percussion, was made from voice samples. Does anyone know if this is true?

feels like about 90& voice to me; most obvious exception is accordion on last track.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, forgot about that. on the whole the effect is heavily acoustic-sounding, very different from most dance music

This Dave Aju album from last year did the all-voice thing very well, I thought.

am i the only one who's prejudiced against the all-voice gimmick?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 16 February 2010 18:52 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno, if it works, it works.

Don't forget Todd Rundgren's A Capella. Or do, maybe, but it had its highlights -- "Pretending to Care" is the track I still come back to.

Pretty certain it isn't, just checked the press release and it mentions other instruments (and, sort of weirdly, makes v little play of the voice manipulation thing at all)

Originoo Golf Clappaz (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

There are definitely other sounds on it - not sure any of them are electronic though.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link

is this happening this month or what?

nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 20:14 (fourteen years ago) link

i hope it comes back tomorrow!

also- that dave aju album is pretty great. caught my attention way more than the matias aguayo did, but it's not like i've spent much time with either.

psychgawsple, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 03:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Considering how well Mariah and Rihanna performed, I think ER will be top 10. R&B voters be out in force.

schedule: 20-11 on Friday and top 10 on Monday

i would complain about my job/life but i'm sure there's another more appropriate thread for that

Mungolian Jet Set was my washing-up listening last night. Really rather liked it although I only got a few tracks in.

I didn't vote/haven't heard of hardly anything on the list so far, but it's the same every year. I must just skip all the new music threads.
