I expect probably 14 more and maybe an encore for Gucci Mane

The Reverend, Saturday, 13 February 2010 10:45 (fourteen years ago) link

really? i can't see any other Gucci releases placing this high.

the cold bieber open (some dude), Saturday, 13 February 2010 13:22 (fourteen years ago) link

not sure if the album will get more votes from peeps who don't really do mixtapes, but there's a reason that one was a "maybe"

The Reverend, Saturday, 13 February 2010 13:36 (fourteen years ago) link

fair enough.

one thing i love about ILX: our polls don't look like anyone else's polls

― Mordy, Friday, 12 February 2010

also it's pretty good seeing all the "dnp in p4k"s - in yr FACE, useless website.

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend),

heh, only problem is that these results so far are as bad and boring.
I don't see the point in celebrating a poll just because it has different results from other polls when the results actually aren't any better, plus a lot of these albums are as predictable to ILM as those other albums are to pitchfork but different strokes etc.
Glad to see some people are enjoying the results though just like I did last year.
Hopefully there's loads of surprise high entries for lesser known music to come so we can all discover something great that we may have missed. Last year was great for that.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 13:59 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't think there will be anything like that though this year now. ILM seems to be heading towards to the mainstream this year more than previous years.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 14:03 (fourteen years ago) link

lol u really haven't found anything worth investigating in the results so far?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 February 2010 14:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm pretty sure that when this list is done and we can compare it to previous ILM album polls "more mainstream" will not be the phrase that comes to anyone's mind.

the cold bieber open (some dude), Saturday, 13 February 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Anything i like or vaguely like I had already heard I'm afraid.
xp

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 14:41 (fourteen years ago) link

how sad for u

I haven't found it predictable but then I've realised recently (thanks in part to the '70s/'80s polls) that I don't really have a handle on what consensus ILM taste might even be - I guess that might not be the case for the more regular posters.

Things I voted for so far: Baroness, Mountain Goats, Omar-S, Rihanna (maybe Mariah too, that was on the edge of my Top 20 and I can't find the scrap of paper I wrote my ballot down on...)
Things I plan on investigating: Gucci Mane, UGK, Meanderthals, Dam-Funk, Death

fsotl "arming eritrea" is so good; will def check out the album at some stage, maybe even just buy it unheard if they are some broke motherfuckers

zvookster, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Btw, I recommend "Throwing Bricks at Trains" off the FotL album for anyone who hasn't heard it.

Mordy, Saturday, 13 February 2010 16:26 (fourteen years ago) link

dunno how i completely forgot abt the st vincent album; wouldve been somewhere btwn ~8-12 for me

Anything i like or vaguely like I had already heard I'm afraid.

"I know I won't like it, therefore I won't listen to it" seems like a funny position to take after slamming the results.

Parenthetical Grillz, Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Except I didn't say "I know I won't like it, therefore I won't listen to it". So saying that I did seems like a stupid thing to say.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link

So you've heard just enough of each record to know it's not your bag?

the cold bieber open (some dude), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I've heard plenty of the albums, and in the case of mariah, rihanna, girls ive heard the singles or seen several youtubes posted on them , so in their case, yes I've heard just enough of those acts to know I wont like the albums, if that is what you meant.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

herman do you like any pop, rap, or r&b? maybe ilm polls arent for you

fwiw i'm as befuddled by these results as the next guy

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

kev you say that as if the top 20 is going to have more than a handful of rap/R&B records.

the cold bieber open (some dude), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

xp or maybe you could start your own poll in a genre you like so you could have enjoyable results to look forward to every year and....oh wait....

call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

oh i forgot that I only listen to one genre of music. Nice of you to follow me around on ilx to keep me right, how would I manage without you.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

ok let me level with you: complaining about poll results is just not really a mindset i understand or can really get behind.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:00 (fourteen years ago) link

wish a few of these were available on spotify.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:01 (fourteen years ago) link

well every year, every poll, there's people who don't like results of polls, last years I did like a lot in it, this year I don't. Other people have said they dislike the results so far.
Plenty of people who didn't like last years probably like this years, I'm not the only one who doesn't like the results so far. No doubt if pitchfork bands dominate the top 20 others will dislike that too. That's the internet for you. Would be very very boring if everyone agreed with one another.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Spotify doesn't have many of these albums?

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't even access Spotify in the U.S. I guess there is a way to do using a proxy, but I'm not up on the specifics of it. I have been able to find a fair amount of the albums on Lala or Grooveshark though.

quite a few of them are on Spotify, but the ones I've not heard aren't. Specifically I'd like to hear Death.

Most of Death's ...For the Whole World to See is on Grooveshark (one track, "Where Do We Go from Here" seems to be missing): http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/artist/Death/1098142.

the death album is quite good iirc but not such a curate's egg as sometimes claimed (omg do we have to rewrite all our holy rockrit metanarratives?)

nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago) link

thx cad

Jmo, but to the extent that they were largely written out of rock history up until last year, I think that it is an important resurrection. I grew up in the seventies, listened to a lot of punk and proto-punk and had never heard of them before.

Sometimes a pie is just a pie (KMS), Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:09 (fourteen years ago) link

'for the whole world to see' was never previously released afaik so it never had the chance to be written, but yes an omission now thankfully filled

nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:32 (fourteen years ago) link

curate's egg is something that's good in parts, as in the superpolite curate who gets a bad egg but disputes the fact: "Oh no, it is quite good in parts" Think you mean something else.

freebird manjunya (zvookster), Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

suggest "missing link"

freebird manjunya (zvookster), Saturday, 13 February 2010 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link

there also seemed to be a reactionary sentiment, if they weren't trying to rewrite history in its favour people reached either for inessential oddity or overhyped juvenilia, none of this seemed right and i don't think it diminishes death to say it's a good album with an unusual history that sort of threw critics

nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 20:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Screw the history books, it's just a really good rock & roll record that no one had heard before.

The Reverend, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link

yes!

nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

As of right now...

Albums I voted for:

UGK; Death

Albums I liked a lot but didn't vote for:

Matias Aguayo; Meanderthals; JJ; Mariah Carey; Junior Boys; Royksopp; Omar-S; Mungolian Jet Set; Dam-Funk; Rihanna

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 14 February 2010 00:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm guessing from his album title that Dâm-Funk is an alias of Musiq Soulchild?

the cold bieber open (some dude), Sunday, 14 February 2010 00:49 (fourteen years ago) link

none of my votes are here

I have heard seven of these and liked Royskopp, FotL and Death. Neko and MG aren't really my thing but obv both good. don't get Grizzly Bear but I do get Lada Gaga, my friends' kids are all into her. there's probably 8 or 10 more that I plan on checking out when I spin radio rotation. I see a lot of this stuff in the stacks and pass it up but tbh an ILM recommendation does help.
