on the upside, the promo has FANTASTIC sound (maybe that's a downside in terms of promptin folks to buy the cd) for some reason. noticed its encoded with LAME - i have no idea if that is why.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Well on first listen this techno pop pomp is teh meh. Bpitch should be renamed to Harthouse !

(I'm not going to review it here or anywhere else : the nine to fivers can have that easy check and I won't look like the obligatory sourpuss. Note to self : keep smiling in that upwardly mobile manner)

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

xpost to myself: (its also a realy huge file.)

just meh??

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll listen to it again..

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:20 (twenty years ago)

there you go

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

i cant stand indietronica, especially with synth strings, so i better refrain from commenting

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Bpitch should be renamed to Harthouse

I said it was trancey!

blunt, yawn - be men. If you got something to say just spill it! The thread's gone a while without negative comments anyway, balance, discussion is good :)

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

italic run on test...

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 12:04 (twenty years ago)

carry on

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

I feel like I just got caught peeking at my Christmas presents in November. :\

jeffery (jeffery), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

How many reviews have (in)directly referenced ILM by now, anyway? I've seen a lot of pseudo-consensus reviews that paraphrase discussion.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I already got it! P2P download. hehehe

tintin, Saturday, 18 February 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

oh what a clever boy you are

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Saturday, 18 February 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

is it ok to post on this yet though? (meanwhile i'm really enjoying Jet and Bubbles (the U2 song))

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 18 February 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Bubbles (the U2 song)

*eyebrow leaves planet earth*

must listen again....

worst iPod case scenario (fandango), Saturday, 18 February 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

i'm not being really serious about that/as if they were going for that, its just certain obvious to the listener (or me atleast) edge sounding and bono tune writing elements that make one go hmmmm or chuckle atleast. i can't believe i wrote chuckle, i'm turing into a man.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 19 February 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

also, should we bury this thread for awhile? someone tell me, b/c i have no clue obviously.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 19 February 2006 10:34 (twenty years ago)

I have felt less like wanting to comment since hearing about them both finding the leaks so disheartening :/

I feel regretful about mentioning it at the top of the thread now, but then I was expecting it to leak a few weeks before the release, like "Thrills" (and every other record out there) I guess I'd be buying it anyway so my conscience is clear(ish) but it now feels a little selfish in retrospect to be drawing attention to it... althought I hadn't quite anticipated how often (a lot more) compared to last year, direct http download links end up posted in the thread at some point nowadays. No p2p involved. It's just too easy.

worst iPod case scenario (fandango), Sunday, 19 February 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

i can comment without a guilty conscience as my copy is a legit promo and i did no leaking hurrah (though i am shocked at how quickly it got out - it leaked two days before my copy even arrived! are there people whose instant reaction to receiving promos is to rip them? madness).

every time i listen to it it sounds different; the only one i'm not sure about is 'leave me alone', does anyone know who's singing on it?

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

To calm things down a bit: it was just my record dealer telling me that Ellen Allien doesn't want to put the record out anymore. She was pissed and angry, alright. But she knows how to do business. Maybe she'll think about it. I mean - I don't see a record like this THAT MUCH affected because of early leakage. But that's just me.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was very surprised to see this album being leaked so early. It would be such a shame for it not to be released :(

I'll definitely pick up a copy.

Michael Dieter (Mika), Sunday, 19 February 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Obviously, late to the thread party.

I got the promo around late Jan. Since then its been playing on our electronic channel "A Chance to Cure", and also on the main channel, in the battle for haters' hearts and minds. I haven't heard from Berlin that the release date is any later than the original April date.

The design has flaws, yes, but them's the beta breaks.

two weeks pass...
http://www.orchestra-of-bubbles.com/ :)

p.s. (Lex) yes, the vocals are by Apparat on that song. There's an interview with them both in the new Slices DVD.

file under cozy techno (fandango), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 08:36 (twenty years ago)

went through a period of disinterest and am liking this MUCH more but there's a limit. and the songs here seem so personal for a collaboration -as if EA and A are REALLY good friends. whether ture, i like the idea. and am i a cheeseball for liking "Way Out" so much?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 05:02 (twenty years ago)

They were dating for a while, so good friends at least.

I don't mind "Way Out" (I still think the vocals are a little awkward & hate to say it) but I'm glad there's some counterpoint too.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 April 2006 07:42 (twenty years ago)

'way out' is my favourite! i wish i could hear what ellen is singing on it, the only word i can make out is "trance" which is kind of apposite anyway.

they dated circa berlinette but i was told very emphatically that they are Not Dating Any More and the fact that they ever did has Nothing Whatsoever To Do With This They Respect Each Other For Their MUSIC!!!!

but it does sound very intimate, susan, you're right.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 April 2006 07:53 (twenty years ago)

lyrics --> http://www.orchestra-of-bubbles.com/

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 April 2006 08:01 (twenty years ago)

haha it's not even "trance" anyway"! cheers fandango.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 April 2006 08:15 (twenty years ago)

xpost! (ok i'm BRAVELY posting this BEFORE i read the lyrics b/c i imagine it'll be funny)

Weird that they dated! intimacy and trust here. i'm trying at this very moment to figure out what she's saying.

sure is so wrong:
sporting traits (possible worst/best line ever)
blah blah
tricky word (world?)
dry legs
still exploring
time/dry
way out
inside

ok that is pretty on nonetheless.
fandango i almost have trouble with the singing-how awkward/craning/amateur it sounds. its like situation w/ Mark Koz. whose singing is also not the perfect execution the rest of his musicmaking is - but i like hearing that 'i'm doing my own songs' thing.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

its confirmed, i'm challenged.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 08:51 (twenty years ago)

i could never get the word you think is 'sporting' - i always thought it was 'spouting' or 'scouting', then 'trance'. we were both v wrong!

i can't see how ellen's vocals on 'way out' are awkward at all - i think it's my favourite of all her vocal tracks, she sounds liberated and light-headed and full-blooded on it.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 April 2006 08:52 (twenty years ago)

i agree with your words, but i think she can sound liberated and awkward at the same time. right? i mean particularly her. but again, i like it anyway.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I don't mind the vocals so much. I almost wish I hadn't mentioned it now. It does give it a nice personal feel... and it's really only this song, not the others here.

It's odd though that I feel like I can get closer to the music somehow when they aren't so exposed? But yeah, she does sound very free on it.

I think I thought it was "sporting dreads" at first! which really would have been complete happy-hippy-trance :D

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:02 (twenty years ago)

sporting dreads, shrinking world... dry legs??

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:04 (twenty years ago)

(ack! I didn't even scan back over yr post susan)

anyway, still looking forward the the CD. I feel like this has reached fanclub levels of nitpicking here & I'm probably to blame.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

i agree with your words, but i think she can sound liberated and awkward at the same time. right? i mean particularly her. but again, i like it anyway.

maybe awkward because it's so far away from how ellen normally sings? i really feel it's her big pop moment, really brazenly, shamelessly anthemic. whenever i've played it out it's gone down v well, and it's going to be a single just in time for the summer raves...

I feel like this has reached fanclub levels of nitpicking here & I'm probably to blame.

i think this album more than deserves it! i was co-djing with my friend anna-marie on monday, and she played 'turbo dreams', and we were just looking at each other and saying - this music is so unutterably gorgeous! how is it possible for music to be this good!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

i was hoping there was someone to blame for my staying up till 3am over this. shit.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

i just think there's a clearness flatness to her voice that could be seen as at odds with that the pop lush thing. i mean she sounds way thicker and airier than she normally does/she definitely sounds different, but i can still hear that in this song. i'm not sure if that's what fandango's issue is.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:28 (twenty years ago)

She does sound different.. I think it's just the extended vibrato-y bit after "Way Out is Haaard" that's a bit unsuccessful to my ear.

Hey 99% of the rest of the time I love her vocals/vocal treatments... I mean it's not like she's Billy Corgan or something!! I don't want to get a little niggle out of proportion here, I'll end up sounding ungrateful when I'm very much not.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:41 (twenty years ago)

fandango which are your favorite songs? i'm too lazy to scroll up. you can email me if this is excessively selfish posting.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Well, off the top of my head.

Jet
Retina
Do Not Break
Floating Points
Metric
Bubbles
Turbodreams
Edison
Way Out
(+ the bonus tracks?)

there's not really that much between any of them!

Oh, while I'm here I haven't posted this yet have I?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmPCYQn5wVU&search=ellen%20allien

fandango, do you do the thinktoy mixes?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 9 April 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

ooh yeah, meant to post that too.

I don't do the thinktoy mixes no, just stumbled across it recently. I don't like that mix hugely to be honest, although I like every track on it individually. It's a shame as I wouldn't have minded using it to recommend her to people. It's very hard to hear it with fresh ears after all this time though so I might be being too negative.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 9 April 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

ok phew!! hahaha. sorry. but yeah. i actually burned that as an introduction for a few folks anyway. and it's somewhat nice/interesting to hear her music presented like that. all u can eat style. actually like parts of it and the other mixes.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

it's somewhat nice/interesting to hear her music presented like that. all u can eat style.

It is yes! I'm also glad someone else made the effort to do it ;) I lack the technical ability (ok, haven't bothered to learn) but it's something I'd thought about doing before.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

i admit that i love it right now.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:32 (twenty years ago)

The dubbed voices in English on that interview on youtube that Susan linked are killing me. How come it's always the most generic and enthusiastic voices that sound nothing like the speakers? Good interview, but so laughable.
