Brainiac!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

there's that evergreen record from 1996 that jmurphs produced (post-slint band with drummer britt walford) -- i am doubtful about the brainiac stuff, eli janney/steve albini had it on lockdown, save i think the one ep they did with kim deal. honestly, my head would explode if james murphy had anything to do with brainiac, that would be too much for me.

Nick Sylvester, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't consider James Murphy's production work in the 1990s to be DFA, really.

hstencil, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have yet to hear a DFA record that DOESN'T remind me of Primal Scream. Or at least Death In Vegas. Yeah = laboured 90s indie dance par extraordinare.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt you are a mentalist!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an interview with the DFA folks in the newest Tape Op magazine that covers some of their history.

NA (Nick A.), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Spot of trivia: James Murphy and DFA studios are mentioned on the closing credits of Requiem For A Dream - seems he (they?) did some production work on some of the score. That must be, what, 2000?

Jason J, Monday, 5 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, James Murphy and Clint fucking Boon. This man's resume' just gets dirtier the more you dig...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 January 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone else remember the okay indie-rock band james was in back in the early to mid '90s, PONY?

they were pretty good live, not so great on record -- they played a lot with friends' bands like sleepyhead, dungbeetle, 6fs (john / juan mclean) so i saw them maybe ten times...

just curious.

yetimike (McGonigal), Monday, 5 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Pony too, god they were horrible.

hstencil, Monday, 5 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dfa's first work was with brainiac, if i'm not mistaken. next was the turing machine record. correct me if i'm wrong, lauren.

i think the turing machine record is the first dfa production. i'm completely unaware of any work with brainiac... interesting, though.

(hi, jg. you following all of this?)

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

early ilm ref. to dfa/turing machine over on this thread

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 5 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

even though the new turing machine material has kinda blown live, i can't wait to hear their new record. justin was sposed to gimme some of the recordings/demos, but i haven't seen him in ages.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 5 January 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

DFA SchmeeEffAy, tell me something about the Boomtang Boys!

Hey Yancey, you've moved up in the world like your name was greenhouse gas, eh? How are you?

The Thinking Man's Paris Hilton (DarrenK), Monday, 5 January 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

h cracks me up.

search: six finger satellite law of ruins, produced by james murphy

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 5 January 2004 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
From the DFA website: "DFA Records will be releasing two brand new vinyl 12" singles on Tuesday September 28, 2004, from the groups J.O.Y. and Pixeltan." The J.O.Y. track is that really Slits-y "Sunplus" thing that everyone downloaded a few months back. Pixeltan are Hisham from Black Dice's new thing, apparently, so I'm looking forward to that.

A look at the discography page also turns up:
LCD Soundsystem "Movement" 7", with the album now scheduled for 2005
The Juan Maclean "I Robot / Less Than Human" 10"
DFA Compilation #2, 3xCD (!)

Shady Loch Lenin (haitch), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"The J.O.Y. track is that really Slits-y "Sunplus" thing that everyone downloaded a few months back."

I thought this was part of the press release and enjoyed the weary candour.

LCD Soundsystem are now taking the piss.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i downloaded 'movement' a lil while ago, didn't know if it was new or not. nonetheless, it's not very good i don't think.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 8 August 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

with the album now scheduled for 2005

It'd better be fucking January 2005.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Pixeltan's ep on Troubleman was pretty frenzied and fun—quite different from Black Dice. It'll be interesting to hear 'em DFA-ized.

If "Movement" is the next LCD single, where the heck did "Kick Out the Chairs" come from?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Both the new 12"s are quite good, if not as thrilling as some of their other singles. I like the DFA remix of "Sunplus" a lot more than the a-side version.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hisham was in Pixeltan a few years ago but left and they eventually became Plate Tectonics, I think. Maybe he's gone back?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure about this, but i don't think the pixeltan tracks are brand new.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe this means Adam will go back to rockin in OSS.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose "kick out the chairs" is a collaboration and therefore not really the new LCD single.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 8 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the pixeltan 12-inch is really, really great

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 8 August 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded at least one LCD album track, so yes, they are fucking about. I really love the Junior Senior remix however. Very anthemic in its way.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Sunday, 8 August 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

kick out the chairs is Munk feat. james and nancy.
it's ok, not amazing, the remix on the flip is a gorgeous new wave thing. i dont know who it's by, sounds like a thin white duke thing maybe.

anyone got links to download any of the above?

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Monday, 9 August 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Massively agree re: DFA remix of Junior Senior. I find their music to be kinda wanky, actually, but the remix is totally ass-shaking.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 30 August 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ref. upthread to (I thought) DFA being in the studio w/them, oh exciting

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oh.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Them were in the studio with the DFA earlier this year... I guess Andrew's (like I am) wondering whether it's materialised yet (release date?).

(x-post)

willem (willem), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

sal from Liquid Liquid is DJing the next Pop Your Funk party at APT, perhaps we can ask him then...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
The new 3CD comp is terrific, got it today. The Black Leotard Front track that opens the set is 15 minutes of fun, No surprises sonically but so so so HOTT! The new DFA produced version of Liquid Liquid's "Bellhead" will make you weep tears of joy. Its made me look forward to the Juan Maclean lonplayer very much too - his track "give me every little thing" is the highlight of the 3rd (mixed) CD - i thought he would never better "By the time i get to Venus" but he has with this.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this out in stores?

Clusterfuck at the Baja Fresh Salsa Bar (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazon says it's released today. Looks like I have to go to Amoeba.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
Nine Inch Nails remix coming up, hopefully sounding more interesting than that Blues Explosion remix from last month...

JoB (JoB), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you've got it wrong - that BX remix is the jam!

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that JSBX remix was fucking beautiful.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

http://pitchforkmedia.com/features/weekly/05-05-09-jukebox-james-murphy.shtml

James Murphy picks his favourite tunes for Pitchfork, including M.I.A., Daft Punk, Lethal B and fucking Jet(?).

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think he picked them - I thought it was more of an Invisible Jukebox type of thing, where the interviewer picks the songs to play, and the interviewee is supposed to comment on them.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think we've done a Jukebox Jury/Invisible Jukebox style feature at Pitchfork, so I'll explain what's going on here: I recently stopped by James' apartment and played him some records (they're the bold headers, obviously) and then recorded what he said about them.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's weird that pfork is now cannibalizing other excellent publications for ideas. and they're generally the most recognizable features from those pubs. fair play, i guess.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a great idea, though. i wish more pubs would do jukebox juries. they're always really entertaining to read, even when i know little about the artists. matos has done (and commissioned) some really good ones for seattle weekly.
