birdman mumia (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

wut people are hating on mariah carey?

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

nb i am not going to defend the mariah album cover

i dunno, it's obviously not a masterpiece of design or w/e, but it conveys a really strong likeability that's kind of what the whole album's about. it's a big notch under 'how to be a lady' and 'love vs money' but it's consistently listenable the whole way through, and i like "ribbon" more than anything on the other two albums. i can totally get someone not being blown away by it, but it takes a special kind of heartless bastard to actively dislike this stuff.

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:27 (sixteen years ago)

Meanderthals album is pretty good!! Just discovered after seeing it place above. I had no idea The Idjut Boys were involved in this.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

xp: It's not actively dislikabe, just a big wash of nothingness.

GRIZZLY! GRRR! GRRR! So Indie Entertaaaaiiiinmeeent! (The Reverend), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

idc about her album cover but the whole "Confessions of a..." thing is super tired at this point

musically, Friday, 12 February 2010 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i wouldnt have voted for it but at 3am trying to finish some work stuff its great.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

^ Meanderthals not Mariah

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

that kinda seems like an appropriate context for either one, tbh

is the baroness cover by BWS?

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:19 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know what bws is but the baroness cover is by the singer of baroness

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:20 (sixteen years ago)

It kind of reminds me of AOS, actually, but I don't know who BWS is, so maybe it's even more like BWS.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

that dude does a mean barry windsor smith imitation
http://www.linesandcolors.com/images/2006-01/bws_450.jpg

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:22 (sixteen years ago)

No, its by John Baizley, the band's lead singer. He did the last one and some other great covers for like Pig Destroyer and Skeletonwitch.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 12 February 2010 05:22 (sixteen years ago)

xp huh yeah there is some definite influencin' going on there

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:23 (sixteen years ago)

BWS is best known for his early work on conan; eventually did a bunch of batty independent work, mostly does illustration now.
he's a definite touchstone for these metal guys, though obviously BWS is riffing on art nouveau

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

but i doubt the baroness guy is a massive mucha fan and the conan shit is VERY METAL

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

xp yeah definitely--looks like good stuff at least from what i'm seeing on his site

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:26 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, it's obviously not a masterpiece of design or w/e, but it conveys a really strong likeability large pair of breast implants that's kind of what the whole album's about.

Fixed this (sorry, it's true).

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 06:39 (sixteen years ago)

3:16 (jjjusten), Friday, 12 February 2010 06:46 (sixteen years ago)

because sorry dudes but i have never heard of 80% of this so far

3:16 (jjjusten), Friday, 12 February 2010 06:46 (sixteen years ago)

That El Perro Del Mar CD is by far her worst. Her other ones had fully realized songs on it. Still like it. Just sayin'

Emily's Cheese, Friday, 12 February 2010 06:59 (sixteen years ago)

i totally disagree. i've listened to it far more than anything else she's done except for maybe "god knows (you've got to give to get)"

psychgawsple, Friday, 12 February 2010 07:47 (sixteen years ago)

It may have been me who put Broadcast & The Focus Group at #1. It's not the best album of last year, but it is quite beguiling and I thought it deserved a boost. (And The-Dream shouldn't need my help to do very well in this poll.)

Can't remember if I voted for 'Ay Ay Ay' in the end but that's the only other LP in the list so far that I own.

Her other ones had fully realized songs on it

they did? pretty much the same 'write a couple of lines and then just repeat them over and over' thing on all 3 albums no? the advantage of Love Is Not Pop is Rasmus Hägg bringing the Balearic lushness.

30 -- Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care (115 points, 10 votes, #1 vote/s) (dnp in p4k, 199 in p&j)

musically, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

wow did not know ppl really rated this

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

yeah seemed like everyone was pretty lukewarm from what i remember from that thread

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

I know it's got its fair share of begone dull album h8ers but I think it's really good; is a real slow burn compared to the first 2 tho

chris nibbs (cozen), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

didn't really at all on first listen but in the run-up to submitting ballots i listened again and it's pretty aces.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

curious who voted it no.1

chris nibbs (cozen), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't get round to hearing it cos of aforementioned lukewarm response.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know Cozen, I thought the first two were kinda slow burners themselves. What really made it work for you?? Which tracks specifically tied it all together?

Fetchboy, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's the thing, it seemed to me like a more reserved less immediate junior boys album which is kind of intense

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

is a real slow burn compared to the first 2 tho

See, I thought the second album was a slow burn (and a damn good one)... didn't really have the patience for *another* of those.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

I've got the patience for another if I'm a little sure it'll pay off. There was clearly some overlying theme holding the 2nd all together and I appreciated the songs more and more as the whole story started to emerge. I don't really detect anything similar on this one.

Fetchboy, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Well stated.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

Wrong album cover, btw:

Just couldn't get into that album.

29 -- Röyksopp - Junior (116 points, 9 votes, #1 vote/s) (30 in p4k, 301 in p&j)

musically, Friday, 12 February 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

ok this is a weird list

chris nibbs (cozen), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

Really got into that one recently though.

DavidM, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

Their best album imo.

DavidM, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

that junior boys album is real good chill house i think, i was surprised that ppl were so meh on it

birdman mumia (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

I keep coming on to these results threads so late in the game that I feel like an asshole for not being there earlier than then jumpin' in all willy nilly.

Really enjoying The Grandfather Paradox, more stuff that I've never heard of before that's awesome plz

^^potentially not true at all, sry^^ (Z S), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

xpost Think its because their previous was the same, but with better tunes.

sofatruck, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Two in a row I voted for! Begone Dull Care is great, am curious who voted it #1.

Enoki Doki (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

Royksopp and Junior Boys are the first two to appear from my list.

Begone Dull Care is their weakest album in my opinion but only because the first two are just perfect. I think Work being the second track made the album a but hard to get into at first. When people talk about the album being less instant, I think that must be the song they think of. Songs like Hazel and Bits & Pieces are up there with their best and as poppy as In The Morning.

It's the exact opposite for me with Royksopp, I like the first two albums just fine but Junior was in a different league. It's such a warm album and probably my favorite production on an album this year. I'm surprised it didn't sell a lot better, when I first heard The Girl & The Robot I thought it would give Robyn her second number one.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 12 February 2010 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

it looks like the last two didn't actually get a #1 vote but '#1 vote/s' is just included in details from hereon, or am i misreading?
